The Affective Labor Of Cross-Disciplinary Communication Education: Enacting A Feminist Praxis, Kailin Regutti, Zane Austin Willard
Feminist Pedagogy
This critical commentary addresses the pedagogical experiences of being instructional assistants of communication in an engineering classroom at a Florida public university. In weaving together our experiences, we reflexively explore the affective labor and challenges of teaching interpersonal and intercultural communication concepts in a STEM environment while navigating restrictive state legislation and varying disciplinary perspectives and metatheoretical assumptions. We manage these dynamic tensions by adopting a feminist pedagogical praxis that works toward reimagining futures for STEM education—a future that helps students foster a critical consciousness and apply communication as a means of developing more equitable and just solutions across industries. …

In a collaborative letter, Florida feminist faculty instructors describe pedagogies of discomfort devised by the state to empower an assumed alienated student decentered by difference and to disquiet a culturally responsive teacher who treats education as transformation and liberation rather than career-relevant job training. They recall classroom resistance strategies and tactics not only to speak to the policies of erasure in this moment, but also to speak to the precarious student who needs to feel cared for, honored, and acknowledged in their pursuit to learn and unlearn to be in community today. Active resistance to controlled course content is an integral to teaching humanities classes; reading diverse literature provides students with exposure to the unfamiliar, somewhat familiar, or validation and even understanding of their own experiences; expanding knowledge through historical and contemporary readings can help students learn while expanding presence for under-represented or suppressed communities. Exposure can help students understand how and why we have arrived where we currently are politically and socially, which often leads students to question draconian measures and come to a new or better understanding of the plights many face. Restrictions on reproductive health education in Florida have resulted in misinformation and taboos that could be addressed through parallels in science fiction. As Paweł Frelik, University of Warsaw Professor of American Studies, reminds us, science fiction is a “cultural discourse,” in which “fantastic figures such as aliens, clones, and cyborgs are allegories of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, able-bodiedness, and other dimensions of individual subjectivity.” Octavia Butler’s short story “Bloodchild” (1995) will be used in this activity to discuss reproductive rights with students in the wake of so many legal challenges to those same rights. In Ethics and The Limits of Philosophy and elsewhere, Bernard Williams presents a formidable objection to utilitarianism. Dubbed the integrity objection, the worry is that utilitarianism is too demanding in requiring agents to abandon their projects in favor of complying with moral injunctions. Elizabeth Ashford (2000) has replied, in part, by arguing that Williams’ account of positive obligation (WPO) is similarly susceptible to exacting burdensome demands on moral agents, such as care for those in emergency situations (pp. 428-431). This is the second in a series of papers in which we use JWST Mid Infrared Instrument multiband imaging to measure the warm dust emission in a sample of 31 multiply imaged quasars, to be used as a probe of the particle nature of dark matter. We present measurements of the relative magnifications of the strongly lensed warm dust emission in a sample of nine systems. The warm dust region is compact and sensitive to perturbations by populations of haloes down to masses ~ 10⁶ M☉. The prevalence of cardiovascular disease is on a continuous exponential growth across the globe. Thus, research into the underlying factors, effective methods of diagnoses, and preventive measures is necessary. Endothelial dysfunction is an early detector of cardiovascular diseases and can be used to inform people of preventative measures and early treatments before any extreme medical conditions occur. The Microphysiological Systems Laboratory aims to develop colorectal cancer tumor models under a hypoxic environment to assess model response to pharmaceutical compounds in vitro. To perform relevant studies, researchers have attempted to use different hypoxic inducing strategies such as a nitrogen pod and hypoxic incubator to recreate in vivo physiological responses to hypoxia. However, studies would be interrupted due to incubator functionality failure. To ensure successful and physiologically relevant studies, I improved and verified the robustness and reliability of a hypoxic incubator previously designed and manufactured in the lab. The fabrication of microfluidic devices often requires specialized methods. The development of these methods requires careful characterization and understanding of the processes involved. Using primarily PolyJet 3D printing technology, microfluidics offers a wide scope of applications such as microfluidic benthic microbial fuel cells (MBMFCs) and electrostatic artificial muscles. MBMFCs benefit from the confinement of the microbes resulting in close proximity between the electrode and the organisms. Using a modular design called the Sponge, assembly and upscaling is possible. Electrostatic artificial muscles benefit from a microfluidic approach due to the non-linearity of electrostatic attraction creating disproportionate benefits when miniaturized. When designed …

Loving Beyond The Human: Anthropocentric And Anthropomorphic Values In The Loving And Hating Of Nonhuman Animals, Stephanie M. Takata-Struble

I offer an account of the centrality of values to moral experience and the ways in which value disorder characterizes our relationships with nonhuman animals. To do this, I first provide an account of Max Scheler’s phenomenology of values, including the hierarchy of values, and loving and hating as value orientations. Drawing on this account, I map out two value orientations specific to our relationships with animals—anthropocentrism and anthropomorphism. Within these two value orientations, I detail three specific forms of valuation—gustatory, cosmetic, and anthropomorphic substitution—which demonstrate the ways in which people’s naïve love for the nonhuman animal is often, phenomenologically, …

This project examines the effect of sociotechnical thinking in the context of engineering core classes. Sociotechnical analysis is a problem-solving method that integrates social economic factors into a technical problem to mimic a “real world problem”. Our team analyzed 51 responses to a sociotechnical module from two Statics classes at Cal Poly. Responses were coded and themes identified using qualitative research methods and an online qualitative research software. Our team identified a relationship between engagement with the module and discussions of self, personal engineering identity, and thinking skills.
