Land Use Patterns: Life In Paradise, Sophia Smith, Nolan Delgado, Tiana Shiroma
Research
This poster shows a map of the town, depicting the different land uses. As shown here, most of the town was zoned low-density residential. While there were some higher density residential developments, apartment complexes and mobile home parks, for example, single-family homes were the dominant house type. Commercial zones were concentrated on the two main north-south routes, Skyway and Clark Roads.
The map shows the many riparian corridors in the town, as well as various community facilities. Agricultural areas are prevalent on the south side of town, and resource conservation areas are located on the east and west.
Greenbelt, Maryland: Planning Precedent, Emma Puryear, Gabrielle Icardo
Greenbelt, Maryland: Planning Precedent, Emma Puryear, Gabrielle Icardo
Precedents
Greenbelt, Maryland (1935-38): Greenbelt was one of three so-called “greenbelt towns” built by the federal government as a response to the jobs and housing crises of the Great Depression. Located in forested land on a broad ridge some eight miles from Washington D.C., the town was conceived as a public cooperative community based on ideas promoted by Rexford Guy Tugwell, head of President Roosevelt’s Resettlement Administration. Tugwell wanted the towns to foster community spirit by combining the best of rural life and urban life: woods and open spaces, theaters and shops.
The purpose of studying at this precedent was to …

The Psychology Of Sexual Harassment, Shawn Meghan Burn
Psychology and Child Development
Sexual harassment (SH) occurs when people are targets of unwanted sexual comments, sexual gestures, or sexual actions because of their actual or perceived gender, gender expression, or sexual orientation. Due to its frequency and harmful effects on people and organizations, and because it is often a symptom of social inequalities, SH is of concern to psychologists. Using psychological theory and research as well as intersectional and contextual lenses, this article describes how SH is varied in its forms, targets, and origins. I explore explanations for SH with a focus on sociocultural gender and power perspectives. I also employ a person-by-situation …

The Spectrum Of Service: Refocusing Academic Work Through A Military Lens, Brenda M. Helmbrecht, Dan Reno
The Spectrum Of Service: Refocusing Academic Work Through A Military Lens, Brenda M. Helmbrecht, Dan Reno
English
In higher education, faculty, administrators, and students often use the term “work” casually: we go to work, we do our work, and we always have work left to finish. Thus, we appreciate the journal’s editors asking us to slow down and fully consider our work as instructors and scholars in the field of composition studies. Here we explore what it means to approach work through the lens of service. While service is an essential component of academic work, we seldom explore how the two concepts inform one another. As a WPA and an Army veteran, we decided to join our …

Implementation Of Blockchain Technology In The Construction Industry, Steven Graham
Construction Management
In general, the construction industry has been pretty resistant to change. While most industries have gained in productivity over the years through implementation of new technologies and other factors, construction industry productivity has been on a steady decline since the 1960s. Even though there are a multitude of reasons for this, including more complex building types and a decline in the workforce, the major problem holding construction back are project management issues and alienation of project stakeholders in the construction process. Some improvements have been made to help with collaboration between parties, like BIM (building information modeling) and project management …
Reducing Energy Use In Excavators With Biodiesel, Omeed Abolfathi
Reducing Energy Use In Excavators With Biodiesel, Omeed Abolfathi
Construction Management
In assessing the life-cycle cost of a building, the operation energy and construction energy are considered. The operation energy constitutes 90 to 95 percent of the lifetime energy use of a building. Concern over reducing operation energy has led to advancements where many buildings can now be considered net zero. While considerable advancements were made in achieving net zero in the operation, construction energy use has largely remained the same. To achieve net zero for the entire life-cycle of the building, construction energy consumption needs to be reduced. Excavators are one of the most popular pieces of construction equipment. They …

Enhancing Group Social Perceptiveness Through A Swarm-Based Decision-Making Platform, David A. Askay, Lynn E. Metcalf, Louis Rosenberg, Gregg Willcox
Industrial Technology and Packaging
Swarm Intelligence is natural phenomenon that enables social animals to make group decisions in real-time systems. This process has been deeply studied in fish schools, bird flocks, and bee swarms, where collective intelligence has been observed to emerge. The present paper describes swarm.ai—a collaborative technology that enables swarms of humans to collectively converge upon a decision as a real-time system. Then we present the results of a study investigating if groups working as “human swarms” can amplify their social perceptiveness, a key predictor of collective intelligence. Results showed that groups reduced their social perceptiveness errors by more than half when …
