Evaluation Of Retrievable Drip Tape Irrigation Systems, Charles M. Burt, Jess T. Barreras
Evaluation Of Retrievable Drip Tape Irrigation Systems, Charles M. Burt, Jess T. Barreras
BioResource and Agricultural Engineering
California growers of lettuce, broccoli, celery, and cauliflower have long been leaders in drip tape applications. Starting in the early 1990s, large acreages of buried, subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) were installed with the intent of leaving the tape in the ground for up to 10 years (Burt and Styles, 1999). Tape burial depths were typically 20 - 25 cm below the soil surface. Although yields and irrigation efficiencies typically increased, there were numerous challenges with SDI. Since the tape was buried, such issues occurred as gopher damage, problems with root intrusion, soil back-siphonage when the system was shut off, damage …

Murgo Farms Inc.: Haccp, Iso 9000, And Iso 14000, David Sparling, Jonathon Lee, Wayne Howard
Agribusiness
Murgo Farms Inc., addresses the challenge of choosing between the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP), International Organization of Standardization (ISO) 9000, and ISO 14000 systems for a business with grain farming, elevator and spraying enterprises. Murgo has recently entered markets that are more quality oriented and wishes to expand its activities in those markets. The President wonders whether HACCP or ISO 9000 might help that expansion. However, the company is also faced with significant environmental risks due to its spraying and manure spreading activities and its proximity to a local municipal water source. There are good reasons for Murgo …

Feedback On Developing An Ais Curriculum, Joseph Callaghan, Eileen Peacock, Arline Savage
Accounting
This paper gathers evidence about an Accounting Information Systems (AIS) curriculum developed using a Model-Oriented Tool-Enhanced (MOTE) framework. The evidence was gathered by eliciting the perceptions of employer stake holders about the curriculum. The curriculum follows recommendations of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) Guideline No. 11. The IFAC recommendations offer guidance on the information technology in content in accounting curricula and are supported by the AICPA. The evidence gathered supports the inclusion of most elements of the curriculum.

An Experimental Assessment Of Business Students' Performance: Recognizing Risk Factors Associated With Misappropriation Of Assets, Kathryn A.S. Lancaster, Carolyn A. Strand
An Experimental Assessment Of Business Students' Performance: Recognizing Risk Factors Associated With Misappropriation Of Assets, Kathryn A.S. Lancaster, Carolyn A. Strand
Accounting
This paper reports the results of a study that was conducted to investigate the performance of senior-level business students as it pertains to recognizing certain clues or risk factors that are frequently associated with the misappropriation of entity assets. Based on three of the risk factors identified in SAS No. 82, an experiment was used to examine differences in performance based on academic major, fraud-specific knowledge, and certain experiences of the students. The primary contributions of this study are the discovery that: (1) an increasing number of risk factors; (2) knowledge accumulated in an accounting curriculum; (3) reading additional articles …

Biological Sciences
A large fossil skull and several rostra of Makaira nigricans Lacépède, 1802 (Perciformes: Istiophoridae), as well as some less diagnostic istiophorid remains, have been recovered from the middle facies of the Trinidad Formation near Rancho Algodones, San José del Cabo Basin, Baja California Sur, México. These are the only bill fish specimens known from fossiliferous deposits located between southern California and Panama. Based on published accounts of the presence of nannofossils and planktonic foraminifera, and additional field work, we conclude that the age of the study area is late Miocene to late Pliocene. Based on the habitat preferences of recent …
Adaptive Sampling In The Coastal Ocean At The Long Ecosystem Observatory, Mark A. Moline, W. Paul Bissett, Scott Glenn, Dale Haidvogel, Oscar Schofield
Adaptive Sampling In The Coastal Ocean At The Long Ecosystem Observatory, Mark A. Moline, W. Paul Bissett, Scott Glenn, Dale Haidvogel, Oscar Schofield
Biological Sciences
A multi-platform inter-disciplinary observation network has been operating at the Rutgers University Long-term Ecosystem Observatory (LEO) since 1996, with real-time capabilities beginning in July 1999. The network integrates numerous remote (satellites and shore- based), stationary (surface and subsurface), moveable (ships and AUVs) observation systems. The observation network provides spatially extensive updates of the physics, optics, chemistry and biology on time scales of an hour or less which are communicated in real-time to shipboard scientists and AUV operators. This rapid environmental assessment capability is already changing current paradigms for ocean adaptive sampling strategies. For example, in the well-sampled ocean, where forecast …

