A Comparison Of Mass Timber Perceptions Among Construction Professionals Over Time, Josh A. Higginson
A Comparison Of Mass Timber Perceptions Among Construction Professionals Over Time, Josh A. Higginson
Construction Management
Mass timber is a relatively new construction building material consisting of large-scale engineered wood products such as cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glue-laminated timber (glulam). It is gaining attention as a sustainable alternative to traditional steel and concrete, offering benefits such as reduced carbon emissions and enhanced aesthetic appeal. Despite being used on notable projects recently, it is not yet widely accepted by the industry as a whole. This study investigates the evolving awareness, benefits, and challenges associated with mass timber construction among U.S. construction professionals. Through a survey of over 100 construction practitioners, primarily from Cal Poly’s Construction Management Advisory …
Lab Exercise For Cm 114: Static Bending Of Timber And Its Alternatives, Samuel E. Arreola
Lab Exercise For Cm 114: Static Bending Of Timber And Its Alternatives, Samuel E. Arreola
Construction Management
This lab exercise investigates the static bending behavior of various structural materials. In this lab, the primary objective is to evaluate and compare the stress, strain, and deflection of 2” x 10” lumber, TJI joists, LVL beams, and steel studs under controlled loading conditions. This lab will require the calculation of cross-sectional properties, applying incremental loads until failure, and recording all corresponding deflection values. Material failure was visually documented using photographs to understand structural performance under the load. By using structural engineering principles and the formulas for stress and strain, the completion of this lab exercise provides a comprehensive analysis …
Queering Composition Pedagogy: Camp-Informed Teaching Within Florida's Censorship, Isabelle V. Karleskint
Queering Composition Pedagogy: Camp-Informed Teaching Within Florida's Censorship, Isabelle V. Karleskint
Feminist Pedagogy
This social justice strategy article examines composition teaching within Florida colleges and universities over a seven-year period of intense political and social change. These institutions carry different levels of protection from Florida's censorship and anti-LGBTQIA+ laws. Using principles from Susan Sontag's 1964 "Notes On Camp," the author examines strategies for navigating these boundaries and creating safe, inclusive spaces for students while flying under the oppressive state government's 'radar.' This article found that teaching which includes multimodality, popular culture, digital learning, inclusive content, and identity politics can 'camp' pedagogy, with benefits to students and low risk to faculty. However, it also …

"Teaching The Past As Commentary On The Present: Challenging Suppression, Erasure, And Disinformation Via Literary Texts In Times Of Looming Fascism", Jennifer M. Nader
Feminist Pedagogy
Active resistance to controlled course content is an integral to teaching humanities classes; reading diverse literature provides students with exposure to the unfamiliar, somewhat familiar, or validation and even understanding of their own experiences; expanding knowledge through historical and contemporary readings can help students learn while expanding presence for under-represented or suppressed communities. Exposure can help students understand how and why we have arrived where we currently are politically and socially, which often leads students to question draconian measures and come to a new or better understanding of the plights many face. While outwardly enacting feminist pedagogies in Florida classrooms …

Williams’ Account Of Positive Obligation And Speciesism: Extending Ashford’S Internal Argument Against Williams, Nathan Bray
Williams’ Account Of Positive Obligation And Speciesism: Extending Ashford’S Internal Argument Against Williams, Nathan Bray
Between the Species
In Ethics and The Limits of Philosophy and elsewhere, Bernard Williams presents a formidable objection to utilitarianism. Dubbed the integrity objection, the worry is that utilitarianism is too demanding in requiring agents to abandon their projects in favor of complying with moral injunctions. Elizabeth Ashford (2000) has replied, in part, by arguing that Williams’ account of positive obligation (WPO) is similarly susceptible to exacting burdensome demands on moral agents, such as care for those in emergency situations (pp. 428-431). If these charges of over-demandingness apply to each theory, and if utilitarianism is seen as obligating agents to care for nonhuman …

