Community Attitudes Toward Early-Release Offenders Under Ab 109, Mari Lily Herrera, Matthew Erik Mcgiffen

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine community attitudes towards ex-offenders released in San Bernardino under AB 109 on subjects that would likely impact the ex-offender reintegration process. Past research has shown that a community’s willingness to employ and offer social support to ex-offenders has a substantial impact on their probability of re-offense. This study focused on individuals whose roles in the community give them greater influence over ex-offenders. A total of 11 community members participated in this qualitative study. Of the 11 respondents, 4 were employers, 4 were social service workers, and 3 were community center workers. Respondents …

Social Work Students' Perceptions Of Sex Offenders, Mayra Bernal, Henry Christopher Meza Jun 2015

Social Work Students' Perceptions Of Sex Offenders, Mayra Bernal, Henry Christopher Meza

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Social workers who choose to work in the field of child welfare will almost unavoidably be exposed to sexual trauma. This requires that social workers are prepared to understand and work with those who have been sexually abused, as well as the perpetrators of sex crimes. The purpose of this study was to explore social work students’ perceptions of sex offenders since it is anticipated that they will work with the sex offender population at some point in their careers. Exploring this topic could help future social workers gain valuable knowledge related to recognizing barriers that may exist when working …

An Innovative Clustering Approach To Market Segmentation For Improved Price Prediction, Donghui Shi, Jian Guan, Jozef Zurada, Alan S. Levitan Jan 2015

An Innovative Clustering Approach To Market Segmentation For Improved Price Prediction, Donghui Shi, Jian Guan, Jozef Zurada, Alan S. Levitan

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

A main obstacle to accurate prediction is often the heterogeneous nature of data. Existing studies have pointed to data clustering as a potential solution to reduce heterogeneity, and therefore increase prediction accuracy. This paper describes an innovative clustering approach based on a novel adaptation of the Fuzzy C-Means algorithm and its application to market segmentation in real estate. Over 15,000 actual home sales transactions were used to evaluate our approach. The test results demonstrate that the accuracy in price prediction shows notable improvement for some clustered market segments. In comparison with existing methods our approach is simple to implement. It …

Refraction Microtremor Analysis Of Areas Surrounding California State University San Bernardino, Malcolm D. Thomas Dec 2014

Refraction Microtremor Analysis Of Areas Surrounding California State University San Bernardino, Malcolm D. Thomas

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The San Andreas Fault stretches for over 800 miles through California. Along the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains, areas in close proximity to the San Andreas Fault Zone may be subject to site amplification of ground motion caused by seismic activity via wave propagation through the subsurface. These seismic hazards are being addressed via the Alquist-Priolo Earthquake Faulting Zone Act and the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP). Shear wave velocity of the subsurface has served as a proxy for ground motion amplification and is therefore a useful parameter to help analyze and reduce seismic hazards. Low shear wave …

Mcneil, Ft. Washington: Fda Case Study, Warren Adis Jun 2014

Mcneil, Ft. Washington: Fda Case Study, Warren Adis

Communications of the IIMA

This research analyzes the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) quality systems methodology through a detailed 12-year case study of McNeil Consumer Healthcare and its Ft. Washington, Pennsylvania manufacturing facility. This in-depth review, from 2000 to 2011, includes plant inspections reports, out-of-compliance findings, warning letters and a plant closure injunction. It then contrasts the specific findings of the McNeil case study with an analysis of overall FDA performance within the same sector of Finished Bio-Pharmaceuticals (BP). In addition, this case study pays particular attention to the role played by the FDA’s risk methodology in enhancing the overall inspection process and increasing …

The Ethics Of Bi With Private And Public Entities, Brian Demilia, Michael Peded, Kenneth Jorgensen, Ramesh Subramanian Jun 2014

The Ethics Of Bi With Private And Public Entities, Brian Demilia, Michael Peded, Kenneth Jorgensen, Ramesh Subramanian

Communications of the IIMA

The Internet plays a vital role in data collection, information creation, and business intelligence (BI). The nature of information collected on the Internet, and the degree to which such information is collected, both have ethical ramifications. What data can be collected is very different from what data should be collected. Disregarding the latter question can be more profitable, but doing so can often involve unethical practices and more importantly, compromise the privacy of individuals. It has become widely known that private enterprises collect all manner of (BI) data about individuals, causing ethical concerns. The ethics of privacy do not affect …

Explaining Attitudes Toward And Experiences With Social Media Among Public Information Officers Through Adaptive Structuration Theory, Astrid Shiel, Michelle T. Violanti, Kevin Slusarski Jun 2014

Explaining Attitudes Toward And Experiences With Social Media Among Public Information Officers Through Adaptive Structuration Theory, Astrid Shiel, Michelle T. Violanti, Kevin Slusarski

Communications of the IIMA

This study set out to explore similarities and differences between firefighting organizations using and not using social media for crisis/emergency situations. Using Adaptive Structuration Theory (AST), our exploratory survey results from 129 first responders suggest social media innovations are outpacing PIOs’ abilities to effectively adopt and utilize social media strategies. Of those who do not use social media, they have considered using it for information-dissemination purposes only; the main differences between those who do and don’t use social media is their perception of the obstacles to implementing it (training, time, resources) and whether they use it in their personal lives.

The Fbi Virtual Case File: A Case Study , Jack T. Marchewka Jun 2014

The Fbi Virtual Case File: A Case Study , Jack T. Marchewka

Communications of the IIMA

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) began developing a case management software system called the Virtual Case File in 2000, but eventually abandoned the project in April 2005. The cost of this project was estimated to be over $170 million, and this waste of tax payer money drew sharp criticism. The impetus for the project was due to the FBI’s aging technology infrastructure that included 386-based personal computers and a 12-year-old network system. In 2000, Congress allocated almost $340 million for the proposed FBI Information Technology Upgrade Project (FITUP) that was soon divided into three parts and renamed Trilogy. This …

Realizing The Future State Of K-12 Public Education: Data Exchange And Functional Integration With Local Government, Patrick J. Simon, J. Mark Heumann Jun 2014

Realizing The Future State Of K-12 Public Education: Data Exchange And Functional Integration With Local Government, Patrick J. Simon, J. Mark Heumann

Communications of the IIMA

It is no news that K-12 school districts can more effectively provide instruction and support services by leveraging current and emerging information technologies. Nor is it news that when districts fail to adopt up-to-date IT-based systems, endemic underfunding gets the blame. In fact, however, districts can leverage existing funding sources and ROI from early projects to support later projects and sustain services over the long term. What is required is a thorough understanding of functions and dependencies in the local school, school district, and community; structured planning and functional alignment in the district and its IT organization; and ongoing commitment …
