Human Identity, Animal Identity, And Reflective Endorsement, Rachel D. Robison-Greene Mar 2021

Human Identity, Animal Identity, And Reflective Endorsement, Rachel D. Robison-Greene

Between the Species

In this paper, I will argue that philosophers have overestimated the value of reflective endorsement. Introspection does not, as many philosophers have supposed, shine a searchlight on a person’s authentic identity. Our “selves” are not as transparent to us as we would like to think. In fact, much of the work done in an introspective mood is confabulation or rationalization rather than genuine self-discovery. I will argue that if this is the case, the outputs of the reflective endorsement process are not inherently normative in the way that thinkers like Harry Frankfurt and Christine Korsgaard have suggested.

If this is …

A Battle Over 20th Century Textbooks: How The Civil War Is Still Fought In American Classrooms, Katie Court Mar 2021

A Battle Over 20th Century Textbooks: How The Civil War Is Still Fought In American Classrooms, Katie Court

History

This paper analyzed the emergence of Lost Cause history textbooks in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Following the Civil War, Confederate societies such as the United Daughters of the Confederacy and United Confederate Veterans had a vested interest in positively portraying the South. From 1890-1930, Confederate societies attempted to expel textbooks that spoke unfavorably of the Confederacy, and instead encouraged states all around the country to follow stringent rules of how to discuss historical events. This research was led by material written by these societies and the textbooks they endorsed or expelled, in order to analyze the origins …

Trudging The Road Of Happy Destiny: The Gift Economy In Early Alcoholics Anonymous History And The Creation Of The Big Book, Timothy J. Parker Mar 2021

Trudging The Road Of Happy Destiny: The Gift Economy In Early Alcoholics Anonymous History And The Creation Of The Big Book, Timothy J. Parker

History

In 1939, Bill Wilson and his peers published Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How Many Thousands of Men and Women Have Recovered from Alcoholism, and in doing so, codified a spiritual gift economy through which millions of people have recovered from alcoholism and other addictions. This project examines the pragmatic formulation of this economy and argues its origins were driven as much by self-interest as altruism. It further explores the syncretic leadership of Bill Wilson and his mark on "The Big Book."

From Sidious To Nixon: The Parallels Between Star Wars And Vietnam, Brennan Simpson

History

In the case of a film franchise that features twelve movies, five television series, and various other forms of media by the time this paper was written, many people may be surprised to hear that Star Wars was actually inspired by one of the most questionable moments in American history. However, the time period in which Star Wars creator George Lucas first wrote what became this world’s ‘‘first step into a larger world’’ actually greatly reflected what ended up on the big screen. Even though the Star Wars movies take place ‘‘a long time ago in a galaxy far, far …

Quantum Computing: Resolving Myths, From Physics To Metaphysics, Jacob R. Mandel Mar 2021

As the field of quantum computing becomes popularized, myths or misconceptions will inevitably come along with it. From the sci-fi genre to the casual usage of the term quantum, idealism begins to take over our projections of the technological future. But what are quantum computers? And what does quantum mean? How are they any different than the computers we use on an everyday basis? Will there be quantum computing smartphones? Are quantum computers just a faster version of conventional computing or a wholly new way of computing altogether? The objective of this paper is to resolve common myths or misconceptions …

Potential Environmental Effects Of Deepwater Floating Offshore Wind Energy Facilities, Hayley Farr, Benjamin Ruttenberg, Ryan K. Walter, Yi-Hui Wang, Crow White Mar 2021

Potential Environmental Effects Of Deepwater Floating Offshore Wind Energy Facilities, Hayley Farr, Benjamin Ruttenberg, Ryan K. Walter, Yi-Hui Wang, Crow White

Physics

Over the last few decades, the offshore wind energy industry has expanded its scope from turbines mounted on foundations driven into the seafloor and standing in less than 60 m of water, to floating turbines moored in 120 m of water, to prospecting the development of floating turbines moored in ~1,000 m of water. Since there are few prototype turbines and mooring systems of these deepwater, floating offshore wind energy facilities (OWFs) currently deployed, their effects on the marine environment are speculative. Using the available scientific literature concerning appropriate analogs, including fixed-bottom OWFs, land-based wind energy facilities, wave and tidal …

Conclusions. Food stamp enrollment harms mental health more than it benefits it, …

Physical Activity Guidelines For People With Alzheimer’S Disease Of Various Ambulatory And Cognitive Status, Amanda Katherine Wright Mar 2021

Physical Activity Guidelines For People With Alzheimer’S Disease Of Various Ambulatory And Cognitive Status, Amanda Katherine Wright

Kinesiology and Public Health

With the rapidly growing elderly population in the United States, the number of people diagnosed with dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is increasing dramatically. For these patients, it is crucial to slow the rate of progression. Research has proven that exercise improves cognition, and recent findings suggest a similar association among those with AD. However, this is complicated by the large majority of AD patients becoming non-ambulatory as the disease progresses. Thus, there is a large gap in the literature to meet the needs of non-ambulatory AD patients working to slow their disease’s progression. The first purpose of this article …

These metrics were measured with the original model including the …

Physics Engine On The Gpu With Opengl Compute Shaders, Quan Huy Minh Bui Mar 2021

Physics Engine On The Gpu With Opengl Compute Shaders, Quan Huy Minh Bui

Master's Theses

Any kind of graphics simulation can be thought of like a fancy flipbook. This notion is, of course, nothing new. For instance, in a game, the central computing unit (CPU) needs to process frame by frame, figuring out what is happening, and then finally issues draw calls to the graphics processing unit (GPU) to render the frame and display it onto the monitor. Traditionally, the CPU has to process a lot of things: from the creation of the window environment for the processed frames to be displayed, handling game logic, processing artificial intelligence (AI) for non-player characters (NPC), to the …

Natural And Experimental Noise Affects Acoustic Communication In Songbirds, Veronica Arlene Reed Mar 2021

Natural And Experimental Noise Affects Acoustic Communication In Songbirds, Veronica Arlene Reed

Master's Theses

Background noise is ubiquitous and can impair acoustic communication and influence signaling behavior in animals. Despite evidence demonstrating myriad effects of anthropogenic noise on animal communication, precisely how natural background noise influences communication and behavior remains unclear. Yet, natural sources of background noise, such as rushing rivers or crashing ocean surf, share similar power spectra to sources of anthropogenic noise and can occur at high amplitudes, potentially masking acoustic signals.

To investigate the effects of water-generated noise on songbird behavior, we experimentally broadcast landscape-level playbacks of ocean surf and river noise in coastal California, USA, and riparian habitat in Idaho, …
