Method To Optimize Polymer Film Spin Coating For Polymer Led Displays, M. Cecchi, H. Smith, David Braun
Method To Optimize Polymer Film Spin Coating For Polymer Led Displays, M. Cecchi, H. Smith, David Braun
Electrical Engineering
Research and development of displays and image sensors based on semiconducting polymers require design of new polymer materials and evaluation of film properties. Application of statistical methods can expedite process development. Optimizing device performance entails determining the effect of several process parameters, necessitates numerous samples, and may consume more scarce new material than desired. Uniform film thickness, with no voids, pinholes, inhomogeneities, or particulate contamination across the substrate can improve display efficiency and uniformity. After performing and analyzing a two-cubed full-factorial experiment with three replicated center points, this paper concludes that spin velocity and polymer concentration have statistically significant effects …

Icdm: An Architecture And Toolkit In Support Of Agent-Based, Decision-Support Applications, Kym J. Pohl, Jens G. Pohl
Icdm: An Architecture And Toolkit In Support Of Agent-Based, Decision-Support Applications, Kym J. Pohl, Jens G. Pohl
Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center
Agent-based, decision-support systems provide human decision-makers with a means of solving complex problems through collaboration with heterogeneous collections of both human and computer-based expert agents. Over the past decade the Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center has developed several proof-of-concept and production-oriented agent-based, decision-support systems for both commercial and Department of Defense applications. These applications range in domain from engineering design to tactical command and control. While diverse in application, each of these systems is predicated on the same set of fundamental principles derived from years of experience in this area. Primary among these principles are the notions of high-level …

Correlated Evolution Of Chloroplast Heat Shock Protein Expression In Closely Related Plant Species, Charles A. Knight, David D. Ackerly
Correlated Evolution Of Chloroplast Heat Shock Protein Expression In Closely Related Plant Species, Charles A. Knight, David D. Ackerly
Biological Sciences
Interspecific variation in chloroplast low molecular weight (cLMW) HSP (heat shock protein) expression was examined with respect to phylogeny, species specific leaf area, chlorophyll fluorescence, and mean environmental conditions within species ranges. Eight species of Ceanothus (Rhamnaceae) were heat shocked for 4 h at several different temperatures. Leaf samples were collected immediately after the heat shock, and cLMW HSP expression was quantified using Western blots. At 450C species from the subgenus Cerastes had significantly greater cLMW HSP expression than species from the subgenus Ceanothus. Specific leaf area was negatively correlated with cLMW HSP expression after the 45 …
On The Solution Of A Class Of Large Body Problems With Partial Circular Symmetry (Multiple Asymmetries) By Using A Hybrid-Dimensional Finite-Difference Time-Domain (Fdtd) Method, Dean Arakaki, Wenhua Yu, Raj Mittra
Electrical Engineering
This paper presents an efficient method to solve a large body scattering problem, viz. a paraboloid reflector antenna system, with only partial circular symmetry. The asymmetry in the system is introduced by two factors, viz. the microstrip feed and an inhomogeneous radome. The paper presents a novel approach, based on the equivalence and reciprocity principles and the “equivalent” aperture theory, to overcome the asymmetry problem. The technique thereby enables substantial computational efficiencies by analyzing the majority of the three-dimensional (3-D) computational domain in an effective two-dimensional (2-D) simulation, with the remainder being analyzed using a 3-D algorithm.
Probabilistic Temporal Databases, I: Algebra, Alex Dekhtyar, Robert Ross, V. S. Subrahmanian
Probabilistic Temporal Databases, I: Algebra, Alex Dekhtyar, Robert Ross, V. S. Subrahmanian
Computer Science and Software Engineering
Dyreson and Snodgrass have drawn attention to the fact that in many temporal database applications, there is often uncertainty present about the start time of events, the end time of events, the duration of events, etc. When the granularity of time is small (e.g. milliseconds), a statement such as "Packet p was shipped sometime during the first 5 days of January, 1998" leads to a massive amount of uncertainty (5 X 24 X 60 X 60 X 1000) possibilities. As noted in [41], past attempts to deal with uncertainty in databases have been restricted to relatively small amounts of uncertainty …
A New Aglyptorhynchus (Perciformes: Scombroidei: Blochiidae) From The Late Oligocene Of Oregon, Harry L. Fierstine
A New Aglyptorhynchus (Perciformes: Scombroidei: Blochiidae) From The Late Oligocene Of Oregon, Harry L. Fierstine
Biological Sciences
A partial fish skull with a nearly complete rostrum, a cup-shaped sclerotic hone, and cycloid scales (UCMP 123170) from the Yaquina Formation (late Oligocene, Oregon) is described and identified as Aglyptorhynchus maxillaris, sp. nov. Unusual features of the rostrum include a fused premaxillary segment with a low dorsal keel, and a maxilla with both a flat flange on its postero-ventral margin and a large condyle that presumably allowed dorsoventral movement of the rostrum to increase the gape. The Yaquina Formation was estimated to have been deposited at a water depth of over 100m and a sea surface temperature of at …
Low Genetic Diversity In An Endangered Species: Recent Or Historic Pattern?, Marjorie D. Matocq, Francis X. Villablanca
Low Genetic Diversity In An Endangered Species: Recent Or Historic Pattern?, Marjorie D. Matocq, Francis X. Villablanca
Biological Sciences
Examining patterns of genetic diversity has become an integral component of many management plans concerning endangered species, yet interpreting the processes underlying such patterns remains challenging. We demonstrate low genetic diversity in a critically endangered small mammal population. A common interpretation of this pattern would be that it is the result of a known, recent decline in this population. We test this interpretation and find it to be incorrect. Instead, by using museum voucher specimens, we show that the pattern of low genetic diversity is historical. This study demonstrates the importance of choosing appropriate reference groups by which to interpret …
Effects Of Supplemental Viscous Damping On Inelastic Seismic Response Of Asymmetric Systems, Rakesh K. Goel
Effects Of Supplemental Viscous Damping On Inelastic Seismic Response Of Asymmetric Systems, Rakesh K. Goel
Civil and Environmental Engineering
This paper investigates the effects of supplemental viscous damping on the seismic response of one‐storey, asymmetric‐plan systems responding in the inelastic range of behaviour. It was found that addition of the supplemental damping reduces not only deformation demand but also ductility and hysteretic energy dissipation demands on lateral load resisting elements during earthquake loading. However, the level of reduction strongly depends on the plan‐wise distribution of supplemental damping. Nearly optimal reduction in demands on the outermost flexible‐side element, an element generally considered to be the most critical element, was realized when damping was distributed unevenly in the system plan such …
Learning Words Through Overhearing, Nameera Akhtar, Jennifer Jipson, Maureen A. Callanan
Learning Words Through Overhearing, Nameera Akhtar, Jennifer Jipson, Maureen A. Callanan
Psychology and Child Development
Recent research indicates that toddlers can monitor others' conversations, raising the possibility that they can acquire vocabulary in this way. Three studies examined 2-year-olds' (N= 88) ability to learn novel words when overhearing these words used by others. Children aged 2,6 were equally good at learning novel words— both object labels and action verbs—when they were overhearers as when they were directly addressed. For younger 2-year-olds (2,1), this was true for object labels, but the results were less clear for verbs. The findings demonstrate that 2-year-olds can acquire novel words from overheard speech, and highlight the active role …