Modeling Atmosphere-Ocean Interactions And Primary Productivity, Joe Grzymski, Mark A. Moline, Jay T. Cullen
Biological Sciences
The heat budget, and hence the climate of the Earth, is sensitive to changes in the atmospheric greenhouse gas composition. Next to water vapor, carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most important atmospheric greenhouse gas affecting the Earth's radiative balance. Greenhouse gases raise the mean temperature of the Earth by absorbing and trapping long-wave radiation from the planet surface that would otherwise be lost to space.
Changes In Phytoplankton Assemblages Along The Antarctic Peninsula And Potential Implications For The Antarctic Food Web, Mark A. Moline, Herve Claustre, Thomas K. Frazer, Joe Grzymski, Maria Vernet
Changes In Phytoplankton Assemblages Along The Antarctic Peninsula And Potential Implications For The Antarctic Food Web, Mark A. Moline, Herve Claustre, Thomas K. Frazer, Joe Grzymski, Maria Vernet
Biological Sciences
The majority of the yearly organic carbon production int he coastal regions of the Southern ocean occurs during summer blooms. Changes in the quantity and quality of the phytoplankton standing crop during this period will likely impact organisms that occupy higher trophic levels within the ecosystem. Here we report a recurrent shift in the dominant phytoplankton taxa during the austral summer in a coastal region along the Antarctic Peninsula. The pattern was observed each year between 1991 and 1996 despite radically different biomass concentrations and meteorological and hydrographic conditions. We show that a repeated dominance of cryptophytes (Cryptophyceae) during the …
A Modal Pushover Analysis Procedure To Estimate Seismic Demands For Buildings: Theory And Preliminary Evaluation, Anil K. Chopra, Rakesh K. Goel
A Modal Pushover Analysis Procedure To Estimate Seismic Demands For Buildings: Theory And Preliminary Evaluation, Anil K. Chopra, Rakesh K. Goel
Civil and Environmental Engineering
The principal objective of this investigation is to develop a pushover analysis procedure based on structural dynamics theory, which retains the conceptual simplicity and computational attractiveness of current procedures with invariant force distribution, but provides superior accuracy in estimating seismic demands on buildings.
The standard response spectrum analysis (RSA) for elastic buildings is reformulated as a Modal Pushover Analysis (MPA). The peak response of the elastic structure due to its nth vibration mode can be exactly determined by pushover analysis of the structure subjected to lateral forces distributed over the height of the building according to s*n = …
Modeling An Algebraic Stepper, John Clements, Mathew Flatt, Matthias Felleisen
Modeling An Algebraic Stepper, John Clements, Mathew Flatt, Matthias Felleisen
Computer Science and Software Engineering
Programmers rely on the correctness of the tools in their programming environments. In the past, semanticists have studied the correctness of compilers and compiler analyses, which are the most important tools. In this paper, we make the case that other tools, such as debuggers and steppers, deserve semantic models, too, and that using these models can help in developing these tools. Our concrete starting point is the algebraic stepper in DrScheme, our Scheme programming environment. The algebraic stepper explains a Scheme computation in terms of an algebraic rewriting of the program text. A program is rewritten until it is in …

Wie Personen Mit Autismus Und Geistiger Behinderung Das Eigene Problemverhalten Sehen - Eine Qualitative Untersuchung Unter Einbeziehung Von Fokusgruppen, Michael B. Ruef
Graduate Studies in Education
The Prehistory Of Big Creek, Terry L. Jones
The Prehistory Of Big Creek, Terry L. Jones
Social Sciences
Archaeological research began at Big Creek in 1983 with the first of four summer field classes offered by UC Santa Cruz and UC Davis. For the most part, this was the first systematic research to be undertaken in the South Coast Range or on the Sur coast, and certainly the first of any consequence in the Big Creek drainage. Before 1983, archaeologists had tended to overlook Big Sur (however, see Baldwin 1971) because it seemed unlikely that it had been a major demographic or cultural center for prehistoric peoples. While it remains true that populations in Big Sur were probably …

Enhanced Biodegradation Of Hydrocarbon Contaminants Using Photocatalytic Pretreatment, Chad E. Green, Anita Stansberry, Jeff Sczechowski, Yarrow Nelson
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Photocatalysis was investigated as a pretreatment for hydrocarbon groundwater contamination at an abandoned oil field in Guadalupe, CA. A laboratory photoreactor, with a UV fluorescent lamp submerged in a suspension of TiO2 catalyst particles, was used to determine oxidation rates and the increase in biodegradability of the hydrocarbon mixture. Chemical oxidation demand (COD) and 5-day biological oxygen demand (BOD5) were measured as a function of exposure time using standard methods. During eight-hour photoreactor runs in a nitrogen atmosphere, the COD of diluent solutions in de-ionized water and diluent solutions in simulated groundwater both decreased by approximately 50%, …
