Colb And Dorf On Abortion And Animal Rights, Mylan Engel Jr. Mar 2017

Colb And Dorf On Abortion And Animal Rights, Mylan Engel Jr.

Between the Species

In their recent book, Sherry Colb and Michael Dorf defend the following ethical theses: (1) sentience is sufficient for possessing the right not to be harmed and the right not to be killed; (2) killing sentient animals for food is almost always seriously wrong; (3) aborting pre-sentient fetuses raises no moral concerns at all; and (4) aborting sentient fetuses is wrong absent a reason weighty enough to justify killing the fetus. They also discuss strategies and tactics for activists: They oppose the use of graphic images by activists on tactical grounds, and they categorically oppose the use of violence by …

Biological Sciences

Purpose

In this study, we investigated the effect of biochar (BC) and fungal bacterial co-inoculation (FB) on soil enzymatic activity and immobilization of heavy metals in serpentine soil in Sri Lanka.

Materials and methods

A pot experiment was conducted with tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) at 1, 2.5, and 5 % (w/w) BC ratios. Polyphenol oxidase, catalase and dehydrogenase activities were determined by idometric, potassium permanganate oxidisable, and spectrophotometric methods, respectively. Heavy metal concentrations were assessed by 0.01 M CaCl2 and sequential extraction methods.

Results and discussion

An increase in BC application reduced polyphenol oxidase, …

Buchanan Hollow Nut Company Rebranding And Research, Lindsay Robson

Agricultural Education and Communication

A marketing plan was designed for Buchanan Hollow Nut Company (BHNC) in the summer of 2016 to redesign the company brand. Additionally, the author conducted research to determine if the implementation of bar codes and scanning would improve internal efficiency.

Utilizing the company’s owner, and famous artist, Sharleen Robson, the author created a tasteful watercolor design to update the logo for BHNC. Furthermore, by contacting the current packaging company, Legend Packaging Group, the author received estimated costs for adding a bar code to each product. These barcodes were then printed and added to the processing boxes in the storage facility …

The Civil Rights Movement At Cal Poly Compared To Other Universities Across The Nation, Brett Barcellos Mar 2017

The Civil Rights Movement At Cal Poly Compared To Other Universities Across The Nation, Brett Barcellos

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

At Cal Poly, demonstrations for the civil rights movement were not very common but when they were, they made headlines. The war in Vietnam far overshadowed the civil rights movement at Cal Poly due simply to its demographics at the time. The population at Cal Poly, as well as the surrounding areas, was lacking diversity, making the civil rights movement less of a priority for many. Perhaps if the civil rights movement was taken more seriously during its time of relevance, more African Americans would have became inclined to attend Cal Poly and get involved in what was happening. However, …

Cal Poly Activism: The Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant, Alex Butruce Mar 2017

Cal Poly Activism: The Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant, Alex Butruce

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

The use of nuclear power is a complicated issue which brings forth concerns for the environment and local populations. The Diablo Canyon Power Plant, which began construction in 1968, was part of this clash between ideas of progress and safety. Environmental concerns arose as locals who cared about the beautiful coastline and archeological area, dating back thousands of years, where the plant was being built wanted to see the site left alone.4 Nuclear power at this time was also a relatively new source of energy which the public had little understanding of, bringing a high concern for safety among locals. …

Blaming The Victims: The Telegram-Tribune And Mustang News’S Coverage Of The Disappearance Of Kristin Smart And The Murders Of Rachel Newhouse And Aundria Crawford, Jacquelyn Morris

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

The cases of Rachel Newhouse, Aundria Crawford, and Kristen Smart are vital in evaluating how the San Luis Obispo media—specifically, the San Luis Obispo County Telegram-Tribune and Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo school newspaper, Mustang News—have treated cases of violence against women in the past. On a larger scale, looking at the cases of these three women will reveal how missing female college students were treated by the media in the 1990s and if this treatment has changed in recent years. In the cases of Kristin Smart and Aundria Crawford, the Telegram-Tribune followed the predominant trend of media outlets by …

A President’S Influence On Student Activism, Katelyn Frum Mar 2017

A President’S Influence On Student Activism, Katelyn Frum

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

Following President Nixon’s announcement of the US military’s incursion into Cambodia, an eruption of innumerable student protests occurred all throughout colleges and universities across the United States in May 1970. The measure of violence displayed at these demonstrations, however, undoubtedly varied due to disparate surroundings and events specific to the atmosphere of these colleges. Evaluating the many contrasting occurrences that took place at different universities validates how the combined extensive preparation of the university’s president and administration have a beneficial effect on the level of violence shown at a protest on a college campus. With much preparation and steps taken …

How Cal Poly Athletics Maintained Success On The Chopping Block, Jenna Noce

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

In April of 1990, Cal Poly’s President Warren J. Baker and a handful of administrators decided that due to the athletics program’s $95,000 deficit during the 1988-89 fiscal year, a task force would be put together to help determine the future of sports at Cal Poly by a November 1990 deadline. President Baker would ultimately make the final decision when it came to the future of athletics, but he wanted input from members of the Cal Poly community. The task force was comprised of Mustang Booster members, executive directors of organizations such as the Cal Poly Foundation and university relations, …

A Long, Slow March Toward Accessibility: Cal Poly’S Effort To Eliminate Barriers For Physically Disabled Students, Tyler Lopez Mar 2017

A Long, Slow March Toward Accessibility: Cal Poly’S Effort To Eliminate Barriers For Physically Disabled Students, Tyler Lopez

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

This paper examines Cal Poly’s response to the 1973 Rehabilitation Act in the decade that followed. Cal Poly’s response, while passionate, was still mediocre as compared with other campuses within the California State University system. Cal Poly’s efforts to create an accessible campus fall comfortably into the timeline implied by federal legislation and national trends, although the fact that 11 other California State Universities established organizations to provide services for disabled students shows that Cal Poly was far from a leader among its peers. This is not to say that Cal Poly’s response to the issue to disabled students was …
