Leveraging Biotechnologies To Understand The Mechanisms By Which California Market Squid Achieve Camouflage, Betina Concepcion, Mona Melody Kamranikia, Daniel Sanderson, Logan Williams Jan 2018

Leveraging Biotechnologies To Understand The Mechanisms By Which California Market Squid Achieve Camouflage, Betina Concepcion, Mona Melody Kamranikia, Daniel Sanderson, Logan Williams

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

The California market squid has specialized skin that is able to manipulate light through reversible condensation and assembly of reflectin proteins, allowing the squid to tune its skin iridescence for precise camouflage and underwater communication. Differential phosphorylation of reflectin proteins is observed to be contaminant with the reversible condensation and hierarchical assembly of reflectin proteins. Our mechanistic understanding of the role of protein phosphorylation in reflectin-mediated iridescence remains incomplete due to the inability to obtain large quantities (>lmg) of a homogenous population of phosphorylated reflectins. To overcome this limitation, we propose to leverage state-of-the-art biotechnologies. These include 1) an …

Scada System Maintenance: An Often Overlooked Necessity, Charles M. Burt, Kyle Fesit Jan 2018

Scada System Maintenance: An Often Overlooked Necessity, Charles M. Burt, Kyle Fesit

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

The design and implementation of a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system is typically undertaken by expert engineers and integration contractors. In order to provide a robust and reliable SCADA system, good design and installation practices are required. Preserving the initial SCADA system reliability requires good maintenance. Unfortunately, SCADA maintenance is often overlooked or underestimated. There are two potential providers for SCADA maintenance activities. Some SCADA maintenance activities are best provided by the developer or installer of the SCADA system, before closing out a project contract. Other SCADA maintenance requirements are best provided by the irrigation district or SCADA …

A New Approach To Vfd System Specifications And Rebates, Kyle Feist, Randall Cole, Charles M. Burt Jan 2018

A New Approach To Vfd System Specifications And Rebates, Kyle Feist, Randall Cole, Charles M. Burt

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

Variable frequency drives (VFDs) are used to provide flexibility and efficiency enhancements for agricultural pressurized irrigation systems. Standard 6-pulse VFDs commonly used for agricultural pumps can also create real problems with the pump motor and nearby electrical systems, unless mitigated by special equipment.

With support by the California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) Irrigation Training and Research Center (ITRC), Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) recently began a new rebate program for installing VFD systems for pressurized irrigation. A major component of the new rebate program is the requirement to comply with a detailed set of minimum VFD system design …

Race And Racism, Roberta Wolfson Jan 2018

Race And Racism, Roberta Wolfson

Diversity and Inclusion Resource Modules

The concept of race has informed almost every institution and social structure in US society since the early days of nation formation. Today, despite widespread claims that the United States has become post-racial, race still retains a unique power to influence most, if not all, contemporary institutions. Although race is a socially constructed concept, it nevertheless produces significant and long-lasting material effects in many institutional contexts. These effects can manifest in the form of racism, the systemic and institutional practices that put specific racial groups at a disadvantage (in the United States, these racial groups are defined as “not White”). …

Does Racial Triangulation Unravel Intersectionality?, Samantha Keng Jan 2018

Does Racial Triangulation Unravel Intersectionality?, Samantha Keng

sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies

This essay explores how Claire Kim’s idea of racial triangulation complicates intersectionality in its classic sense. Specifically, I argue that the racial triangulation of Asian Americans introduces new dilemmas for intersectional frameworks by destabilizing analyses of subject formation and understandings of privilege and oppression. How, for example, can Asian American complicity in anti Blackness be incorporated into understandings of identity and its mobilization? By expanding discussions of race beyond binary thinking, racial triangulation both poses new questions and creates new possibilities in the realm of intersectional theory. Especially given today’s racial landscape, this paper attempts to engage in the critical …

Banning Blackness: Race, Gender-Based Violence, And Classroom Censorship, Amelia Roskin-Frazee Jan 2018

Banning Blackness: Race, Gender-Based Violence, And Classroom Censorship, Amelia Roskin-Frazee

sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies

This paper examines how the relationship between race and gender-based violence impacts how schools choose which books to ban. In particular, this paper focuses on Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye (1970) and the novel’s place on the American Library Association’s compiled lists of the most frequency banned books in the United States. Using an analysis of The Bluest Eye in conversation with the work of academics such as Spillers (1987) and Crenshaw (1991), this paper posits the intersection between race and rape in The Bluest Eye — and how that intersection implicates white supremacy in gendered violence —which leads to …

The Challenges Lgbt+ Asylum-Seekers And Refugees Face In The United States, Yordanos Molla Jan 2018