Loving Beyond The Human: Anthropocentric And Anthropomorphic Values In The Loving And Hating Of Nonhuman Animals, Stephanie M. Takata-Struble
Loving Beyond The Human: Anthropocentric And Anthropomorphic Values In The Loving And Hating Of Nonhuman Animals, Stephanie M. Takata-Struble
Between the Species
I offer an account of the centrality of values to moral experience and the ways in which value disorder characterizes our relationships with nonhuman animals. To do this, I first provide an account of Max Scheler’s phenomenology of values, including the hierarchy of values, and loving and hating as value orientations. Drawing on this account, I map out two value orientations specific to our relationships with animals—anthropocentrism and anthropomorphism. Within these two value orientations, I detail three specific forms of valuation—gustatory, cosmetic, and anthropomorphic substitution—which demonstrate the ways in which people’s naïve love for the nonhuman animal is often, phenomenologically, …

Engineering Student Learning And Identity: Development Using Sociotechnical Analysis, Alex Yannelli, Fredy Herrarte
College of Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Program
This project examines the effect of sociotechnical thinking in the context of engineering core classes. Sociotechnical analysis is a problem-solving method that integrates social economic factors into a technical problem to mimic a “real world problem”. Our team analyzed 51 responses to a sociotechnical module from two Statics classes at Cal Poly. Responses were coded and themes identified using qualitative research methods and an online qualitative research software. Our team identified a relationship between engagement with the module and discussions of self, personal engineering identity, and thinking skills. Future goals will be focused on continued data collection and analysis, application …

Optimizing Resume Authenticity And Ats Compatibility With Llm Feedback Integration, Katie He, Justin Lau
College of Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Program
Resume generation using Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT is becoming increasingly popular for automating the creation of customized resumes, but significant user modification is often required before submission. Common issues include poor alignment with job descriptions, inflated qualifications, and lack of authenticity, which undermine the effectiveness of LLM-generated resumes. This project addresses these challenges by integrating feedback from Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to guide LLMs in producing resumes that accurately reflect an applicant’s qualifications and better align with job-specific requirements. By optimizing the model's output through ATS feedback, the project aims to create more authentic, tailored, and ATS-compatible resumes, …

Computational Modeling Of High Yttrium Refractory High Entropy Alloy Microstructures, Kaleb C. Ryan, Marissa M. Baker
Computational Modeling Of High Yttrium Refractory High Entropy Alloy Microstructures, Kaleb C. Ryan, Marissa M. Baker
College of Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Program
Refractory high entropy alloys (RHEAs) are advanced metals made up of five or more principal elements in roughly equal amounts. The microstructural effects of alloying with yttrium as a principal element for RHEAs are currently not well understood. This project compared RHEA microstructures from literature with simulations using the High Entropy Alloy Predicting Software (HEAPS), which computes 10 screening criteria to predict the microstructure of a RHEA composition. The accuracy of HEAPS predictions was assessed by comparing them with experimentally validated microstructures found in literature. A combination of criteria was found to have a 95.8% accuracy rate, and a new …

Supporting Neurodivergent Students, William W. Toll
College of Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Program
Prior work—a 2019 study by Schreffler, Vasquez, Chini, et al.—investigated the efficacy of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in supporting students with disabilities (SWD) in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education (STEM). SWD are somewhat more likely than the general population to enroll in STEM majors, but for some disabilities, students are less likely to graduate with those majors. Nonetheless, the authors found a paucity of prior work involving the use of UDL for SWD in STEM. In addition to highlighting the need for future quantitative research overall, the authors noted that it would be interesting to investigate which UDL …

Concrete Design: Underwater Concrete Forms In A Saltwater Environment, Noah Z. Lau
Construction Management
This following project investigated the effects of salt on the concrete curing process. Concrete possesses numerous strengths, making it extremely versatile. This makes it one of the most utilized construction materials. New improved methods are constantly being developed for concrete’s application as a construction material. While concrete is a flexible material with many strengths, it is not without its flaws. Concrete, while strong in compression is weak in tension. It has long cure times and doesn’t generally handle moisture well. This paper evaluates concrete’s change in strength from letting concrete cure in a salt-based underwater environment. To determine the full …

