Phosphorus Retention And Release From Sandy Soils Of The Peel-Harvey Catchment, G. S.P. Ritchie, D. M. Weaver Jan 1993

Phosphorus Retention And Release From Sandy Soils Of The Peel-Harvey Catchment, G. S.P. Ritchie, D. M. Weaver

Food Science and Nutrition

In order to manage phosphorus (P) losses from soils to waterbodies, knowledge of the mechanisms through which P is retained or released from the soil is essential. Sandy soils of the Peel-Harvey catchment (Western Australia) were subjected to a range of environmental and management factors in the laboratory and field in order to gain an understanding of the mechanisms that affect the magnitude of P losses. Sandy soils accumulated P, despite having little sorption capacity, and this accumulation could be monitored by measuring an acid-extractable fraction. The potential, short-term P loss could be estimated by determination of water-soluble soil solution …

Al Toxicity Of Wheat Grown In Acidic Subsoils In Relation To Soil Solution Properties And Exchangeable Cations, S. J. Carr, G. S.P. Ritchie Jan 1993

Al Toxicity Of Wheat Grown In Acidic Subsoils In Relation To Soil Solution Properties And Exchangeable Cations, S. J. Carr, G. S.P. Ritchie

Food Science and Nutrition

Toxic concentrations of soluble A1 in the subsoil decrease the yield of wheat grown on many yellow earths in the eastern wheatbelt of Western Australia. In our previous research (Carr et al. 1991), we observed variable plant response to high concentrations of soluble Al in subsoils of yellow earths in different regions of the wheatbelt. Environmental conditions (e.g. water supply) and/or an unidentified soil mitigating factor may have contributed to the variable plant response to soluble Al in some of the regions studied.
We collected ten soils from four regions of the eastern wheatbelt of Western Australia. In a glasshouse …

The Long-Term Fate Of Copper Fertilizer Applied To A Lateritic Sandy Soil In Western Australia, R. G. Mclaren, G. S.P. Ritchie Jan 1993

The Long-Term Fate Of Copper Fertilizer Applied To A Lateritic Sandy Soil In Western Australia, R. G. Mclaren, G. S.P. Ritchie

Food Science and Nutrition

A soil copper fractionation was carried out on soils sampled from plots in a long-term copper fertilizer trial on a lateritic sandy soil in Western Australia. At copper application rates up to 8.25 kg copper sulphate ha-1, a high proportion of the applied copper was initially associated with the soil organic matter. During the course of the trial (20 years), a substantial proportion of this copper became redistributed to a residual soil fraction, i.e. the residue remaining after extractions to remove organic matter and iron oxides. However, significant redistribution of copper with time was not detected in plots …

Mathematics

We explore the elementary operator theory of the equation
(0.1) ∑ cm,nT*nTm=0
for cm,n E C, cm,n nonzero for only finitely many m, n and Ta bounded linear transformation on a complex Hilbert space in Chapters 1 and 2. We explore the equation

(0.2) T*2T - T*T2 + T - T* = 0
in greater depth in Chapters 4 and 5.

Chapter 1 explores the algebraic and C*-algebraic aspects of the equation (0.1) and both the spectral picture of and growth conditions on …

Multiple Bids As A Consequence Of Target Management Resistance: A Count Data Approach, Sanjiv Jaggia, Satish Thosar Jan 1993

Multiple Bids As A Consequence Of Target Management Resistance: A Count Data Approach, Sanjiv Jaggia, Satish Thosar

Economics

In this article, we focus on the question of target management resistance and the incidence of subsequent bids. A Poisson count data model is used where the dependent variable represents the number of bids (count) received and the independent variables comprise target management actions and firm specific characteristics. Of the target management actions considered, legal defense and the entry of a white knight are associated with additional bids. With respect to firm specific characteristics, we find that a high initial bid premium deters subsequent bids. Firm size is also significant and has an interesting relationship with the number of bids …

Initiating The Development Of An Integrated Waste Management Curriculum, W. David Conn

City and Regional Planning

The National Recycling Coalition, in recognition of significant changes in the field of solid waste management and the resulting need for people with new knowledge and skills, has assembled a committee to develop an “integrated waste management curriculum.” This paper identifies and discusses several possible objectives for such a curriculum, and explores issues associated with different ways in which it might be initiated.

