Paradise Redux, Kent Macdonald
Paradise Redux, Kent Macdonald
Project Description and Assignments
This document lays out the two types of work that the students undertook over the course of six months: the creation of overarching planning guidelines and the development of architectural proposals for specific sites in Paradise.
The planning work was a group effort lasting about five weeks. In small teams at first, the students did research on the town, as well as some historical planning precedents. Later, they came together to establish explicit goals and an armature for the town’s reconstruction.
Following the initial phase, the students – working alone – chose project sites and building types, which they then …

Scada Preventative Maintenance: Reducing The Potential Of Unexpected Failures, Kyle Feist, Zachary Markow, Charles M. Burt
Scada Preventative Maintenance: Reducing The Potential Of Unexpected Failures, Kyle Feist, Zachary Markow, Charles M. Burt
BioResource and Agricultural Engineering
Irrigation district infrastructure utilizing Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems can perform a critical service to irrigators, but also present the risk of damage to nearby property and humans in certain failure scenarios. It is therefore prudent to minimize the scope, frequency, and duration of SCADA component failure. However, it is typical for irrigation districts to focus on corrective (post-failure) SCADA maintenance activities, instead of investing in preventive maintenance.
Preventive SCADA maintenance requires budget and labor investment. However, it is anticipated that it is possible to balance the effectiveness and expenses of a preventative maintenance program with some strategic …

Cultural Immersion Project, Julie Rodgers
Diversity and Inclusion Resource Modules
The Cultural Immersion Project is an experiential-based, quarter-long learning activity designed for use with students in Cross-Cultural Psychology, Multicultural Psychology, and related courses. Intercultural competence refers to the ability to confidently interact with members of a culture different from one’s own, while being aware of the culture’s social norms and expectations (Deardorff, 2006). Students select a group, and over the course of a quarter/semester, learn about and experience (to the extent possible/appropriate) the cultural practices/norms/values of their group (e.g., via interviews, cooking food, listening to music, dance instruction, arts, literature, etc.). Students document their experiences (at least 6 different types …

The Non-Parametric Luminosity Evolution Of Long Gamma-Ray Bursts And Star Rate Formation, Miguel Aguilar, Maria Dainotti
STAR Program Research Presentations
In this research project the luminosity function of gamma-ray bursts was computed using the Efron- Petrosian method, which allowed us to find such properties an a non-parametric way. Data gathered from the Swift and Konus-Wind satellites was added for the first time by Fermi Satellite. The computation showed similar traces and patterns of the luminosity function compared to the ones of presented by Petrosian et al 2015. Further development needs to be performed for the display of the star formation rate.

Analyzing The Hypervolume Of Plant Functional Traits In The Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, Rosina Garcia, David Schimel, Ryan Pavlick
STAR Program Research Presentations
Studying Earth’s biodiversity is important in understanding how ecosystems are changing in response to environmental stressors. Particularly, monitoring Earth via remote sensing can give us high-resolution data of plant functional traits, such as canopy height, leaf mass per area (LMA), and leaf nitrogen content, which provide insight into ecosystem changes. We mapped out remote sensing airborne data from the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range in California and used R to create a hypervolume of the vegetated area. Hypervolumes are useful in creating a three-dimensional visualization of data to understand the relationships among different traits. We computed the three-dimensional space of the …

The Nuclear physics, Particle physics, Astrophysics, and Cosmology Initiative (NPAC) at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory engages in cross-disciplinary scientific collaboration projects to address fundamental questions about the origin and evolution of the Universe. The next Enriched Xenon Observatory (nEXO) is a proposed experiment to search for the rare “neutrino-less double beta decay” (0vBB) process. The observation of 0vBB decay would demonstrate lepton number violation and confirm that the neutrino is a Majorana fermion, where neutrino is identical to its antiparticle. This would have important implications for our understanding of neutrino mass and the origin of the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the …

