Immigration, Incarceration, Deportation: Asian Americans In The Criminal Justice System, Agnes Mung
Immigration, Incarceration, Deportation: Asian Americans In The Criminal Justice System, Agnes Mung
History
Asian Americans have been long overlooked in the United States for their contributions and have been restricted by ever-changing stereotypes and perceptions. Within the Asian American community, the incarcerated population and former criminals have been hidden because of cultural stigmas and missing statistics. In the 1980s, a large population of Asian American youth were becoming involved in criminal activity because of difficulty adapting to life in the United States after arriving at a young age. Gang membership and racial profiling increased the chances that Asian Americans would be arrested, although Asian Americans are less likely to be sentenced to prison …

Effect Of Bio-Augmentation Product Biowish® Septic Rescue On The Wastewater Treatment Performance Of Residential Septic Tanks, Kimberly Michelle Lamar Merilles
Master's Theses
Residential septic systems provide reliable wastewater treatment for over 26 million homes and facilities in the United States, and many more worldwide. When properly maintained, these systems are reliable, low-cost, and long-term treatments for residential wastewater. When neglected, septic systems can fail and lead to health concerns and ecological harm to soil and groundwater contamination through the improperly treated wastewater effluent.
This study tested the effect of the bio-augmentation product BiOWiSH® Septic Rescue of BiOWiSH® Technologies International, Inc. (hereafter referred to as BiOWiSH) on the biological treatment of residential septic tanks. BiOWiSH is meant to act as a bio-augmentation product …

Fluid Delivery System For A Cell Culture On A Microfluidic Chip, Austin J. Roeder, Colleen A. Richards, Emily A. Matteson
Biomedical Engineering
This project report provides a description of the progress made in the development of a fluid delivery system for a microfluidic cell culture on a chip. The system is intended to be used in a humidified incubator in a university laboratory and the fluid delivery system is required to exist and operate within that incubator for extended periods of time. Therefore, the system will be gravity-driven and contain no electronic components. The key specification of the system is to provide fluid flow at a constant velocity.
After manufacturing and testing the device, all specifications were met except for the fluid …
Indoor Air Monitoring Of Ethanol And Benzene In A Pilot Winery Using Active Sampling, Andrew I. Kaneda
Indoor Air Monitoring Of Ethanol And Benzene In A Pilot Winery Using Active Sampling, Andrew I. Kaneda
Master's Theses
Acute indoor concentrations of benzene and ethanol were evaluated in the California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo’s pilot winery workroom. Air samples were collected during four different wine-making activities: fermentation, fermentation with Brix content testing, post-alcoholic fermentation pressing, and storage/finishing. Average workroom benzene concentrations ranged from 0.05 to 0.12 mg/m3. Ethanol concentrations in the winery workroom varied with the activity, ranging from 0.9 to 12 mg/m3. Pressing and fermentation with Brix content testing both led to higher indoor ethanol concentrations than fermentation without Brix content testing and storage/finishing.
Tracer gas decay air exchange tests were …
Accelerated Wear Reactor Testing, Tristan Frisella, Daniel Alanis, Kian Ashoubi
Accelerated Wear Reactor Testing, Tristan Frisella, Daniel Alanis, Kian Ashoubi
Biomedical Engineering
Carbon dioxide accounts for a large amount of global greenhouse gases released into the environment. Because plastic degradation emits carbon dioxide, there has been interest to investigate how much carbon dioxide various plastics generate as they degrade. We have been tasked to create a dehumidifier and carbon dioxide sensor assembly for an accelerated wear testing apparatus that degrades plastic. Several products and literature currently exist that share similarity with our assembly but have not been manufactured to achieve the same combination of measurements we are expecting of our accelerated wear testing device. The following report shall introduce these products and …
Feeling Green: The Benefits Of Green Space On Urbanites' Mental Health, Kathryn A. Hoagland
Feeling Green: The Benefits Of Green Space On Urbanites' Mental Health, Kathryn A. Hoagland
Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies
This investigation intends to determine the best methods for incorporating public green space into dense urban areas, for the betterment of residents' mental health. Data from studies showing differences in the prevalence of anxiety and depression in urban and rural areas are discussed alongside data from studies looking at the effect that certain types of green space might have on mental health. While there is no exact consensus on the extent to which nature has positive effects on mental health there is enough of a correlation to argue for the implementation of public green spaces in urban design, in order …

Perturbation Based Decomposition Of Semg Signals, Rachel Huettinger
Perturbation Based Decomposition Of Semg Signals, Rachel Huettinger
Master's Theses
Surface electromyography records the motor unit action potential signals in the vicinity of the electrode to reveal information on muscle activation. Decomposition of sEMG signals for characterization of constituent motor unit action potentials in terms of amplitude and firing times is useful for clinical research as well as diagnosis of neurological disorders. Successful decomposition of sEMG signals would allow for pertinent motor unit action potential information to be acquired without discomfort to the subject or the need for a well-trained operator (compared with intramuscular EMG). To determine amplitudes and firing times for motor unit action potentials in an sEMG recording, …