Practicing Feminist Disability Pedagogy: Building Interdependence Through A Classroom Participation Menu, Kristen L. Cole
Practicing Feminist Disability Pedagogy: Building Interdependence Through A Classroom Participation Menu, Kristen L. Cole
Feminist Pedagogy
Following the lead of Parsloe & Smith (2022), this article explains and advocates possible modes of participation that consider the disabled, chronically ill, and systemically vulnerable students and faculty who are fighting to succeed in higher education. The way participation is measured in college classes is often ableist in nature; thus, it is important to unpack the ableist assumptions that undergird how we arrange and assess participation. Utilizing Knoll’s (2009) explication of interdependency as a practice of feminist disability pedagogy, this article offers a semester long activity called a participation menu, which provides a framework for distributing the responsibility of …

Making (Virtual) Space For Disability Equity In Academia, Melissa Vosen Callens, Cali Anicha, Larry Napoleon Jr.
Feminist Pedagogy
Virtual or hybrid options provide a way for marginalized faculty and staff to fully participate in their fields and on their campuses. As such, an equitable and pandemic-informed academic workplace should include fully accessible and well-resourced hybrid participation options for department meetings and events, office work, and classroom duties. In spring 2023, we created a work group on our campus to address the challenges of hybrid work and co-create campus-wide recommendations for hybrid workspaces. In this article, we share our findings and evidence-based recommendations, many of which draw on Universal Design for Learning, as well as offer suggestions on how …
Disabling Critique: Structural Barriers To Critical Disability Approaches In Teacher Education, Albert Stabler
Disabling Critique: Structural Barriers To Critical Disability Approaches In Teacher Education, Albert Stabler
Feminist Pedagogy
Considerable research has documented student resistance to efforts at diversity and equity in college curricula. Scholars have also focused on negative attitudes among K-12 teacher candidates toward anti-racist and culturally informed approaches within education, as well as on the instrumental and teacher-centered approaches that typify special education teacher preparation. Through citing this research and drawing on my own experiences as a disabled art teacher education faculty instructor attempting to encourage a critical disability perspective, I make the argument that numerous factors contribute to an anti-critical attitude among teacher candidates preparing to work with students receiving special education services.
Disability, Belongingness, And Accommodations In Post-Pandemic Learning, Madelaine A. Coffman, Meagan Winkelseth
Disability, Belongingness, And Accommodations In Post-Pandemic Learning, Madelaine A. Coffman, Meagan Winkelseth
Feminist Pedagogy
During the post-pandemic return to campus, lingering expectations for instructor flexibility illuminated the need for classroom cultures that support inclusivity and belongingness for all students. Yet power asymmetries between students and instructors, along with implicit expectations about what it means to be normal, make disclosure of personal disability, precarity, or other concealable stigmatized identities a risky prospect for those who most need accommodation. By taking a dialogical approach to classroom culture and inviting students to identify areas where flexibility is needed, instructors can increase group cohesion and feelings of belongingness, improve student-instructor relationships, and promote non-stigmatized access to accommodations. In …

Collective Access, Collective Liberation: Disability Justice And Abolitionist Pedagogical Worldmaking Toward Post(?)-Pandemic Futures, Hailey N. Otis
Feminist Pedagogy
This critical commentary poses the question: what if we didn’t return to the “normal” of strict, ableist classrooms policies rooted in the bureaucratic, legalistic framework of “accommodations” and, instead, embraced the Disability Justice principle of collective access? After critiquing the accommodations process used in most higher education settings, I advocate for an approach we might call collective access pedagogy, which works from the fundamental assumptions that (1) all bodies exist on a spectrum of dis/ability and, thus, we all have individual needs based on our unique bodyminds, and (2) that we don’t need the constant threat of a pandemic to …
