Type I Nitroreductases In Soil Enterobacteria Reduce Tnt (2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene) And Rdx (Hexahydro-1,3,5-Trinitro-1,3,5-Triazine), Christopher Kitts, Chad E. Green, Rebecca A. Otley, Marc A. Alvarez, Pat J. Unkefer
Type I Nitroreductases In Soil Enterobacteria Reduce Tnt (2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene) And Rdx (Hexahydro-1,3,5-Trinitro-1,3,5-Triazine), Christopher Kitts, Chad E. Green, Rebecca A. Otley, Marc A. Alvarez, Pat J. Unkefer
Biological Sciences
Many enteric bacteria express a type I oxygen-insensitive nitroreductase, which reduces nitro groups on many different nitroaromatic compounds under aerobic conditions. Enzymatic reduction of nitramines was also documented in enteric bacteria under anaerobic conditions. This study indicates that nitramine reduction in enteric bacteria is carried out by the type I, or oxygen-insensitive nitroreductase, rather than a type II enzyme. The enteric bacterium Morganella morganii strain B2 with documented hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) nitroreductase activity, and Enterobacter cloacae strain 96-3 with documented 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) nitroreductase activity, were used here to show that the explosives TNT and RDX were both reduced by a type …
Optical Discrimination Of A Phytoplankton Species In Natural Mixed Populations, David F. Millie, Mark A. Moline, Oscar Schofield
Optical Discrimination Of A Phytoplankton Species In Natural Mixed Populations, David F. Millie, Mark A. Moline, Oscar Schofield
Biological Sciences
Developing optical detection techniques for discriminating particular phytoplankon species in mixed assemblages has long been a goal of aquatic scientists. Previously, a processing algorithm for phytoplankton absorption spectra was reported that suggested detection of the red tide dinoflagellate Gymnodinium breve was possible. The algorithm evaluated the fourth derivative of the particulate absorption spectrum of an unknown sample and compared it to a standard fourth derivative spectrum for G. breve using a similarity index. We report here the first-time application of this technique to the detection of G. breve in natural, mixed phytoplankton communities. Pigment and spectral absorption data were collected …

Evaluation Of Infrared And Millimeter-Wave Imaging Technologies Applied To Traffic Management, C. Arthur Maccarley, Brian M. Hemme, Lawrence Klein
Electrical Engineering
This paper reviews the findings of a study commissioned by the California Department of Transportation to evaluate the potential of infrared and passive millimeter-wave imaging technologies for traffic surveillance and automated detection. Images formed from radiation at infrared and millimeter wavelengths are characterized by fundamentally different information compared with visible-spectrum images, and generally improved ability to penetrate obscured atmospheres such as fog or dust.
Ten examples of commercially available infrared (IR) imaging technologies and one experimental passive millimeter-wave (MMW) radiometric imaging apparatus were evaluated with respect to the specific requirements of highway monitoring and traffic management. A suite of traffic …

The State Of Urban And Community Forestry In California, Richard P. Thompson, James J. Ahern
The State Of Urban And Community Forestry In California, Richard P. Thompson, James J. Ahern
Agribusiness
Tree and vegetation management in the urban and urban-interface communities create issues of growing importance in an increasingly urbanized state such as California. Communities recognize urban forest resource sustainability, maintenance and enhancement of forested aesthetics as an important value. They support these areas with tax dollars, local government agency involvement (usually Parks and Recreation or Public Works departments), and with efforts in many cases by both individuals and volunteer organizations in management and planning.

Topologically Ordered Phases Of Smectics Confined In Anisotropic Random Media: Smectic Bragg Glasses, Karl Saunders, Brad Jacobsen, Leo Radzihovsky, John Toner
Topologically Ordered Phases Of Smectics Confined In Anisotropic Random Media: Smectic Bragg Glasses, Karl Saunders, Brad Jacobsen, Leo Radzihovsky, John Toner
Physics
We report the existence of two new topologically ordered glass phases of smectics in strained aerogel. In contrast to the case of unstrained aerogel, we find compelling theoretical arguments that a smectic in uniaxially stretched aerogel exhibits, for homeotropic nematic-aerogel alignment, a `smectic Bragg glass' in the universality class of the `XY Bragg glass'. On the other hand, a uniaxial compression, with homeotropic alignment, leads to an entirely novel type of anisotropic smectic elastic glass phase that we call the `m = 1 Bragg glass'. This latter phase exhibits anomalous elasticity, characterized by exponents that we calculate to high precision. …
Modeling Conifer Tree Crown Radius And Estimating Canopy Cover, Samantha J. Gill, Gregory S. Biging, Edward C. Murphy
Modeling Conifer Tree Crown Radius And Estimating Canopy Cover, Samantha J. Gill, Gregory S. Biging, Edward C. Murphy
Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences
Models of tree crown radius were developed for several conifer species of California. Typical forest inventory variables (DBH, height, height-to-crown base, crown class, basal area per hectare, and trees per hectare) were considered as independent variables in model development. Models were fitted using both ordinary and weighted least squares methods. It was found that for the species studied, an ordinary least squares linear regression with DBH as the only independent variable was appropriate. For some species studied, the addition of other independent variables provided minor improvements over the model with only DBH. These models of crown radius could be summed …

Photoresist Coating Process Control With Solvent Vapor Sensor, Richard N. Savage, Herbert Litvak, Emir Gurer
Photoresist Coating Process Control With Solvent Vapor Sensor, Richard N. Savage, Herbert Litvak, Emir Gurer
Materials Engineering
An apparatus for spin coating surfaces with liquid polymer comprises a spin coating chamber having a rotatable chuck for supporting an object to be coated. A distributor introduces gases into the chamber. A solvent vapor and carrier gas supply provides a carrier gas having a controlled level of solvent vapor therein within the range of from 0 to saturation concentrations of solvent vapor. A solvent vapor sensor is positioned with respect to the coating chamber to produce signals which correspond to the concentration of solvent vapor in the coating chamber. A control means is connected to the solvent vapor concentration …
