Modular House Project Narrative, Kevin Chiang, Spencer Dilley, Sarah Dothwaite, Trevor Daniel Houghton, Ryan Lefebvre, Michele Leung, Cameron Lober, Chris Martinez, Katie Mayer

Architectural Engineering

The Modular House, located in Poly Canyon, has seen extensive damage since the last caretaker left nearly ten years ago. To prevent further damage and improve the safety and appeal of the structure, we are proposing a renovation of the existing building that removes the existing cladding and partitions. By the end of Spring Quarter 2017, the Modular House will have a guardrail system replacing the wood paneling on the walls and a new steel composite deck to replace the current flooring system. The structural steel framing system will remain as is.

Optimizing Control Of Shell Eco-Marathon Prototype Vehicle To Minimize Fuel Consumption, Chad Louis Bickel

Master's Theses

Every year the automotive industry strives to increase fuel efficiency in vehicles. When most vehicles are designed, fuel efficiency cannot always come first. The Shell Eco-marathon changes that by challenging students everywhere to develop the most fuel-efficient vehicle possible. There are many different factors that affect fuel efficiency, and different teams focus on different vehicle parameters. Currently, there is no straightforward design tool that can be used to help in Shell Eco-marathon vehicle design. For this reason, it is difficult to optimize every vehicle parameter for maximum fuel efficiency.

In this study, a simulation is developed by using basic vehicle …

Developing A Greenometer For Green Manufacturing Assessment, Ahmed H. Salem, Ahmed M. Deif

Industrial Technology and Packaging

In this paper a toolbox (Greenometer) to assess the greenness level of manufacturing companies is proposed. The assessment approach is based on capturing the relative greenness position of any company among other industries from different sectors as well as within the same sector. The assessment was based on selected greenness attributes and their composing indicators at each of the two levels of the developed Greenometer. Geometric Mean Method (GMM) was adopted to be the generic assessment technique for cross industries greenness evaluation, while Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was employed to assess the greenness level of intra-industries layer. Three different industrial …

Measurement And Analysis Of Transport Vibration For Ltl Freight Utilizing Stowage Optimization Equipment, Jay Singh, Koushik Saha, David Leinberger, John Antle

Industrial Technology and Packaging

The random vibration spectra typically used in lab based simulations towards developing and validating optimized packages for distribution have been developed through past research that have studied global transport vibration environments. Approximately 67% of all the freight tonnage moved in the U.S. utilizes heavy duty Class 8 trucks. While the floor (suspension) based vibration simulation profiles for these types of trucks are available towards lab based simulation, there have been no studies investigating the impact of shelving and stacking systems typically used for optimization of freight stowage in truck trailers by many freight companies. It is important to quantify how …

Stream Terrace Genesis Along Bunte Creek In The Elkhorn Plain, Ca, Madi Allgaier, Shelley Anderson, Duncan Lord

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

There are several factors influencing terrace genesis and terrace types in Bunte Creek. Strath terraces exist at upper Bunte Creek, whereas thick fill terraces exist at lower Bunte Creek. Analysis of these terraces leads to insight on what specific factors lead to their formation. Terraces were mapped along the extent of Bunte Creek. Sediment data and terrace-height data were collected for in order to make a complete analysis of the terraces. Tectonic uplift led to incision and strath terrace genesis at upper Bunte Creek. Climatic forcing and base-level rise caused alluvial aggradation behind a shutter ridge that intersects lower Bunte …

“Sign Or Get Out”: Academic Freedom At The University Of California And Cal Poly In The Mccarthy Era, Cameron J. Coyne

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

The administering of loyalty oaths in America attained a certain controversy in late 1949 and into 1950 when the state of California and the University of California Board of Regents implemented loyalty oaths that explicitly demanded that all employees declare that they were not a member of the Communist Party. A crisis ensued, as many academics, faculty, and state employees were given the choice between the constitutional right to free speech and job security. Many of these individuals chose integrity in the face of losing their job, their reputation, and their livelihood. This paper will examine the consequences of implementing …

Got Culture? The Lack Of Diversity On Cal Poly’S Campus And The Attempts To Raise Cultural Awareness, Alice Jang Mar 2017

Got Culture? The Lack Of Diversity On Cal Poly’S Campus And The Attempts To Raise Cultural Awareness, Alice Jang

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

In this paper, I will argue that the community of minorities at Cal Poly has been the driving factor in recruiting diverse students to the university. Despite lack of encouragement and assistance from the school, various ethnic student organizations have independently hosted events and programs to spread culture onto a predominantly white campus. After analyzing various cultural organizations and their activities on campus, Cal Poly’s cultural clubs have clearly made a bigger impact on the lives of minorities than the university administrators have. This paper will focus on Asian-American organizations because they make up the majority of the ethnic student …

Hanging By A Liberal Root: A Study Of Cal Poly General Education From 1975 To 2001, Kevin Hegyi

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

In this paper, I will observe how the liberal arts manifested themselves through Cal Poly’s general education program and subsequently how the program shifted from a haphazardly arranged course curriculum to something that involved not only structure, but also cohesive discipline. I will further observe how the general education program faced a dire situation in the 1970s and how it evolved into something much more structured and applicable by the turn of the century. This was accomplished by completely renovating the general education requirements to suit the idea of a broadened education that placed greater emphasis on the liberal arts. …

To gauge student response, I look at past student publications such as The Polygram and Mustang Daily, focussing on their reaction to athletics.

