Preparation Of Gold-Coated Molybdenum Articles And Articles Prepared Thereby, Timothy S. Romano, Tom K. Evans, Gary B. Hughes, Karl H. Neumann May 1998

Preparation Of Gold-Coated Molybdenum Articles And Articles Prepared Thereby, Timothy S. Romano, Tom K. Evans, Gary B. Hughes, Karl H. Neumann

Statistics

A gold-coated molybdenum article (30) is made by furnishing a substrate (32) made of pure molybdenum or an alloy of molybdenum, and preparing a slurry of gold powder, acrylic binder, and acetone liquid carrier. The slurry is applied to a portion of a surface of the substrate. The substrate with applied slurry is heated in vacuum or inert atmosphere to an elevated temperature, preferably about 2040.degree. F., and thereafter cooled to ambient temperature. The result is an article (30) having at least a portion of the substrate (32) covered with an adherent gold coating (34).

Reaction Sequence Of Iron Sulfide Minerals In Bacteria And Their Use As Biomarkers, Mihály Pósfai, Peter R. Buseck, D. A. Bazylinski, Richard B. Frankel May 1998

Reaction Sequence Of Iron Sulfide Minerals In Bacteria And Their Use As Biomarkers, Mihály Pósfai, Peter R. Buseck, D. A. Bazylinski, Richard B. Frankel

Physics

Some bacteria form intracellular nanometer-scale crystals of greigite (Fe3S4) that cause the bacteria to be oriented in magnetic fields. Transmission electron microscope observations showed that ferrimagnetic greigite in these bacteria forms from nonmagnetic mackinawite (tetragonal FeS) and possibly from cubic FeS. These precursors apparently transform into greigite by rearrangement of iron atoms over a period of days to weeks. Neither pyrrhotite nor pyrite was found. These results have implications for the interpretation of the presence of pyrrhotite and greigite in the martian meteorite ALH84001.

Electroluminescent Device Having Electroluminescent Compound And Liquid Crystalline Compound, Rifat A.M. Hikmet, David Braun, Aemilianus G.J. Staring, Hermanmus F.M. Schoo, Johan Lub May 1998

Electroluminescent Device Having Electroluminescent Compound And Liquid Crystalline Compound, Rifat A.M. Hikmet, David Braun, Aemilianus G.J. Staring, Hermanmus F.M. Schoo, Johan Lub

Electrical Engineering

A description is given of an electroluminescent device (1) having an LED structure, which is composed of an active layer (7) of oriented liquid-crystalline and electroluminescent compounds and a transparent positive electrode layer (5) which is preferably made from an electroconductive polymer. By previously rubbing the electrode layer (5) in one direction with a velvet cloth, an orientation is induced in the molecules in the active layer (7), the orientation being frozen by cooling or polymerization. The electroluminescent device (1) emits polarized light whose direction of polarization is parallel to the direction of rubbing.

The Effects Of Beryllium Additions On The Oxidation Of Nickel Aluminide And Titanium Aluminide Based Intermetallics, R. H. Hanrahan Jr., Katherine C. Chen, M. P. Brady May 1998

The Effects Of Beryllium Additions On The Oxidation Of Nickel Aluminide And Titanium Aluminide Based Intermetallics, R. H. Hanrahan Jr., Katherine C. Chen, M. P. Brady

Materials Engineering

The effects of Be additions on the oxidation behavior of β-NiAl in moist air at 1000°C and borderline alumina-forming y (TiAI) + Laves Ti-Al-Cr based alloys at 800°C and 1000°C in dry and moist air were investigated. The addition of Be to β-NiAl suppressed the formation of transient alumina, and resulted in the formation of a protective BeAl2O4 spinel phase. In dry air, the addition of Be to the Ti-AI-Cr alloys also resulted in the formation of a protective BeAl2O4 spinel phase. In moist air, only Ti-AlCr- Be alloys with a high Cr content …

Invasion Genetics Of The Mediterranean Fruit Fly: Variation In Multiple Nuclear Introns, F. X. Villablanca, G. K. Roderick, S. R. Palumbi May 1998

Invasion Genetics Of The Mediterranean Fruit Fly: Variation In Multiple Nuclear Introns, F. X. Villablanca, G. K. Roderick, S. R. Palumbi

Biological Sciences

Biological invasions generally start from low initial population sizes, leading to reduced genetic variation in nuclear and especially mitochondrial DNA. Consequently, genetic approaches for the study of invasion history and population structure are difficult. An extreme example is the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Medfly), for which successive invasions during this century have resulted in a loss of 60% of ancestral genetic variation in isozymes and 75% of variation in mitochondrial DNA. Using Medflies as an example, we present a new approach to invasion genetics that measures DNA sequence variation within introns from multiple nuclear loci. These loci are so …

On Farm Irrigation - The Shift From Art To Science, Charles M. Burt May 1998

On Farm Irrigation - The Shift From Art To Science, Charles M. Burt

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

Excellent on-farm irrigation management and design have traditionally been promoted for reasons of improved yields and farm input costs. More recently, external pressures require even more detail to on-farm irrigation. These external pressures include competition for water by urban and environmental interests, plus degradation of aquifers and rivers. As irrigation progresses from an art to a science, new concepts must be adopted. Key points made in the paper relate to flexible water deliveries to farms, improved fertigation practices, the importance of on-farm irrigation evaluations, the use of an Irrigation Consumer Bill of Rights by dealers and farmers, and irrigation system …
