Heganism, Thomas E. Randall Feb 2018

Heganism, Thomas E. Randall

Between the Species

An emblematic association exists between meat consumption and the gender identity hegemonic masculinity. This association is so strong that men who pursue meatless diets (especially vegans) are likely to be socially ostracized. Heganism is a diet/gender identity that aims to reconstruct hegemonic masculinity with the goal of removing these stigmas attached to male veganism. Yet heganism fails to do this, and, in fact, worsens the marginalization of male vegans. Therefore, heganism ought to be rejected. Instead, an alternative option for reducing the marginalization of male vegans could be found in the emergent literature on non-hegemonic masculinities. By rejecting hegemonic …

Social Class, Jean Williams Feb 2018

Social Class, Jean Williams

Diversity and Inclusion Resource Modules

Social class affects social opportunities and arrangements, economic and political issues, and public policies; it is fundamentally connected to power differentials across all these areas. This module proposes to provide an overview of social class as an analytical concept and social location, to assist faculty with key articles and books to attain a solid background in the topic, and to provide sample activities to teach students about social class. The module will theorize and define class intersectionally, in order to demonstrate the ways that it is constructed in concert with race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and other aspects of identity. The …

Discrimination In The Workplace: Using Psychological Research For Prevention, Carrie A. Langner Feb 2018

Discrimination In The Workplace: Using Psychological Research For Prevention, Carrie A. Langner

Diversity and Inclusion Resource Modules

Bias in the workplace is a problem across the private and public sector. There are a set of tools in social psychology that are useful to other disciplines in preventing and responding to discriminatory behavior. An awareness of these largely unconscious processes and potential interventions for combatting bias can make the difference for an organization that aims to treat applicants and employees fairly. Most employers do not want to discriminate and almost all would like to avoid lawsuits. Knowledge about addressing discrimination is a valuable feature for Cal Poly graduates on the job market. Further, organizations benefit from diversity due …

State Of The Art Resilient Design Symposium, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo Feb 2018

State Of The Art Resilient Design Symposium, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Resilience Symposium

What is resilient design? How does it work? What are emergent ways to apply resilient thinking?

These questions formed the basis for the College of Architecture and Environmental Design’s symposium Resilient Design: State of the Art and Emerging Issues for the Built Environment. Twelve distinguished professionals made clear that the built and natural environments are inextricably intertwined, and we urgently need a more nuanced and interdisciplinary approach to resilient design. The presenters reminded us that the problems we face are complex and that we have the agency to act through design. They insisted that we need to act now and …

Nosce Te Ipsum (Know Thyself): Recognizing Privilege In Yourself And Society, Ryan Alaniz Feb 2018

Nosce Te Ipsum (Know Thyself): Recognizing Privilege In Yourself And Society, Ryan Alaniz

Diversity and Inclusion Resource Modules

This module will enable faculty and students from across colleges to critically examine their own privileges through reading, dialogue, and Learn By Doing activities. The pragmatic focus will be on self-reflexivity and empowering users to wrestle with how their social identity provides advantages or disadvantages in each of their social relationships. It also clearly addresses two of the four of the university diversity learning objectives. On the one hand, through self-reflection about one’s privileges one innately becomes aware of how privilege may shape social relationships. Ideally, this engenders empathy and consideration of other’s perspectives. On the other hand, as noted …

An Overview Of Body Armor And Single Plate Impact Dynamics, Thomas Matzinger Feb 2018

An Overview Of Body Armor And Single Plate Impact Dynamics, Thomas Matzinger

Master's Theses

In the past, personal body armor was constructed of simple plates of high- strength alloys. However, with the advancement of modern combat and weaponry, particularly armor-piercing ammunition, personal body armor has evolved into more complex and effective metal, ceramic, and composite structures. This paper lays the groundwork for experimental and modeling methods used to understand the effectiveness of new armor designs. Focusing on the first layer of modern body armor, the ”High Impedance” layer. Experiments measuring the change in velocity of bullets passing through aluminum and titanium plates were conducted. These experiments were then replicated through FEA simulation.

Assessment Of Maternal And Infant Outcomes Of Moderately Malnourished Pregnant Adolescents In Malawi, Alyssa Marie Friebert Feb 2018

Assessment Of Maternal And Infant Outcomes Of Moderately Malnourished Pregnant Adolescents In Malawi, Alyssa Marie Friebert

Master's Theses

Background: Adolescent childbearing and maternal malnutrition are common in low- and middle-income countries and are associated with increased risk for poor maternal and infant outcomes. Adolescent pregnancy compounded with moderate malnutrition exacerbates outcomes common to both individually. Supplementary foods may be a way to improve outcomes in malnourished adolescent pregnant women.

Objective: To retrospectively assess maternal and infant outcomes in moderately malnourished pregnant young adolescents (16-17 YO), older adolescents (18-19 YO), and adults (≥20 YO) in response to one of three nutritional interventions and in a pooled treatment group analysis, and to assess differences in infant outcomes by infant gender. …

Semantic Document Clustering Using Information From Wordnet And Dbpedia, Lubomir Stanchev Jan 2018

Semantic Document Clustering Using Information From Wordnet And Dbpedia, Lubomir Stanchev

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Semantic document clustering is a type of unsupervised learning in which documents are grouped together based on their meaning. Unlike traditional approaches that cluster documents based on common keywords, this technique can group documents that share no words in common as long as they are on the same subject. We compute the similarity between two documents as a function of the semantic similarity between the words and phrases in the documents. We model information from WordNet and DBPedia as a probabilistic graph that can be used to compute the similarity between two terms. We experimentally validate our algorithm on the …

Francis Wolff’S Flawed Philosophical Defense Of Bullfighting, Gabriel Andrade Jan 2018

Francis Wolff’S Flawed Philosophical Defense Of Bullfighting, Gabriel Andrade

Between the Species

As a result of Catalonia’s ban of bullfighting in 2011, in Spain there has been a renowned interest in the ethical debate about bullfighting. Most defenders of bullfighting are Spaniards, but the most systematic is French philosopher Francis Wolff. In this article, I review Wolff’s most persistent arguments in favor of bullfighting, and I offer my own refutations. Wolff argues bullfighting is not torture, bulls do not suffer, bulls must die, and bullfighting tradition must be preserved. All of these claims are dubious, as they are based on shaky assumptions and fallacious reasoning.

