Iron Compounds In Brazilian Pre-Columbian Pigments Identified By 57Fe Mossbauer Spectroscopy And X-Ray Powder Diffraction, F. F.T. De Araujo, M. A.B. De Araujo, R. B. Frankel, G. C. Papaefthymiou, V. W. Vieira

Physics

Mossbauer spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction have been used to identify iron compounds in pre-Columbian pigments, probably used for art decorating, collected from the oldest archaeological site of Early Man presently known in American at Sao Raimundo Nonato, in Northeastern Brazil. The iron compounds were identified as being alpha-Fe203 (haematite) with full Morin transition supressed and small particles of alpha-FeOOH (goethite).

Multicolored Simon Newcomb Problems, Don Rawlings

Mathematics

Recent progress made by Desarmenien and Foata in the area of permutation statistics indirectly points out a certain gap in the theory of sequence enumeration. The remedy of the situation lies in the consideration of some colorful extensions of the Simon Newcomb problem.

Self-Mode-Locking Of A Semiconductor Laser Using Positive Feedback, Dennis J. Derickson, R. J. Helkey, A. Mar, P. A. Morton, J. E. Bowers Jan 1990

Self-Mode-Locking Of A Semiconductor Laser Using Positive Feedback, Dennis J. Derickson, R. J. Helkey, A. Mar, P. A. Morton, J. E. Bowers

Electrical Engineering

A new mode-locking technique, self-mode-locking, is described which uses the detected optical pulses from the mode-locked laser as the active driving source. This technique forms narrow-width mode-locked optical pulses at low repetition rates without the use of a microwave synthesizer

Tetracycloalkenyl-Meso-Tetraphenylporphyrins As Models For The Effect Of Non-Planarity On The Light Absorption Properties Of Photosynthetic Chromophores, Craig J. Medforth, M. Dolores Berber-Jiménez, Kevin M. Smith, John A. Shelnutt Jan 1990

Shelnutt

Liberal Studies

As the size of the cycloalkenyl ring in synthetic C5-C7 tetracycloalkenyl-meso-tetraphenylporphyrins (TCnTPP) is increased the porphyrin core changes from planar to non-planar, showing that porphyrins with well-defined degrees of ruffling can be synthesized for use in systematic studies to determine the effects of non-planarity.

Prediction Of Zinc Deficiency In Navy Beans (Phaseolus Vulgaris) By Soil And Plant Analyses, J. D. Armour, A. D. Robson, G. S.P. Ritchie Jan 1990

Prediction Of Zinc Deficiency In Navy Beans (Phaseolus Vulgaris) By Soil And Plant Analyses, J. D. Armour, A. D. Robson, G. S.P. Ritchie

Food Science and Nutrition

Navy beans (Phaseolus vulgaris cv. Gallaroy) were grown with 7 rates of zinc (Zn) in a Zn-deficient gravelly sandy loam in a glasshouse experiment. The plant shoots were harvested 31 days after sowing and the Zn concentration in each of 4 plant parts (YL, young leaf; YOL, young open leaf; YFEL, youngest fully expanded leaf; and whole shoots) was related to the fresh weight of the shoots. The critical Zn concentrations (mgtkg) in the plant parts determined by the 2 intersecting straight lines model were 21.1 for YL (r2 = 0.66), 17.1 for YOL (r2 = 0.83), …

Extractable Zinc In Particle Size Fractions Of Soils From Western Australia And Queensland, J. D. Armour, G. S.P. Ritchie, A. D. Robson Jan 1990

Extractable Zinc In Particle Size Fractions Of Soils From Western Australia And Queensland, J. D. Armour, G. S.P. Ritchie, A. D. Robson

Food Science and Nutrition

The zinc (Zn) content of particle size fractions of 12 mainly Zn deficient soils was measured by extraction with three contrasting extractants. The soils, which ranged from sands to a black earth, were from Western Australia and Queensland and particle size fractions (clay, silt, fine sand, coarse sand) were obtained by sieving and sedimentation after ultrasonification of soil suspended in deionized water. The extractants were concentrated HNO3/H2SO4/HClO4 (acid extractable or AE-Zn), DTPA and 0.002 M CaCl2. For each extractant, Zn contents of the fractions and whole soils were correlated with organic …

Zinc Adsorption By A Lateritic Soil In The Presence Of Organic Ligands, P. Chairidchai, G. S. P. Ritchie Jan 1990

Zinc Adsorption By A Lateritic Soil In The Presence Of Organic Ligands, P. Chairidchai, G. S. P. Ritchie

Food Science and Nutrition

Zinc adsorption by a lateritic podzolic soil was measured in the presence of 0 to 3 mmol/litre of acetate, oxalate, citrate, tricarballylate, salicylate, or catechol, or 0 to 3 mmolc/litre of humate. Zinc remaining in solution was measured by atomic absorption spectrometry after shaking the soil for 17 h at a soil/liquid ratio of 1:5 in a 0.003 mol/litre KCl solution containing 0 to 500 μmol/litre Zn and the ligands. In the absence of organic ligands, more than 95% of the zinc was adsorbed. The amount of adsorption was linearly correlated with pH and the concentration of ZnOH …

Canal Control Training, Charles M. Burt Jan 1990

Canal Control Training, Charles M. Burt

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

When compared to other industrial processes, irrigation processes are poorly controlled. Due to the unpredictable and uncontrollable nature of many present aspects of irrigation, a high degree of non-transferrability, or "art", is associated with irrigation. The Irrigation Training and Research Center (ITRC) at Cal Poly is dedicated to finding a retirement home for "Art". T

There is a great potential for excellent on-farm irrigation water management. Many tools (center pivots, linear moves, surge irrigation, drip, laser land grading, to name a few) exist to enable farmers to distribute water evenly across their fields. Other tools (computerized irrigation scheduling programs, automated …

Human Resource Management: A Review With Applications To Agriculture, Wayne H. Howard, Kenneth A. Mcewan Dec 1989

Human Resource Management: A Review With Applications To Agriculture, Wayne H. Howard, Kenneth A. Mcewan

Agribusiness

For years the major management concern of farm managers was farm production. In the 1970s and 1980s, the importance of finance and marketing emerged as two additional critical success factors in production agriculture. A fourth management area of growing importance to successful farming is managing labor (Thomas and Erven 1989). Total employment in farming has been steadily decreasing to less than 4% of Canada's labor force in 1984 from close to 20% in 1950 (Agriculture Canada 1984). However, the labor remaining in agriculture has been changing structure, with a greater proportion of hired labor. Hired labor accounted for 30% of …