Process Of Developing The Artificial Snow Machine System, Aala Al Hasan, Scott Landolt
STAR Program Research Presentations
In order to test different types of anti-icing fluids that are used on aircraft surfaces prior to take off, it is necessary to develop a machine that artificially generates snow. Deicing aircraft is a two-step process that consists of applying both deicing and anti-icing fluids. Deicing fluids are applied to eliminate accumulated ice on aircraft surfaces that could obstruct proper airflow. Anti-icing fluids are then applied to prevent the additional accumulation of frost, ice, and/or snow for a period of time known as the endurance time. The endurance time is the duration the anti-icing fluid remains effective on the aircraft …

Membrane proteins make up approximately 30% of the cellular proteome and account for over 60% of pharmaceutical targets.1 Determining the structures of this class of proteins is critical to our understanding of disease states and will advance rational drug design. But membrane proteins have limited solubility, rarely form large crystals that diffract well, and often misfold outside of a bilayer, hindering crystallographic studies.1 Nanolipoprotein particles (NLPs) have arisen as a platform to readily solubilize membrane proteins while mimicking a native lipid environment. NLPs consist of a discoidal phospholipid bilayer encircled by an apolipoprotein belt. In an effort to optimize and …

Comparing Regional Population Genetic Effects In Leptasterias Spp., Kristen N. Runge, Sarah Cohen
STAR Program Research Presentations
Leptasterias spp. is a species complex of six-rayed intertidal sea stars found along the northeast Pacific coast. A developmental mode of brooding their young, rather than broadcasting for planktonic development, limits dispersal away from the natal area, and may also result in local adaptation of populations. Local adaptation may lead to morphological and behavioral differences among populations. Previous studies on behavior in Leptasterias spp. have shown that activity levels may vary by population and region. Across three regions from California to Washington, differences were only observed between central California and more northern regions while northern California, Oregon, and Washington were …

STAR Program Research Presentations
We study the behavior of the liquid-solid-vapor contact line of water held in a narrow gap between two plates. A syringe pump injects and withdraws a constant, small volume of the water, driving the contact line back and forth repeatedly and changing its shape. We take photos of the contact line after each cycle. Comparing subsequent images to each other, we find that after several cycles the contact line reaches one of two steady states: a reversible steady state, where the shape is not changing, or a fluctuating steady state, where the shape continues to change slightly. Experiments on acrylic …

Conditioning Of Velocity Profiles In Pipelines, Charles M. Burt, Pascal Hellmann, Zachary Markow
BioResource and Agricultural Engineering
This paper reports on the testing of a relatively simple flow conditioner for pipelines. This research found that a pipeline velocity flow conditioner that is constructed with an internal cone, having an inside diameter of 80 percent of the pipeline ID, provided the best results. It provided good velocity conditioning at a distance of two diameters downstream of an obstruction. The minor loss is equal to the velocity head of the flow in the original pipeline diameter.

Demographics: Life In Paradise, Elisabeth Frizzell, Victor Hoyos
Research
This poster provides statistical information derived from the US Census Bureau on the town’s population, such as age, race, income, and education levels.
The most salient points derived from this information have to do with the inhabitants’ median age, ethnicity, and income. By these measures and compared to the population of California as a whole, the citizenry of Paradise was generally older (median age of 50 versus 36), whiter (92% versus 72%), and less educated (percentage with a bachelor's degree or higher 25% versus 32%). The town also has fewer households with children (30% versus 46%) and proportionally more people …

Reunite Community, Gabrielle Icardo, Victor Hoyos, Nolan Delgado
Goals
While the bulk of Paradise would remain as it was – a single-family community nestled in the pine forest – the students wanted to counter the lack of a sense of place in Paradise. To that end, they proposed creating several areas throughout the town that would have a more village-like or Main Street atmosphere.
The largest of these would be two pedestrian-oriented districts at either end of the main part of Pearson Road, connected by an expanded Paradise Community Park. In these new districts, named East Village and West Village, many of the town’s principal civic, cultural, and commercial …