Review Of Louis Komjathy’S Taming The Wild Horse: An Annotated Translation And Study Of The Daoist Horse Taming Pictures, Regina Swanson Jan 2018

Review Of Louis Komjathy’S Taming The Wild Horse: An Annotated Translation And Study Of The Daoist Horse Taming Pictures, Regina Swanson

Between the Species

Abstract: This review of Louis Komjathy’s translation and interpretation of a 13th century set of illustrated poems places the work squarely within the emerging field of animal studies. Though essentially a map for Daoist monastic training, Komjathy notes that the Horse Taming Pictures, as he names them, are also about horses at some level. He therefore engages these pictures not as relics of a medieval eremitic order, but as works of art and poetry incorporating horses as timeless symbols and living creatures. While not strictly a work of ethics, Taming the Wild Horse takes time to consider human …

Coastal Upwelling Seasonality And Variability Of Temperature And Chlorophyll In A Small Coastal Embayment, Ryan K. Walter, Kevin Armenta, Brandon Shearer, Ian C. Robbins, John Steinbeck Jan 2018

Coastal Upwelling Seasonality And Variability Of Temperature And Chlorophyll In A Small Coastal Embayment, Ryan K. Walter, Kevin Armenta, Brandon Shearer, Ian C. Robbins, John Steinbeck

Physics

While the seasonality of wind-driven coastal upwelling in eastern boundary upwelling systems has long been established, many studies describe two distinct seasons (upwelling and non-upwelling), a generalized framework that does not capture details relevant to marine ecosystems. In this contribution, we present a more detailed description of the annual cycle and upwelling seasonality for an understudied location along the central California coast. Using both the mean monthly upwelling favorable wind stress and the monthly standard deviation, we define the following seasons (contiguous months) and a transitional period (non-contiguous months): “Winter Storms” season (Dec-Jan-Feb), “Upwelling Transition” period (Mar and Jun), …

Preparation For The Study Of Gene Expression Aboard The International Space Station, Amber Paturzo Jan 2018

Preparation For The Study Of Gene Expression Aboard The International Space Station, Amber Paturzo

STAR Program Research Presentations

WetLab-2 performs quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) aboard the micro-gravity environment of the International Space Station in order to research how the stress of micro-gravity affects an organism’s RNA production and gene expression. This on-station qPCR allows researchers to gather information earlier and thereby allow them to modify experiments in a matter of hours rather than wait until the next flight opportunity. After a successful validation flight on SpaceX-8 and follow-up investigation on SpaceX-9, system components must now be adjusted for a new type of biological sample. Specifically, the WetLab-2 facility includes a commercial qPCR instrument (RNA SmartCycler), a sample …

Implementation Of Planetary Protection Requirements On Robotic Missions, Lauren M. Tran

STAR Program Research Presentations

NASA has developed mandatory planetary protection requirements for all outbound and inbound space missions beyond Earth orbit. Planetary Protection policies are set by COSPAR (Committee of Space Research) under the international provisions of the United Nation’s OST (Outer Space Treaty). It aims to promote responsible scientific exploration of the solar system, as well as support the study of chemical evolution and origins of life that may be present. All robotic missions must be categorized depending on their planetary destination and the mission type (flyby, orbiter, or lander). Round trip missions are all classified as Category V missions (restricted or unrestricted), …

Astrobee: Air Sampling Device And Zero Robotics Game, Bryce Van Ross

STAR Program Research Presentations

Astrobee is a free-flying, 1'x1'x1' cuboid robot that is planned to be onboard the International Space Station (ISS) by February 2019. Astrobee will be the successor of the current ISS free-flyer, SPHERES. Free-flying robots possess a range of potential. They can facilitate work for astronauts aboard the ISS by performing rudimentary tasks and housekeeping (e.g., record-keeping, sensor analysis, etc.) efficiently. Free-flyers also act as innovative testbeds for guest scientists to perform zero-gravity control theory research. In recent years, SPHERES has hosted annual Zero Robotics (ZR) programming competitions in collaboration with MIT, challenging middle and high school students to write code …

A 12 Year Temperature And Wind Speed Climatology For The Marshall Field Site Near Boulder Colorado 2006-2018, John Nicholas Adrian, Scott Landolt Jan 2018

A 12 Year Temperature And Wind Speed Climatology For The Marshall Field Site Near Boulder Colorado 2006-2018, John Nicholas Adrian, Scott Landolt

STAR Program Research Presentations

The Denver-Boulder region in Colorado is located on the border of two distinct weather regimes, the Rocky Mountains to the west and the Great Plains to the east. This region experiences inclement and sometimes unpredictable weather events, which can be accompanied by changes in temperatures and wind speed. To better understand the climate for the region, nearly 12 years of temperature and wind speed data from the Marshall Field Site were analyzed to assess changes in these parameters over time. Methods: Temperature recordings were primarily taken from a CS-500L probe, with data gaps filled in from a Lufft WS600 and …
