Minimax-Optimal Stop Rules And Distributions In Secretary Problems, Theodore P. Hill, Ulrich Krengel
Minimax-Optimal Stop Rules And Distributions In Secretary Problems, Theodore P. Hill, Ulrich Krengel
Research Scholars in Residence
For the secretary (or best-choice) problem with an unknown number N of objects, minimax-optimal stop rules and (worst-case) distributions are derived, under the assumption that $N$ is a random variable with unknown distribution, but known upper bound n. Asymptotically, the probability of selecting the best object in this situation is of order of (log n)-1. For example, even if the only information available is that there are somewhere between 1 and 100 objects, there is still a strategy which will select the best item about one time in five.
In-Situ Film Thickness Measurements For Real-Time Monitoring And Control Of Advanced Photoresist Track Coating Systems, Richard N. Savage, Thomas E. Metz, Horace O. Simmons
In-Situ Film Thickness Measurements For Real-Time Monitoring And Control Of Advanced Photoresist Track Coating Systems, Richard N. Savage, Thomas E. Metz, Horace O. Simmons
Materials Engineering
This paper explores the methodologies of real-time measurement of photoresist film thickness on silicon wafers using multi-wavelength reflection interferometry. Reflected light from the wafer's surface, containing the interference profile, is collected in-situ via a fiber optic cable and film thickness is determined in real-time via a pattern recognition algorithm. The instrumentation used to make this measurement and its application toward optimizing track performance during spin-coating and back are discussed. Data demonstrating basic thickness versus spin-time and thickness versus bake-time profiles acquired on-line without process disruption are presented along with its utilization toward minimizing process set-up and machine qualification. Moreover, the …
The Production Data-Based Similarity Coefficient Versus Jaccard's Similarity Coefficient, Hamid Seifoddini, Manocher Djassemi
The Production Data-Based Similarity Coefficient Versus Jaccard's Similarity Coefficient, Hamid Seifoddini, Manocher Djassemi
Industrial Technology and Packaging
This paper compares the performance of Jaccard's similarity coefficient with the production data-based similarity coefficient. A number of machine-component charts taken from the literature or randomly generated are used to form machine-component groups. Then, the sum of intercellular and intracellular material handling costs for each machine-component group is calculated and used as a basis for performance evaluation of the two similarity coefficients.

Electronic Properties Of Monocapped Prismane And Basket Iron-Sulphur Clusters, B. S. Snyder, M. S. Reynolds, R. H. Holm, G. C. Papaefthymiou, R. B. Frankel
Electronic Properties Of Monocapped Prismane And Basket Iron-Sulphur Clusters, B. S. Snyder, M. S. Reynolds, R. H. Holm, G. C. Papaefthymiou, R. B. Frankel
Physics
The ground state electronic properties of the mixed-valence clusters Fe7S6 (PEt3)4Cl3 (1), Fe6S6(PEt3)4L2 [L = Cl− (2), Br− (4), I− (5) and PhS− (6)], Fe6Se6 (PEt3)4Cl2 (3) and [Fe6S6(PEt)6]1− (9), have been investigated by magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and Mössbauer spectroscopic measurements. Cluster 1 has a (idealized C3v) monocapped prismane structure and clusters 2–6 and 9 adopt the C2v “basket” configuration based on the [Fe6 …
Magnetic Fine Particles In Biological Systems, Dominic P.E. Dickson, Richard B. Frankel
Magnetic Fine Particles In Biological Systems, Dominic P.E. Dickson, Richard B. Frankel
Physics
Two examples of biological magnetic fine particles are considered: iron-storage proteins and magnetotactic bacteria. These cover many aspects of this field, including the use of well-defined biological systems for testing theoretical models, using magnetic properties to distinguish between different biological materials, producing magnetic materials by biological processes, and using optimised biological magnetic systems as a guide to the production of synthetic magnetic materials.

In-Line Photoresist Thickness Monitor, Richard N. Savage, Tom W. Batchelder, Kenneth M. Sautter, Gary H. Memovich
Materials Engineering
An in-line photoresist thickness measuring device wherein a plurality of projection optical fibers are disposed over a wafer processing track for illuminating portions of a wafer as the wafer proceeds along the track. The light scattered back from each illuminated portion is detected by a corresponding plurality of pickup optical fibers and communicated to an optical fiber multiplexer. The multiplexer sequentially selects the optical signal from each pickup optical fiber and communicates the light from the selected pickup optical fiber to a spectrometer. The spectrometer simultaneously diffuses the scattered light into a plurality of light bands, each light band having …

Optimal Stopping Problems With Generalized Objective Functions, Theodore P. Hill, Doug P. Kennedy
Optimal Stopping Problems With Generalized Objective Functions, Theodore P. Hill, Doug P. Kennedy
Research Scholars in Residence
Optimal stopping of a sequence of random variables is studied, with emphasis on generalized objectives which may be non-monotone functions of EXt, where t is a stopping time, or may even depend on the entire vector (E[X1I{t=1}],⋯, E[XnI{t=n}]), such as the minimax objective to maximize minj{E[XjI{t=j}]}. Convexity is used to establish a prophet inequality and universal bounds for the optimal return, and a method for constructing optimal stopping times for such objectives is given.
