Induction Of Larval Settlement By Kcl In Three Species Of Bugula (Bryozoa), Dean E. Wendt, Robert M. Woollacott

Biological Sciences

Elevation of the K+ concentration in seawater (added as KCl) induces larval settlement and metamorphosis in Bugula simplex, B. stolonifera, and B. turrita. All three of these bryozoan species have similar bell-shaped dose-response curves: 5 mM excess K+ is sufficient to increase settlement and metamorphosis significantly over seawater controls in all the species and optimal responses to excess K concentrations occur ations at 10-25 mM, 5-10 mM, and 10-15 mM for B. simplex, B. stolonifera, and B. turrita, respectively. Percent settlement in all three species is decreased at levels greater than 25 mniM excess …

Behaviors Of Female Eretmocerus Sp. Nr. Californicus (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) Attacking Bemisia Argentifolii (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) On Sweet Potato, David H. Headrick, Thomas S. Bellows, Jr., Thomas M. Perring

Horticulture and Crop Science

Behaviors of Eretmocerus sp. nr. californicus Howard females on Bemisia argentifolii Bellows & Perring infesting sweet potato, Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lain, were described and quantified. Walking speeds of up to 1.3 mm/s were calculated for females searching for host whitefly nymphs on sweet potato leaves. Females encountered all host stages during searching with approximately the same relative frequency as their relative abundance (average of 17.03% of hosts available were encountered). Females also arrested and antennated all of the host stages with the same relative frequency as their encounter rate (62.8%). Females showed a clear and significant preference for probing second …

Structure And Function Of Magnetosomes In Magnetotactic Bateria, Richard B. Frankel, Dennis A. Bazylinski Jan 1995

Structure And Function Of Magnetosomes In Magnetotactic Bateria, Richard B. Frankel, Dennis A. Bazylinski

Physics

Magnetotactic bacteria contain magnetosomes, which are mineral particles enclosed my membranes. The particles are ferrimagnetic magnetite, ferrimagnetic greigite, or greigite and non-magnetic pyrite. The particles constitute an elegant biomagnetic compass that orients the cell along the geomagnetic field lines as it swims. This paper discusses the structures of these particles and their possible formation mechanisms.

Merits Of The Production Volume Based Similarity Coefficient In Machine Cell Formation, Hamid Seifoddini, Manocher Djassemi Jan 1995

Merits Of The Production Volume Based Similarity Coefficient In Machine Cell Formation, Hamid Seifoddini, Manocher Djassemi

Industrial Technology and Packaging

In this paper, two types of similarity coefficients are compared: (1) the Jaccard's coefficient and (2) the production volume based coefficient. Each is used to form a cellular manufacturing system whose performance will be used as a measure of effectiveness of the similarity coefficient. The sum of intercellular and intracellular material handling costs is used as a criterion for performance evaluation.

Life History And Description Of Immature Stages Of Euaresta Stigmatica (Diptera: Tephritidae) On Ambrosia Spp. (Asteraceae) In Southern California, David H. Headrick, Richard D. Goeden, Jeffrey A. Teerink

Horticulture and Crop Science

Euaresta stigmatica Coquillett is bivoltine and nearly monophagous on four native ragweeds, Ambrosia spp. (Asteraceae), in the southwestern United States. In southern California, larvae of the spring (F1) generation develop singly in and feed on one or both ovules of young fruiting involucres of Ambrosia ilicifolia (Gray) Payne, with a small proportion infesting the staminate involucres. Adults emerge after ≈1 mo, with their reproductive organs immature. The F2 generation develops in the involucres of fall-blooming Ambrosia acanthicarpa Hooker. The egg is described and illustrated for the first time for any species of Euaresta. First, second, and …

Creating Vertical Strategic Alliances: Theory And Cases From Canada's Agri-Food Sector, Erna Van Duren, Wayne H. Howard, Helen Mckay Dec 1994

Creating Vertical Strategic Alliances: Theory And Cases From Canada's Agri-Food Sector, Erna Van Duren, Wayne H. Howard, Helen Mckay

Agribusiness

Participants in Canada's agri0food sector have been averse to vertical collaboration for too long. The sector's history of producer marketing boards that were concerned with obtaining bargaining power to redress the market power of buyers has created attitudes the market power of buyers has created attitudes towards buyers and sellers that increase the risk that agri-food organizations will underestimate the advantages of vertical strategic alliances and overestimate the difficulty of building such relationships. However, in spite of the prevailing attitude among participants in Canada's agri-food sector, many organizations have nurtured vertical alliances. This paper develops a framework for understanding how …

Computer Simplification Of Engineering Systems Formulas, J. W. Helton, Mark Stankus, John Wavrik Dec 1994

Computer Simplification Of Engineering Systems Formulas, J. W. Helton, Mark Stankus, John Wavrik

Mathematics

Currently, the three most popular commercial computer algebra systems are Mathematica, Maple, and MACSYMA (the 3 M’s). These systems provide a wide variety of symbolic computation facilities for commutative algebra and contain implementations of powerful algorithms in that domain. The Gröbner Basis Algorithm, for example, is an important tool used in computation with commutative algebras and in solving systems of polynomial equations.

On the other hand, most of the computation involved in linear control theory is performed on matrices and these do not commute. A typical issue of IEEE TAC is full of A B C D type linear systems …

Travelling Wave Electrode Optimization For High Speed Electro-Optic Modulators Using The Fourier Series Method, W. Boyu, X. Guangjun, Xiaomin Jin Dec 1994

Travelling Wave Electrode Optimization For High Speed Electro-Optic Modulators Using The Fourier Series Method, W. Boyu, X. Guangjun, Xiaomin Jin

Electrical Engineering

The performance of Z-cut Mach-Zehnder high speed LiNbO3 amplitude modulators with a CPW traveling wave electrode, has been analyzed and optimally designed in detail by the Fourier series method. The effect of electrode and buffer layer thickness on the electric field distribution in the substract, effective micro- wave refractive index and characteristic impedance of CPW electrode, are discussed. Calculation shows that increasing the thickness of the electrode and SiO2 buffer layer can improve the phase velocity mismatch between electric and optical waves, and the drive power required by the modulator with thin buffer layer and thick electrode is …

Isolation Of Three Hexahydro-1,3,5-Trinitro-1,3,5-Triazine- Degrading Species Of The Family Enterobacteriaceae From Nitramine Explosive-Contaminated Soil, Christopher Kitts, Daryl P. Cunningham, Pat J. Unkefer Dec 1994

Isolation Of Three Hexahydro-1,3,5-Trinitro-1,3,5-Triazine- Degrading Species Of The Family Enterobacteriaceae From Nitramine Explosive-Contaminated Soil, Christopher Kitts, Daryl P. Cunningham, Pat J. Unkefer

Biological Sciences

Three species of the family Enterobacteriaceae that biochemically reduced hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) and octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX) were isolated from nitramine explosive-contaminated soil. Two isolates, identified as Morganella morganii and Providencia rettgeri, completely transformed both RDX and the nitroso-RDX reduction intermediates. The third isolate, identified as Citrobacter freundii, partially transformed RDX and generated high concentrations of nitroso-RDX intermediates. All three isolates produced 14CO2 from labeled RDX under O2-depleted culture conditions. While all three isolates transformed HMX, only M. morganii transformed HMX in the presence of RDX.