Digging Deeper: Uncovering The Aftermath Of Kristin Smart’S Disappearance, Kailyn Pope Mar 2017

Digging Deeper: Uncovering The Aftermath Of Kristin Smart’S Disappearance, Kailyn Pope

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

This paper will discuss two major components of past crimes at Cal Poly: the attentive student response to Kristin Smart’s 1996 disappearance in light of possible shortcomings of authorities, and how events such as these have shaped campus safety policies and regulations since the 1990s. Kristin Smart’s disappearance, as well as other criminal acts against students in the 1990s and beyond, brought the Cal Poly student community together in solidarity year after year with programs such as Take Back the Night. Even though the red handprints, indicators of areas in which someone had been sexually assaulted, have been removed from …

The Heroic Role Of Women At Cal Poly, Bryce Owens Mar 2017

The Heroic Role Of Women At Cal Poly, Bryce Owens

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

In its earliest years as a university, Cal Poly had significant participation from women as well as men, not only as far as enrollment is concerned but also in regard to extracurricular activities. Although the ratio of men to women was very high, women played a role at the school nonetheless. However, the tragedy that was the Great Depression forced many schools, including Poly, to cut much of their budgets. The most significant change manifested through the economic downturn was the banning of women from enrollment by Governor C.C. Young in 1930. Many years later, in 1956, women were once …

Welcome Back: The Return Of Women At Cal Poly, Charlie Williams Mar 2017

Welcome Back: The Return Of Women At Cal Poly, Charlie Williams

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

After a nearly 30-year absence from California Polytechnic State University, female students were readmitted to campus in the fall of 1956. Why did President McPhee only start to show interest in coeducation during the mid-1950s? Also, what was the process like to readmit women onto campus, both financially and logistically? Lastly, what was the perception of women by their male counterparts, faculty, and administration and how involved were they on campus? To help answer these questions and gain broader context for the time period, one can compare Cal Poly to other institutions across the United States. For example, in 1972, …

The Minds Of The Dissidents: Cal Poly Student Unrest During Robert E. Kennedy’S Presidency 1967-1979, Brigette Sadowski Mar 2017

The Minds Of The Dissidents: Cal Poly Student Unrest During Robert E. Kennedy’S Presidency 1967-1979, Brigette Sadowski

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

During Robert E. Kennedy’s presidency at Cal Poly from 1967 to 1979, Cal Poly experienced many protests on several different topics, but all ended peacefully, without incident. I argue this is largely because of the peaceful mindset of the student body, faculty, and administration to keep the peace, making Cal Poly a more conservative campus compared to other California Universities, such as the University of California, Berkeley and San Francisco State University. For students, such as those involved in SNAP, violence was not a means to an end and one of their key goals was to educate rather than yell …

An Educational Video: Cal Poly Dairy Calf Management Procedures, Katie Nicole Vierra, Anthony Joseph Ferdinandi Mar 2017

An Educational Video: Cal Poly Dairy Calf Management Procedures, Katie Nicole Vierra, Anthony Joseph Ferdinandi

Agricultural Education and Communication

In particular, dairy production in California is ranked one of the top five states in the United States that produces approximately 40 billion pounds of milk per year. California’s dairy industry is not only the largest milk producer in the nation, but it is also the most financially prominent in the agricultural industry. This industry lead is merely because of its careful management practices. The way calves are raised depend on the resources used, the natural environment present, and the operation of the dairy farm. Essentially, there are numerous ways to care for a cow and calf. However, the aim …

Liquid Force Kite Control System Design, Brendan Kerr, Brodie Sutherland, Alden Simmer Mar 2017

Liquid Force Kite Control System Design, Brendan Kerr, Brodie Sutherland, Alden Simmer

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Kiteboarding is an ocean sport wherein the participant, also known as a kiter, uses a large inflatable bow shaped kite to plane across the ocean on a surfboard or wakeboard. The rider is connected to his or her kite via a control bar system. This control system allows the kiter to steer the kite and add or remove power from the kite, in order to change direction and increase or decrease speed. This senior project focused on creating a new control bar system to replace a control bar system manufactured by a kiteboarding company, Liquid Force. The current Liquid Force …