Soziale Ungleichheit Und Gesellschaftliche Integration. Ein Vergleich Von Usa, Japan Und Deutschland, Brigitte Hamm, Dieter Hotlmann, Harold R. Kerbo, Hermann Strasser Jan 1993

Soziale Ungleichheit Und Gesellschaftliche Integration. Ein Vergleich Von Usa, Japan Und Deutschland, Brigitte Hamm, Dieter Hotlmann, Harold R. Kerbo, Hermann Strasser

Social Sciences

H+/Oh- Excretion And Nutrient Uptake In Upper And Lower Parts Of Lupin (Lupinus Angustifolius L.) Root Systems, S. P. Loss, A. D. Robson, G. S.P. Ritchie Jan 1993

H+/Oh- Excretion And Nutrient Uptake In Upper And Lower Parts Of Lupin (Lupinus Angustifolius L.) Root Systems, S. P. Loss, A. D. Robson, G. S.P. Ritchie

Food Science and Nutrition

The cultivation of narrow-leafed lupins (Lupinus angustifolius L.) increase rates of subsoil acidification, and this is thought to be partly related to their pattern of nutrient uptake and H+/OH- excretion. The main hypothesis of this study was that H+ and OH- excretion is not distributed evenly over the entire length of the root system but is limited to zones where excess cation or anion uptake occur. Seedlings of nodulated lupins were grown in solution culture using vertically split pots that allowed the upper and lower zones of the root system to be supplied with …

Partitioning Inequalities In Probability And Statistics, Theodore P. Hill

Research Scholars in Residence

This article surveys fair-division or cake-cutting inequalities in probability statistics, including bisection inequalities, basic fairness inequalities, convexity tools, superfairness inequalities, and partitioning inequalities hypotheses testing and optimal stopping theory. The emphasis is measure theoretic, as opposed to game theoretic or economic, and a number of open problems in the area are mentioned.

Orbifolds Of Maximal Diameter, Joseph Borzellino Jan 1993

Orbifolds Of Maximal Diameter, Joseph Borzellino

Mathematics

In this paper the Maximal Diameter Theorem of Riemannian geometry is proven for Riemannian orbifolds. In particular, it is shown that a complete Riemannian orbifold with Ricci curvature bounded below by (n−1) and diameter = π, must have constant sectional curvature 1, and must be a quotient of the sphere (Sn, can) of constant sectional curvature 1 by a subgroup of the orthogonal group O(n+1) acting discontinuously and isometrically on Sn. It is also shown that the singular locus of the orbifold forms a geometric barrier to the length minimization property of geodesics. We also extend the Bishop relative volume …

Life History And Description Of Immature Stages Of Aciurina Thoracica (Diptera: Tephritidae) On Baccharis Sarothroides In Southern California, David H. Headrick, Richard D. Goeden Jan 1993

Life History And Description Of Immature Stages Of Aciurina Thoracica (Diptera: Tephritidae) On Baccharis Sarothroides In Southern California, David H. Headrick, Richard D. Goeden

Horticulture and Crop Science

Aciurina thoracica Curran forms galls on branches of at least three species of Baccharis in southern California. The egg, second and third instars, and puparium obtained from B. sarothroides Gray are described and illustrated. Aciurina thoracica's median oral lobe is described and illustrated. The egg is inserted singly into branch tips of B. sarothroides in early spring. Gall and larval growth continue through summer and fall, and pupariation occurs in early winter. Adults emerge in late winter or early spring, mate, and oviposit into newly forming branch tips. Adult behavior including courtship and copulation is described and compared with other …

Nanosecond Transient Electroluminescene From Polymer Light-Emitting Diodes, David Braun, D. Moses, C. Zhang, A. J. Heeger Dec 1992

Nanosecond Transient Electroluminescene From Polymer Light-Emitting Diodes, David Braun, D. Moses, C. Zhang, A. J. Heeger

Electrical Engineering

The transient electroluminescence from polymer light-emitting diodes is reported. When the devices are mounted on a microstrip transmission line, the temporal response is limited by the electrode geometry, with rise and fall times below 50 ns. With low duty-cycle pulses (0.5%) the electroluminescence intensity remains proportional to the current at values up to 10 A/cm2, two orders of magnitude greater than possible under direct current operation. Since the spectral blue-shift observed at high current levels (with power dissipation above 1 W/cm2) indicates significant sample heating, still higher levels should be possible with proper thermal management.
