Motivating And Investing In The Freshmen: Paving The Way For The Future, Allen Estes, John Lawson
Motivating And Investing In The Freshmen: Paving The Way For The Future, Allen Estes, John Lawson
Architectural Engineering
This paper describes an introductory freshman experience course, “Introduction to Building Systems” that was seven years in the making and meets several critical goals for this engineering department. As one of their very first courses, this two-unit course is taken in the Fall quarter by every incoming freshman, which translates into an annual enrollment of 50 to 120 students, depending on the year. Meeting twice a week, the first meeting is in a large lecture format where all of the students are together and are introduced to the topic for the week which includes structural systems, timber, concrete, steel, earth/foundations, …

Teaching Systems And Robotics In A Four-Week Summer Short Course, Andrew Danowitz, Bridget Benson, Jeremy Edmonds
Computer Science and Software Engineering
This paper describes a four-week summer short-course designed to introduce students with limited hands-on technical experience to the low-level details of embedded systems and robotics. Students start the course using a Raspberry Pi 3 to learn the basics of Linux and programming, and end the course by competing in a capture-the-flag type competition with the web-configurable GPS-guided autonomous robots they designed and tested in the course. Throughout the course, students are introduced to programming languages including Python and PHP, advanced programming concepts such as using sockets for inter-process communication, data interchange formats such as JSON, basic API development, system concepts …
Developing A Robust Teaching Portfolio As A Doctoral Student In A Research-Intensive Engineering Program, Anahid A. Behrouzi
Developing A Robust Teaching Portfolio As A Doctoral Student In A Research-Intensive Engineering Program, Anahid A. Behrouzi
Architectural Engineering
Successful faculty applications to teaching/undergraduate institutions can be difficult for doctoral students transitioning directly from a research-intensive engineering program. Oftentimes, these prospective faculty members have limited opportunities to engage in engineering education research, to serve as a primary instructor for a lecture course, or to receive adequate mentoring to prepare them for the environment of a teaching/undergraduate institution.
This paper will highlight the lessons learned by a new faculty member at a top-ranked undergraduate institution (and recent doctoral candidate at a R1 research institution) about how students can build a comprehensive teaching portfolio outside of the traditional coursework and research …

"Subjects-Of-A-Life," Entelechy, And Intrinsic Teleology, Josephine Donovan
Between the Species
Abstract
This article explores the question of what is a “subject-of-a-life,” Tom Regan’s celebrated term for a living entity to whom, he argued, we humans owe ethical duty. I return to ancient concepts of entelechy and teleological organization, arguing that, stripped of theological implications, they provide a usable basis for modern theorizing about organism and an ethical foundation for condemning such practices as transgenic engineering. Every creature, it is argued, has its own inherited formal identity, which it strives to sustain. This reality is ethically pertinent knowledge which humans are obliged to respect and honor.
Emg-Driven Inverse Dynamic Analysis Of Knee Contact Forces During Gait And Cycling Using Opensim, Megan V. Pottinger, Katherine Mavrommati, Scott Hazelwood, Stephen M. Klisch
Emg-Driven Inverse Dynamic Analysis Of Knee Contact Forces During Gait And Cycling Using Opensim, Megan V. Pottinger, Katherine Mavrommati, Scott Hazelwood, Stephen M. Klisch
Biomedical Engineering
Joint contact forces determine the loading experienced by cartilage tissue and, thus, may be used to predict risk of cartilage tissue damage and osteoarthritis (OA). Participating in low impact and/or non-weight bearing activities such as cycling may help reduce knee OA risk by limiting forces exerted during exercise [1]. Cycling is a common recommendation for rehabilitative or fitness sustainment exercise for select patients [1]. Although knee joint contact forces have been directly measured in gait and cycling using instrumented knee implants [2,3] and calculated in gait using EMG-driven analysis [4]; they have not been calculated in cycling using EMG-driven analysis. …
Principal Component Analysis Of Gait And Cycling Experiments: Crosstalk Error Reduction And Corrected Knee Axes, Jordan Skaro, Harsh Goel, Scott Hazelwood, Stephen M. Klisch
Principal Component Analysis Of Gait And Cycling Experiments: Crosstalk Error Reduction And Corrected Knee Axes, Jordan Skaro, Harsh Goel, Scott Hazelwood, Stephen M. Klisch
Biomedical Engineering
Crosstalk is a leading source of error in motion analysis [1-2]. Due to incorrect flexion axis direction that develops from marker placement error, crosstalk results in a strong, anatomically incorrect correlation between flexion-extension (FE) and adduction-abduction (AA) motions [1-2]. Thus, crosstalk limits the ability of biomechanical models to reflect the “true” motion of the knee. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) has been proposed as a post-hoc correction for crosstalk in prior gait studies [1-2]; however, previous studies have not proposed a method to determine PCA corrected knee axes. Further, it is not clear how PCA should be implemented in motion analysis …
Elbow And Shoulder Joint Torques Are Correlated With Body Mass Index But Not Game Pitch Count In Youth Baseball Pitchers, Jim Douglas Darke, Eshan M. Dandekar, Arnel Aguinaldo, Scott Hazelwood, Stephen M. Klisch
Elbow And Shoulder Joint Torques Are Correlated With Body Mass Index But Not Game Pitch Count In Youth Baseball Pitchers, Jim Douglas Darke, Eshan M. Dandekar, Arnel Aguinaldo, Scott Hazelwood, Stephen M. Klisch
Biomedical Engineering
The number of ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) reconstructive (i.e. “Tommy John”) surgeries performed on youth baseball pitchers have more than doubled since 2000 [1]. Routinely pitching while fatigued is considered a leading factor associated with UCL injuries; adolescent pitchers who had elbow or shoulder surgery were 36 times more likely to have routinely pitched with arm fatigue [1]. MLB/USA Baseball Pitch Smart guidelines limit 9-10 yr. old pitchers to a maximum 75 pitches per game, a figure based on long-term studies related to injury prevention [2]. Several studies have shown that pitching kinematics (e.g. elbow flexion/extension and pronation/supination, scapulothoracic internal-external …

