Identification And Quantification Of Efficiency And Uniformity Components, Charles M. Burt, Albert J. Clemmens, Kenneth H. Solomon Aug 1995

Identification And Quantification Of Efficiency And Uniformity Components, Charles M. Burt, Albert J. Clemmens, Kenneth H. Solomon

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

Proper usage of irrigation performance indicators such as uniformity and efficiency require standardized definitions and equations, specification of vertical and horizontal boundaries, inclusion of all pertinent components, and accurate measurement and estimation of those components. The quantification of some critical components is a challenge, and errors always exist.

Biquad Gm-C Structures Which Use Double-Output Transconductors, Vladimir I. Prodanov, Michael M. Green Aug 1995

Biquad Gm-C Structures Which Use Double-Output Transconductors, Vladimir I. Prodanov, Michael M. Green

Electrical Engineering

Two Gm-C biquad structures are derived. They use only two grounded capacitors and three transconductors, two of which have double-outputs. The realization of the double-output transconductors is discussed. It is shown that only two additional transistors are needed to convert a single-output transconductor to a double-output one suitable for implementation of the proposed structures. HSPICE simulations and experimental results of a 5-th order inverse Gaussian filter using the proposed biquad structures are given.

Design Of A Structured Light Sensor For In Situ Calibration, Fred W. Depiero, Reid L. Kress Aug 1995

Design Of A Structured Light Sensor For In Situ Calibration, Fred W. Depiero, Reid L. Kress

Electrical Engineering

This paper highlights a ranging sensor that can be calibrated at standoffs of 1 to 3 feet with a depth of field of ≈ 1 ft. Tests at a 16" standoff have produced a 0.004 inch standard deviation in height measurement errors. The data density and field of view are programmable. The sensor is positioned robotically, allowing it to provide accurate, short-range measurements prior to manipulation tasks. The sensor head is relatively inexpensive (≈ $10k) and is designed for in situ calibration. This approach is intended to allow replacement components to be installed, calibrated, and validated without decontamination. Calibration, validation …

Fertigation - The Next Frontier, Charles M. Burt Aug 1995

Fertigation - The Next Frontier, Charles M. Burt

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

Just as irrigation dealers presently should specify pressure relief valves and air vents on all pipelined irrigation systems, future irrigation designs will incorporate a new generation of FERTIGATION (fertilization through the irrigation system) hardware. And farmers will use sophisticated techniques to monitor plant nutrient status and to determine the proper level of nutrients to spoon feed through fertigation.

Via-Rad: A Blackboard-Based System For Diagnostic Radiology, Erika Rogers Aug 1995

Via-Rad: A Blackboard-Based System For Diagnostic Radiology, Erika Rogers

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The work described in this article presents an approach to the integration of computer displayed radiological images with cooperative computerized assistance for decision-making. The VIA-RAD system (Visual Interaction Assistant for Radiology) is a blackboard-based architecture, founded on extensive data collection and analysis in the domain of diagnostic radiology, together with cognitive modeling of the interaction between perception and problem-solving. The details of this system are presented in terms of domain knowledge representation and domain knowledge mapping. A small prototype of the system has been implemented and tested with radiology subjects, and the results of this study are also described.

Growth, Trade, And International Transfers, Eric O'N. Fisher Aug 1995

Growth, Trade, And International Transfers, Eric O'N. Fisher

Economics

This paper analyzes the simplest neoclassical economy in which agents have finite lives and there is sustained per capita growth. The growth rate of the world economy depends upon countries’ savings propensities and common technology. Trade can reverse an economy’s autarkic growth trajectory, and a country with a high savings rate runs a current account surplus. If a surplus country expands aggregate demand while a deficit country contracts analogously, world growth increases. An appropriate international policy can change the path of the world economy from stagnation to growth.

A New Way Of Thinking About The Current Account, Eric O'N. Fisher Aug 1995

A New Way Of Thinking About The Current Account, Eric O'N. Fisher

Economics

Extending the theory of generational accounts, I show that the conventional current account is not related to the real effects of a country's fiscal policy. For any international array of fiscal policies, a country can implement its own policy so that the conventional government and current account deficits are zero in every period. I argue that economists should develop a new measure of the current account. This measure is forward looking and keeps track of expected transfers between countries.

Lead Distribution In A Simulated Aquatic Environment: Effects Of Bacterial Biofilms And Iron Oxide, Yarrow M. Nelson, Waihung Lo, Leonard W. Lion, Michael L. Shuler, William C. Ghiorse Aug 1995

Lead Distribution In A Simulated Aquatic Environment: Effects Of Bacterial Biofilms And Iron Oxide, Yarrow M. Nelson, Waihung Lo, Leonard W. Lion, Michael L. Shuler, William C. Ghiorse

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Biofilms influence the transport and fate of heavy metals in aquatic environments both directly by adsorption and complexation reactions and indirectly via interactions with oxides of iron and manganese. These reactions were investigated by introducing lead into a continuous-flow biofilm reactor that was designed to simulate conditions in a flowing freshwater aquatic environment. The reactor provided controlled conditions, and use of a chemically-defined growth medium allowed calculation of lead speciation with a chemical equilibrium program (MINEQL). Pseudomonas cepacia was employed as a test cell strain because of its ability to grow and form biofilms in the defined medium. This bacterium …

Spider (Araneae) Species Composition And Seasonal Abundance In San Joaquin Valley Grape Vineyards, Michael J. Costello, Kent M. Daane Aug 1995

Spider (Araneae) Species Composition And Seasonal Abundance In San Joaquin Valley Grape Vineyards, Michael J. Costello, Kent M. Daane

Horticulture and Crop Science

As part of an investigation to estimate the effect of resident spider populations on Erythroneura variabilis Beamer, spider species composition, relative abundance, and seasonal occurrence were determined. Spiders were sampled monthly during the 1992 and 1993 growing seasons; their numbers were pooled and analyzed for species diversity using the Renkonen index of similarity and cluster analysis. Twenty-seven species of spiders were recorded, representing 14 families. The most common species were Cheiracanthium inclusum (Hentz), Trachelas pacificus (Chamberlin and Ivie), Theridion dilutum Levi, Theridion melanurum Hahn, Oxyopes scalaris Hentz, Oxyopes salticus Hentz, Hololena nedra Chamberlin and Ivie, and Metaphidippus vitis (Cockerell). Three …

Csumb: Military Base Conversion As An Opportunity For Sustainable Design, Margot Mcdonald, Polly Cooper, Ken Haggard Jul 1995

Csumb: Military Base Conversion As An Opportunity For Sustainable Design, Margot Mcdonald, Polly Cooper, Ken Haggard

Architecture

The conversion of military bases around the country creates an imperative to infuse social, economic, and environmental vitality back into the affected region. Fort Ord in Monterey County, a recent casualty of base closures, is being turned into an opportunity for adaptive reuse as it undergoes the transformation from an army base to a magnet campus for the California State University (CSU) system. The CSU Monterey Bay (CSUMB) campus visionaries included sustainability as a priority in the base conversion. To achieve this goal, the university hired a team of sustainable design consultants. This paper reports on the outcomes of the …
