Perrine, Jim Regetz, Leslie J. Rissler, Amanda G. Stanley, Eric L. Walters, Nceas Habitat Conservation Plan Working Group

Biological Sciences

The number of habitat conservation plans ( HCP) has risen dramatically since the first plan was written over 18 years ago. Until recently, no studies have quantitatively investigated the scientific foundations underlying these documents. As part of a larger study of HCPs, we examined 43 plans primarily to assess the availability and use of scientific data and secondarily to determine the extent of involvement by, and influence of, independent scientists within the process. Specifically, our analysis focused on five key steps taken when an HCP is developed: assessing status of a species, determining take, predicting the project effects, mitigating for …

Mage: A Distributed Programming Model, Earl Barr, Raju Pandey, Michael Haungs Apr 2001

Mage: A Distributed Programming Model, Earl Barr, Raju Pandey, Michael Haungs

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Writing distributed programs is difficult. To ease this task, we introduce a new programming abstraction. which we call a mobility attribute. Mobility attributes provide a syntax that describes the mobility semantics of program components. Programmers attach mobility attributes to program components to dynamically control the placement of these components within the network. Mobility attributes intercept component invocations and decide whether and where to move a component before the component executes. This allows the programmer to improve her program's run-time efficiency by colocating components and resources. We present MAGE, an object oriented distributed system, that supports mobility attributes and illustrates their …

Hide Glue Applicator, Chris Campo, Benjamin Carrasco, Elias Saliba Apr 2001

Hide Glue Applicator, Chris Campo, Benjamin Carrasco, Elias Saliba

Mechanical Engineering

This study investigates the challenges inherent in applying hide glue in the crafting of violin and other stringed instruments. Hide glue, derived from animal collagen and protein, is essential for creating durable bonds that allow for necessary adjustments during fabrication. However, its meticulous heating and maintenance requirements pose logistical obstacles for luthiers lacking viable alternatives. To tackle this issue comprehensively, our project comprises several key components.

Initially, we conducted an in-depth analysis of the hide glue application process, delineating procedural steps and techniques to establish our design criteria and constraints. This foundational understanding formed the basis for further exploration. Additionally, …

Volume I, Master Plan And Environmental Impact Report, Facilities Planning And Capital Projects, California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo

Publications

Cal Poly’s new Master Plan provides principles and guidelines for the physical development of Cal Poly so that the University can sustain its distinctive mission as a polytechnic university into the 21st century. The Plan is designed to meet the educational needs of the campus, respond to the growing demand for higher education - particularly in scientific and technical fields - and address the role of the University as a member of its larger community.

Volume Ii, Master Plan And Environmental Impact Report: Comments And Responses To Comments Received On The Public Draft Eir (October 10, 2000), Facilities Planning And Capital Projects, California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo

Publications

This section of the Final EIR (FEIR) presents the responses to public comments made on the Cal Poly Master Plan and Draft EIR (DEIR). Some comments do not pertain to physical environmental issues, but responses are included to provide additional information for use by decision-makers. Many of the comments spoke directly to issues with the Master Plan. Responses to these are included here. Also included in the FEIR are staff-initiated text changes and errata.

Nitrogen And Phosphorus Use Efficiency In Stands Of Loblolly And Slash Pine, Christopher Dicus, Thomas J. Dean Mar 2001

Nitrogen And Phosphorus Use Efficiency In Stands Of Loblolly And Slash Pine, Christopher Dicus, Thomas J. Dean

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

Nitrogen and phosphorus use efficiency (NUE and PUE, respectively), the annual amount of stemwood produced per unit net N or P used in total aboveground production, were examined in 17-year-old pure stands of unthinned loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) and slash pine (Pinus elliottii Englem.) planted at two spacings. Slash pine stands had a greater NUE and PUE than loblolly pine, which was attributed to greater relative allocation of aboveground production to stemwood, lower foliar N and P concentrations, and greater foliar retranslocation of N and P by slash pine. Compared to 2.4 x 2.4 meter spaced stands, …

Little Languages And Their Programming Environments, John Clements, Paul Graunke, Shriram Krishnamurthi, Matthias Felleisen Mar 2001

Little Languages And Their Programming Environments, John Clements, Paul Graunke, Shriram Krishnamurthi, Matthias Felleisen

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Programmers constantly design, implement, and program in little languages. Two different approaches to the implementation of little languages have evolved. One emphasizes the design of little languages from scratch, using conventional technology to implement interpreters and compilers. The other advances the idea of extending a general-purpose host language; that is, the little language shares the host language's features (variables, data, loops, functions) where possible; its interpreters and compilers; and even its type soundness theorem. The second approach is often called a language embedding.

This paper directs the attention of little language designers to a badly neglected area: the programming environments …

Transient Response Of Passive Matrix Polymer Led Displays, David Braun, K. Erickson, G. Yu Mar 2001

Transient Response Of Passive Matrix Polymer Led Displays, David Braun, K. Erickson, G. Yu

Electrical Engineering

Video displays based on polymer and organic displays require high resolution and high data rates. However, the transient response of passive matrix displays based on polymer and organic light-emitting diodes limits display resolution, image uniformity, and image contrast. We use circuit simulation in order to quantify these consequences. This work analyzes how the transient response depends on display resolution, display geometry, pixel position, and row and column electrode design. We conclude that advanced display designs can achieve uniform images at high resolution and contrast.