Knee Biomechanics During Cycling Are Similar For Normal Weight And Obese Subjects, Juan D. Gutierrez-Franco, Jordan Skaro, Scott Hazelwood, Stephen M. Klisch
Biomedical Engineering
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disease of cartilage and bone tissue, and is linked to more than 70% of total hip and knee replacements [1]. In 1994 the direct and indirect costs of OA in the United States were $155 billion [2] and in 2006 OA resulted in approximately $10.5 billion in hospital charges [3]. Obesity is a risk factor for OA [1, 3, 4], likely due to increased knee loading [5, 6] and varus malalignment [7] in gait. Seated cycling has been recommended as a weight-loss exercise with lower knee loads than walking or jogging [8]. However, lack of …
Enhancing Regional Ocean Modeling Simulation Performance With The Xeon Phi Architecture, Chris Lupo, Maria Pantoja, Paul Choboter
Enhancing Regional Ocean Modeling Simulation Performance With The Xeon Phi Architecture, Chris Lupo, Maria Pantoja, Paul Choboter
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Ocean studies are crucial to many scientific disciplines. Due to the difficulty in probing the deep layers of the ocean and the scarcity of data in some of the oceans, the scientific community relies heavily on ocean simulation models. Ocean modeling is complex and computationally intensive, and improving the performance of these models will greatly advance and improve the work of ocean scientists. This paper presents a detailed exploration of the acceleration of the Regional Ocean Model System (ROMS) software with the latest Intel Xeon Phi x200 architectures. Both shared-memory and distributed-memory parallel computing models are evaluated. Results show run …

Our senior project team is designing a corn flour mill to help provide future sustainability to cater to the nutrition needs of the Malawian people. Engineers Without Borders (EWB) has been working on this issue for the past four years, but they have not achieved as high of yield of corn flour as desired. Using their advice, and the technical skills our team has learned through schooling, we will research, design, and eventually build a working prototype to address this issue. So far we have identified our customers needs, and done extensive background research into possible solutions. We have estimated …

The Inclusive Lectern fills a need at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for American with Disabilities Act (ADA) complaint lecterns, which accommodate presenters who use wheelchairs. While a prototype of the Inclusive Lectern was completed in 2015 there are inherent and vital flaws. This year's engineering team shall address these flaws by improving the actuation system (electrical-linear actuator) that enables adjustment of the lectern height. In addition, a retracting system will be incorporated, consisting of force transducers and micro-controllers for collision prevention between the work surface and the legs of the user when lowering the lectern. The new system will …
