A Questionnaire For Incoming High School Ell Students To Better Assist Them In Entering The American Educational System, Narine Balayan
A Questionnaire For Incoming High School Ell Students To Better Assist Them In Entering The American Educational System, Narine Balayan
All Graduate Projects
This project is designed to help teachers get a better understanding of the incoming ELL students' backgrounds to better assist these students in the education process and make the transition from their native educational system to the American educational system smoother. Teachers must be aware of ELL students' family situations, lives outside the school, diverse background knowledge and how these things affect reading and writing comprehension, and be able to choose the most appropriate assessment and instruction.
Kinematic Behavior Of Southern Alaska Constrained By Westward Decreasing Postglacial Slip Rates On The Denali Fault, Alaska, A.-S. Mériaux, K. Sieh, R. C. Finkel, Charles M. Rubin, M. H. Taylor, A. J. Meltzner, F. J. Ryerson

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
Long‐term slip rates for the Denali Fault in southern Alaska are derived using 10Be cosmogenic radionuclide (CRN) dating of offset glacial moraines at two sites. Correction of 10Be CRN model ages for the effect of snow shielding uses historical, regional snow cover data scaled to the site altitudes. To integrate the time variation of snow cover, we included the relative changes in effective wetness over the last 11 ka, derived from lake‐level records and δ 18O variations from Alaskan lakes. The moraine CRN model ages are normally distributed around an average of 12.1 ± 1.0 ka (n …

A Computational Study Of Tsunami Runup As A Function Of Coastline Morphology, Kevin Ewell
A Computational Study Of Tsunami Runup As A Function Of Coastline Morphology, Kevin Ewell
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Tsunamis are surface waves with wavelengths on the order of tens to hundreds of kilometers. Modeling the propagation of a tsunami as it approaches shore requires detailed knowledge of bathymmetry in order to correctly capture the evolution of the wave as it slows down. Most published studies of terminal tsunami behavior (such as wave height and runup) are done for specific sites, often comparing model "postdictions" to recorded events. The goal of the present study is to understand in a general way how coastline indentations (such as bays and inlets) affect tsunami runup and wave height. The COMCOT tsunami propagation …
Animals In The Classroom: Implications And Implementation, Christen Lynn Robinson
Animals In The Classroom: Implications And Implementation, Christen Lynn Robinson
All Graduate Projects
The role of animals in the classroom through Animal Assisted Therapy is examined. The benefits and risks are outlined and discussed. Specific measures to decrease related risks are given. A look at Animal Assisted Therapy from the perspective of the animal itself is also explored. Does the practice exploit animals? The research suggests that it depends upon the type of animal used. A Power Point presentation explaining the benefits of Animal Assisted Therapy is provided. The target audience for the presentation is educators interested in implementing an Animal Assisted Therapy program within the school setting. The presentation clearly outlines the …
Normal Schools Of The Pacific Northwest: The Lifelong Impact Of Extracurricular Club Activities On Women Students At Teacher-Training Institutions, 1890-1917, Karen J. Blair
History Faculty Scholarship
Historical scholarship on the normal schools in the late 19th and early 20th centuries has emphasized the curricular goals of these state-funded institutions. Yet the afterschool clubs at these institutions also held great importance in the lives of budding educators, both immediately and in the course of their careers. An examination of the two major types of groups that students were involved in—literary societies and service associations, both of which Washington State's three normal schools expected and sometimes required their enrollees to join—reveals several predictable and unpredictable immediate and long-term results.

Direction Of The Play: Alicia In Wonder Tierra, Carla Francesca Stanley
Master of Theater Production Graduate Projects
This project entailed the selection, background research and documentation, design, casting, direction and post-production analysis of Shafter High School's production of Alicia in Wonder Tierra by Silvia Gonzalez S. Documentation includes research analysis of the play and an evaluation of the play as a production vehicle for Shafter High School. The analysis includes a discussion of the use of a non-traditional play to attract an audience in a largely Hispanic community.

Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)
This year represents the thirteenth year of annual multidisciplinary conferences dedicated to student scholarship at Central Washington University. In 1996, CWU sponsored the first Undergraduate Research Symposium, a showcase of faculty-mentored undergraduate student research. This event was an innovative forum for developing student scholarship that gained attention far beyond CWU. Since 1996, the undergraduate symposium expanded to include other student scholarly activity, and the broader scope was reflected in a new name in 1998, the Symposium on Undergraduate Research and Creative Expression, commonly referred to as SOURCE.

Automated Vector-To-Raster Image Registration, Boris Kovalerchuk, Peter Doucette, Gamal Seedahmed, Robert Brigantic, Michael Kovalerchuk, Brian Graff
Computer Science Faculty Scholarship
The variability of panchromatic and multispectral images, vector data (maps) and DEM models is growing. Accordingly, the requests and challenges are growing to correlate, match, co-register, and fuse them. Data to be integrated may have inaccurate and contradictory geo-references or not have them at all. Alignment of vector (feature) and raster (image) geospatial data is a difficult and time-consuming process when transformational relationships between the two are nonlinear. The robust solutions and commercial software products that address current challenges do not yet exist. In the proposed approach for Vector-to-Raster Registration (VRR) the candidate features are auto-extracted from imagery, vectorized, and …

Educational Games Increase Learning Effectiveness: A Case Study, Shonda R. Hoyt
Educational Games Increase Learning Effectiveness: A Case Study, Shonda R. Hoyt
All Graduate Projects
Educators of all age groups-whether they be elementary, secondary, or postsecondary- have long recognized and known that there is a strong connection between student engagement in the learning process and student success. Given the environment in which we teach in today, with its growing diversity, larger class sizes, increased focus on high-stakes testing, and ever- expanding poverty levels, it is essential that teachers incorporate new teaching techniques into their classrooms as a tool for better engaging students in their own learning. To that end, this paper reviews the purported benefits of educational games in the classroom setting as a tool …

Land Use Influences The Spatiotemporal Controls On Nitrification And Denitrification In Headwater Streams, Clay P. Arango, J. L. Tank
Land Use Influences The Spatiotemporal Controls On Nitrification And Denitrification In Headwater Streams, Clay P. Arango, J. L. Tank
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
N and C cycles in headwater streams are coupled, and land use can modify these cycles by increasing N availability and removing riparian vegetation. To increase our understanding of how land use modifies the controls on N cycling, we quantified rates of 2 microbial N transformations in a total of 18 agricultural and urban streams (with and without riparian buffers) for 3 y to examine how riparian vegetation and land use influence sediment nitrification and denitrification. Nitrification rates were highest in agricultural streams in late spring. Nitrification was not related to streamwater NH4+ concentrations but was positively related …
