Japanese Companies In Germany: A Case Study In Cross-Cultural Management, James R. Lincoln, Harold R. Kerbo, Elke Wittenhagen Jul 1995

Japanese Companies In Germany: A Case Study In Cross-Cultural Management, James R. Lincoln, Harold R. Kerbo, Elke Wittenhagen

Social Sciences

From a series of qualitative interviews with Japanese managers and German managers and workers in thirty-one Japanese-owned companies in the Düsseldorf region of western Germany, this article discusses differences in cultural patterns and organizational styles between the German and Japanese employees and the problems these pose for communication, cooperation, and morale. First, we deal with cultural contrasts: language issues, interpersonal styles (personability and politeness), and norms regarding the taking of responsibility. Second, we examine the impact on cross-nationality relations of established organizational practice: for example, German specialism vs. Japanese generalism; direct and vertical vs. indirect and incremental decision making. We …

The Influence Of Special District Government On Public Spending And Debt, Michael L. Marlow Jul 1995

The Influence Of Special District Government On Public Spending And Debt, Michael L. Marlow

Economics

Growth in special district governments is examined as a reason behind public sector expansion in the United States. A theoretical model is developed of the optimal mix of government suppliers which predicts how special district governments affect the overall provision of government policies. The hypothesis that expansion of special district governments leads to expansion of the public sector is expirically examined over two time periods.

A Sensitivity Analysis Of Retailer Shelf Management Models, Norm A. Borin, Paul Farris Jul 1995

A Sensitivity Analysis Of Retailer Shelf Management Models, Norm A. Borin, Paul Farris

Marketing

A shelf management model was developed to assist retailers with the decision of which products to stock and how much space to allocate to those products. Due to the non-linearities in the formulation a closed form solution is not possible. Borin, et al. develop a search heuristic based on simulated annealing and compare the solution against a known optimum. A barrier to the use of such models is the fact that managers typically do not have access to error-free estimates of the parameters required for the model construction (shelf elasticities, search loyalty, and consumer preferences). In this article we analyze …

Circulation Measurements About A Rapidly Pitching Airfoil Using An Ultrasonic System, F. J. Weber, Jr., William W. Durgin, H. Johari Jun 1995

Circulation Measurements About A Rapidly Pitching Airfoil Using An Ultrasonic System, F. J. Weber, Jr., William W. Durgin, H. Johari

Office of the Provost Scholarship

An ultrasonic system was developed to measure the circulation about a sinusoidally pitching NACA 4418 airfoil. The system consisted of two opposing ultrasonic ranging modules arranged such that the differences between the sound propagation times in opposite directions could be related to the instantaneous circulation. For the stationary airfoil, the measured lift coefficient was within 5% of the tabulated data while the observed stall angle was 2° less than the tabulated value. Measured hysteresis loops verified the applicability of the ultrasonic system to the dynamic stall problem. Measured maximum lift coefficients increased linearly with reduced frequency up to a value …

Development Of A Graduate Integrated Waste Management Course Using The Case Study Approach, Samuel A. Vigil Jun 1995

Development Of A Graduate Integrated Waste Management Course Using The Case Study Approach, Samuel A. Vigil

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Solid waste management is an integral part of the environmental engineering profession. At California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), solid waste management is taught as a required course in an undergraduate environmental engineering curriculum. The undergraduate course is described in Reference 1. This paper discusses the development of a graduate level integrated waste management course entitled "Resource and Energy Recovery from Waste", which uses a case study approach. The course focuses on resource and energy recovery technologies including composting, unit operations of resource recovery, recycling, and thermal waste conversion including combustion and gasification. The bioconversion of wastes in landfills and …