Weight-Loss Maintenance In Overweight Individuals One To Five Years Following Successful Completion Of A Commercial Weight Loss Program, M. R. Lowe, K. Miller-Kovach, Suzanne Phelan
Kinesiology and Public Health
OBJECTIVE: To determine weight loss maintenance among participants in a commercial weight loss program (Weight Watchers) who had reached their goal weights 1-5 y previously.
DESIGN: A national sample (n=1002) was surveyed by phone to obtain demographic and weight-related information. An oversample (n=258) was recruited and weighed in person to develop a correction factor for self-reported weights in the national sample.
RESULTS: Based on corrected weights, weight regain from 1 to 5 y following weight loss ranged between 31.5 and 76.5%. At 5 y, 19.4% were within 5 lb of goal weight, 42.6% maintained a loss of 5% or more, …
A Mechanistic Model For Internal Bone Remodeling Exhibits Different Dynamic Responses In Disuse And Overload, Scott J. Hazelwood, R. Bruce Martin, Mark M. Rashid, Juan J. Rodrigo
A Mechanistic Model For Internal Bone Remodeling Exhibits Different Dynamic Responses In Disuse And Overload, Scott J. Hazelwood, R. Bruce Martin, Mark M. Rashid, Juan J. Rodrigo
Biomedical Engineering
Bone is a dynamic tissue which, through the process of bone remodeling in the mature skeleton, renews itself during normal function and adapts to mechanical loads. It is, therefore, important to understand the effect of remodeling on the mechanical function of bone, as well as the effect of the inherent time lag in the remodeling process. In this study, we develop a constitutive model for bone remodeling which includes a number of relevant mechanical and biological processes and use this model to address differences in the remodeling behavior as a volume element of bone is placed in disuse or overload. …
Flap Gate Design For Automatic Upstream Canal Water Level Control, Charles M. Burt, Russdon Angold, Mike Lehmkuhl, Stuart Styles
Flap Gate Design For Automatic Upstream Canal Water Level Control, Charles M. Burt, Russdon Angold, Mike Lehmkuhl, Stuart Styles
BioResource and Agricultural Engineering
The EXCEL design procedure for a simple hydraulic flap gate for automatic upstream canal water level control is provided. Basic configurations were developed in The Netherlands in the 1920s and have recently been used in Indonesia, the Dominican Republic, and Nigeria. Four irrigation districts in the San Joaquin Valley of California have constructed and installed over 60 properly functioning flap gates. The gates can be installed within 2 h, but require free discharge conditions and in practice are limited to controlling water depths of about 1 m or less.