The Challenges Lgbt+ Asylum-Seekers And Refugees Face In The United States, Yordanos Molla

sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies

The discussion surrounding LGBT+ asylum-seekers and refugees is becoming more prominent as advocacy for LGBT+ rights increases around the world. LGBT+ asylum-seekers and refugees encounter unique challenges due to their identities that shape their journey to find sanctuary, such as history of discrimination, requirement to validate one’s LGBT+ identity, and detrimental issues of mental health. Other problems regarding LGBT+ asylum-seekers and refugees involve mental health and active global legislation prohibiting homosexuality. These problems are analyzed throughout this research paper in order to provide solutions to improve the current resettlement process for LGBT+ refugees. Resolutions that assist LGBT+ asylum-seekers and refugees …

A Gender-Non-Conforming Method: Trans* Methodologies For Trans* Subjects, Ilia Forkin Jan 2018

A Gender-Non-Conforming Method: Trans* Methodologies For Trans* Subjects, Ilia Forkin

sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies

This paper analyses the methodology of sociological studies on gender-non-conforming (GNC) subjects in the context of prominent critiques by GNC theorists who have asserted the necessity of centering the needs, perspectives, and cultural work of transgender (trans*) and GNC academics and subjects. The paper explains how studies which favor an interactionist model of sociology prioritize notions of gender which uphold heteronormativity and erase the lived-experiences of the subjects they concern. As a solution to this obstacle, this paper proposes strategies to assist in the creation of participatory models of sociology which engage with gender in a way which reflects the …

Necrocapitalism And U.S. Imperialism: The Gulf War, Hurricane Katrina, Palestine, Gentrification, And Police, Gianna Bissa Jan 2018

Necrocapitalism And U.S. Imperialism: The Gulf War, Hurricane Katrina, Palestine, Gentrification, And Police, Gianna Bissa

sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies

U.S. American law has been responsible for slavery and genocide through the use of imperial forces such as the military and policing since the beginning of the formation of this nation. In this essay, I present contemporary forms of State sanctioned violence that have ultimately increased the United States’ economy through rendering particular communities as disposable. I use examples of war, removal, occupation, and murder perpetrated by American law in order to disrupt the notion that law guarantees security. Furthermore; I build from Foucault’s theories of biopolitics and apply a more modern framework of necrocapitalism to further contextualize and problematize …

Decolonizing Gender-Based Violence Advocacy: The Development Of An Undocumented Survivor Resource Training, Zulema Aleman Jan 2018

Decolonizing Gender-Based Violence Advocacy: The Development Of An Undocumented Survivor Resource Training, Zulema Aleman

sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies

The field of advocacy for the end of gender-based violence has constantly grown. Some could say that there is continual action taking place at multiple levels to ensure the protection of survivors, but the direction is often influenced by the perspective of those in positions of power. Regardless, both the social and legal movements have focused primarily on gender and often disregarded how other social identities, such as immigration status and race, intersect with sexual violence and thus create a range of experiences. The undocumented community is one of these groups who face higher rates of gender-based violence due to …

Seventeenth-Century Foundations Of The Moral Economy Of The English Crowd, Ryan Hund Jan 2018

Seventeenth-Century Foundations Of The Moral Economy Of The English Crowd, Ryan Hund

The Forum: Journal of History

The historian E.P Thompson famously described English peasant bread riots in the 18th century as based off of a shared ideal of an economy that obeyed moral rules. But where did this idea originate? I argue that conflicts over land enclosure in the seventeenth century led to peasants viewing the old nobility as defending them according to even older moral principles, a view which carried over into the later economic conflicts about which Thompson writes.

The "Wonderful Episodist": Henry James And Serialization, Rebecca Gates Jan 2018

The "Wonderful Episodist": Henry James And Serialization, Rebecca Gates

The Forum: Journal of History

In this essay, I argue that although the nineteenth-century writer Henry James disliked the popular format of serial publication, it actually served an unacknowledged purpose in his works: breaking up his novels into manageable chunks. This allowed readers a greater appreciation of his fresh stylistic ability and intricate descriptions. I first introduce the current scholarship on Henry James as well as serialization. Then, I provide context regarding this publication format and biographical details of the writer Henry James, and look at his literary importance. Next, I focus on one specific work called The American, evaluating the author’s motivations and viewpoint …

"Captain America Must Die": How A Super Soldier Became A Patriot, Mackenna Johnson Jan 2018

"Captain America Must Die": How A Super Soldier Became A Patriot, Mackenna Johnson

The Forum: Journal of History

This paper analyzes the character of Captain America in the midst of the Cold War, and particularly asks how and to what extent the character reflects his contemporary sociopolitical atmosphere. To achieve this end, I first establish the vital role of popular culture, especially comic books, in modern historical research. I then discuss the history of Captain America, the sociopolitical situation of the 1970s, and, finally, introduce the Secret Empire and Nomad storylines of the 1970s, which form the basis of my argument. The most valuable primary source in this paper is not the comic books themselves, but an interview …

Rick, Morty, And Absurdism: The Millennial Allure Of Dark Humor, Kim Koltun Jan 2018

