Biomineralization Of Ferrimagnetic Greigite (Fe3s4) And Iron Pyrite (Fes2) In A Magnetotactic Bacterium, Stephen Mann, Nicholas C.H. Sparks, Richard B. Frankel, Dennis A. Bazylinski, Holger W. Jannasch
Biomineralization Of Ferrimagnetic Greigite (Fe3s4) And Iron Pyrite (Fes2) In A Magnetotactic Bacterium, Stephen Mann, Nicholas C.H. Sparks, Richard B. Frankel, Dennis A. Bazylinski, Holger W. Jannasch
Physics
The ability of magnetotactic bacteria to orientate and navigate along geomagnetic field lines is due to the controlled intracellular deposition of the iron oxide mineral, magnetite (Fe3O4)1,2. The function and crystal chemical specificity of this mineral has been considered to be unique amongst the prokaryotes3. Moreover, the bacterial production of magnetite may represent a significant contribution to the natural remanent magnetism of sediments4,5. Here we report, the intracellular biomineralization of single crystals of the ferrimagnetic iron sulphide, greigite (Fe3S4), in a multicellular magnetotactic bacterium common in …

Ultrasonic Measurement Of The Geometric Parameters Of Gaseous Voids In Low Gravity Fluid Containers, A. T. Patten, William W. Durgin
Ultrasonic Measurement Of The Geometric Parameters Of Gaseous Voids In Low Gravity Fluid Containers, A. T. Patten, William W. Durgin
Office of the Provost Scholarship
A demonstration system for the ultrasonic gauging of fluids in low-gravity has been designed and tested. For purposes of simplification, it was assumed that vapor within a liquid container in low-gravity would form a spherical bubble which would float freely in the container. The project was designed to show that ultrasonic techniques could be used to determine the geometry of the resulting sphere given a worst-case transducer arrangement. The motivation was to simplify transducer mounting requirements so that propellant or other storage vessels could be fitted with ultrasonic gauging systems with a single or perhaps a few transducer penetrations. Data …

Iron Fertilization Of Kentucky Bluegrass, David J. Wehner, Jean E. Haley
Iron Fertilization Of Kentucky Bluegrass, David J. Wehner, Jean E. Haley
Office of the Dean (CAFES) Scholarship
Iron applications are sometimes used to enhance the color (darker green) of turfgrass stands even when iron is not deficient. A study was conducted to determine the feasibility of replacing a portion of the total yearly N applied to Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) with iron. Turfgrass response to iron chelate (Sequestrene 330) applications at 2.2 kg Fe ha-1 in combination with three liquid-applied N sources (urea, Formolene, and FLUF) at 25 kg N ha-1 was compared to turf response from applications of the N sources at 49 kg N ha-1. Iron was substituted for …

1990 El Rodeo, California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo
El Rodeo Yearbook
El Rodeo, the Cal Poly yearbook, was published annually by the Associated Students. Many of the volumes featured a theme. The collection contains volumes from 1927 to 1980. Publication was suspended between 1943-1945 (during World War II) and between 1972-1976. El Rodeo was published one last time in 1990.
Regional Adjustment Response In The U.S. Dairy Sector To Changes In Milk Support Price, Alfons Weersink, Wayne H. Howard
Regional Adjustment Response In The U.S. Dairy Sector To Changes In Milk Support Price, Alfons Weersink, Wayne H. Howard
Agribusiness
Milk production supply response at the regional level for the U.S. dairy sector is estimated through the use of dynamic dual models. Adjustment rates and elasticity measures are presented, and then the estimated parameter coefficients are used to stimulate shifts in production resulting from price changes. A drop in milk price designed to realign market conditions is projected to be borne largely by the Corn Belt and, to a lesser extent, the western states.