Rick, Morty, And Absurdism: The Millennial Allure Of Dark Humor, Kim Koltun

The Forum: Journal of History

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the millennial generation’s appeal to dark and absurdist forms of humor, using the show Rick and Morty as a primary example. I first establish my definition of Absurdism—based on Nagel and Camus—and how Rick and Morty qualifies as an Absurdist work. I then go on to outline the popularity of the show among millennial audiences and explore its allure. There are three important sociological contexts to this explanation: the contrast between upbringing and reality, expedited modernity, and rapidly changing information structures. These set the stage for a distinctive style of humor that …

Historicizing Whiteness And White Supremacy, Anthony Albey Soliman Jan 2018

Historicizing Whiteness And White Supremacy, Anthony Albey Soliman

The Forum: Journal of History

From the end of the eighteenth century to the mid twentieth century, demographic changes reformulated the ideal American citizen to be a white landowning American man. My historiographical paper covers the works of four authors, discussing the centrality of race in their works. In my paper, I cover several themes that are present throughout these disparate works, such as the role of space, citizenship, and race on the peripheries of settlement, and the highly mutable nature of whiteness regarding labor and nationality. By critiquing some of the anachronistic tendencies and omissions of contingency by some historians, I display the ways …

The Selected Destruction Of Concentration Camps: Why The Nazi Regime Left Some Intact, Cali Vance Jan 2018

The Selected Destruction Of Concentration Camps: Why The Nazi Regime Left Some Intact, Cali Vance

The Forum: Journal of History

The Holocaust is a well-known phenomenon throughout the world. Something that is less known and less researched is the destruction of the concentration camps within the German empire. There were three main players in the aftermath of the concentration camps; the Nazi officials, the Allied forces, and the Soviets. The Nazi officials followed two paths, either destroying the camps or remaining in the camps until the liberating forces arrived. The liberators, such as the Allied forces and the Soviets, came across camps with prisoners still behind the barbed wire fences or camps that had been partially or fully abandoned and …

Running Title: Insights Into Catalytic Mechanism Of Aerobic 4-Hydroxybutryl-Coa Dehydratase, Danielle Baur Jan 2018

Running Title: Insights Into Catalytic Mechanism Of Aerobic 4-Hydroxybutryl-Coa Dehydratase, Danielle Baur

STAR Program Research Presentations

In archaea, HP/HB cycle is essential and proceeds via the most efficient pathway different from that in the well-studied bacterial C-cycling system. 4-Hydroxybutryl-CoA dehydratese is a widespread HP/HB enzyme in archaea and contains the iron-sulfur cluster and conserved catalytic domains and residues. In anaerobic bacteria, 4HBD is also essential. Although anaerobic HBD have been structurally well studied, the role of aerobic environment in catalysis remains elusive. Here, we investigated the structure of hamarceal 4HBD from Nitrosopumilus maritimus. We present the crystal structures of high-resolution catalytically active domains of tetrameric 4HBD, in liganded form and complexed with FAD substrates. We found …

X-Ray Spectroscopy Of Nio And Nanodiamond At Ssrl, Jackson Earl

STAR Program Research Presentations

The first aspect of this research project focuses on investigating the surface chemistry of high pressure high temperature (HPHT) nanodiamond by using X-ray spectroscopy techniques at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL). HPHT nanodiamond is being examined as a biosensing tool for electric field detection based on the fluorescent nitrogen vacancy center hosted within diamond. With use of the transition edge spectrometer (TES), a state-of-the-art X-ray fluorescence detector, we are able to probe the surface and bulk properties of diamond. Preliminary work using density functional theory (DFT) has been done, offering insight into ground state energies and electronic structure. DFT …

On-Ice Arctic Sea Ice Thickness Measurements By Auger, Core, And Electromagnetic Induction, Ryan E. Avila, Benjamin Holt Jan 2018

On-Ice Arctic Sea Ice Thickness Measurements By Auger, Core, And Electromagnetic Induction, Ryan E. Avila, Benjamin Holt

STAR Program Research Presentations

Ice thickness measurements have been taken in the arctic through a variety of means for a long time in order to better understand the long-term changes to sea ice. This project is focused on measurements made directly on the ice by using an auger or electromagnetic sounding which have both been shown to be highly accurate compared to other observational methods. Our first goal is to create and update an archive of sea ice data that collects smaller separated data sets in one easy to access location for other researchers to use. Our second goal is to use this data …

Understanding Soil Moisture Levels On Soledad Ridge, Santa Rosa Island, California During The Summer Months, Dulce M. Lopez, Stephen Bednar, Kathryn Mceachern

STAR Program Research Presentations

Santa Rosa Island located off the coast of Santa Barbara County was grazed by non-native ungulates leaving the island stripped of vegetation topsoil layer. With the removal of ungulates, the National Park Service began restoring the Cloud Forest on Soledad Ridge. Soledad Ridge is said to have once been covered by large stands of island oaks (Quercus tometella) and other endemic and native plants. The unique leaf and structural morphology of such vegetation collects water from wind derived fog which serves as the main source of water for this unique ecosystem. In an effort to jump-start ecosystem vegetation …