On The Ethical Significance Of Ecological Restoration: Domination Or Collaboration?, Roger J.H. King
On The Ethical Significance Of Ecological Restoration: Domination Or Collaboration?, Roger J.H. King
Between the Species
Ecological restoration is essential both to a sustainable human culture and to the well being of the more-than-human world. Yet some philosophers criticize enthusiasm for restoration as yet another manifestation of human domination and anthropocentric arrogance. The paper critiques this view as persistently presented by Eric Katz, and offers an alternative view of restoration’s ethical significance. Rather than seeing restoration as a unilateral human imposition on nature, restoration deserves defense as an expression of an interspecies etiquette, attentive to collaboration with the more-than-human world. But the full ethical significance of ecological restoration will not be realized without deep change in …
Does The Acorn Barnacle Balanus Glandula Exhibit Predictable Gradients In Metabolic Performance Across The Intertidal Zone?, Kali Horn
Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects
Intertidal organisms live in one of the most environmentally stressful habitats on the planet, and daily fluctuations they experience in abiotic factors (e.g., temperature, oxygen, salinity, pH) are predicted to intensify as our global climate continues to change. Elevated temperature and oxygen limitation are two dominant stressors associated with periodic air emersion in the littoral zone; both of which have substantial direct effects on metabolism in ectotherms. In the proposed study, we aim to profile the ‘metabolic phenotype’ of acorn barnacles (Balanus glandula) from different intertidal zones (low, mid, high). We define metabolic phenotype as the individual’s baseline metabolic performance, …
Quantifying Proliferative And Surface Marker Heterogeneity In Colony‐Founding Connective Tissue Progenitors And Their Progeny Using Time‐Lapse Microscopy, Edward Kwee, Gerald M. Saidel, Kimerly Powell, Christopher M. Heylman, Cynthia A. Boehm, George F. Muschler
Quantifying Proliferative And Surface Marker Heterogeneity In Colony‐Founding Connective Tissue Progenitors And Their Progeny Using Time‐Lapse Microscopy, Edward Kwee, Gerald M. Saidel, Kimerly Powell, Christopher M. Heylman, Cynthia A. Boehm, George F. Muschler
Biomedical Engineering
Connective tissue progenitors (CTPs) are defined as the heterogeneous population of tissue‐resident stem and progenitor cells that are capable of proliferating and differentiating into connective tissue phenotypes. The prevalence and variation in clonal progeny of CTPs can be characterized using a colony formation assay. However, colony assays do not directly assess the characteristics of the colony‐founding CTP. We performed large, field‐of‐view, time‐lapse microscopy to manually track colonies back to the founding cells. Image processing and analysis was used to characterize the colonies and their founding cells. We found that the traditional colony‐forming unit (CFU) assay underestimates the number of founding …
Effectiveness Of Windrow Composting Methodology In Killing A Thermo-Tolerant Species Of Salmonella During Mortality Composting, Spencer Gabriel Myers
Effectiveness Of Windrow Composting Methodology In Killing A Thermo-Tolerant Species Of Salmonella During Mortality Composting, Spencer Gabriel Myers
Master's Theses
In a large agricultural operation, such as the one at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, disposal of deceased animals is an immense issue. The cost of transporting and rendering every dead animal is inhibitory to the general function of the agricultural operations and their thin budget. Therefore, we propose that composting mortalities could be an economical alternative. Composting is a recognized method for taking animal waste products along with carbon waste and turning it into a pathogen-free, nutrient-rich topsoil. Carcass composting is in fact performed in other countries and states to varying degrees of success. However, the California EPA limits …
Bentham And The “Famous Footnote”, Randall Otto
Bentham And The “Famous Footnote”, Randall Otto
Between the Species
It is the contention of this paper that animal liberationists have misconstrued and misused Bentham’s “famous footnote” as an advocacy of species equivalency of interests, as though he were an incipient opponent of what has come to be known as “speciesism.” The context of Bentham’s footnote was of mistreatment of others that are capable of feeling pain. He was advocating in the footnote for laws that would end what he viewed as instances of cruelty toward animals. He was not advocating for vegetarianism or an end to killing animals where they can be of benefit to human beings, where “we …

Fabrication Of Miniaturized Paper-Based Microfluidic Devices (Micropads), E. Brandon Strong, Spencer A. Schultz, Andres Martinez, Nathaniel W. Martinez
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (microPADs) are emerging as cost-effective and portable platforms for point-of-care assays. A fundamental limitation of microPAD fabrication is the imprecise nature of most methods for patterning paper. The present work demonstrates that paper patterned via wax printing can be miniaturized by treating it with periodate to produce higher-resolution, high-fidelity microPADs. The optimal miniaturization parameters were determined by immersing microPADs in various concentrations of aqueous sodium periodate (NaIO4) for varying lengths of time. This treatment miniaturized microPADs by up to 80% in surface area, depending on the concentration of periodate and length of the reaction …
Effects Of Tidal Elevation On The Recruitment And Survival Of Balanus And Chthamalus, Evie Borchard, Hasan Demirci
Effects Of Tidal Elevation On The Recruitment And Survival Of Balanus And Chthamalus, Evie Borchard, Hasan Demirci
STAR Program Research Presentations
Balanus and Chthamalus species of barnacles are sessile arthropods native and abundant in the intertidal zone along the California coast. Due to environmental and physiological factors, barnacles have variable survivability at different tidal elevations. Urosalpinx cinerea, the Atlantic oyster drill, is an invasive species whose predation patterns can manipulate the zonation of native populations causing substantial local impacts. The effects of tidal elevation on Ostrea lurida (the Olympia oyster) predation by drills is a well-studied example. Drills killed about 60% of adult oysters at +7.0cm MLLW within 2 months while oysters at +37cm were not preyed upon (Kiriakopolos et al. …
Carbon And Nitrogen Changes Due To Soil Warming, Dana Coppernoll-Houston, Chris Potter
Carbon And Nitrogen Changes Due To Soil Warming, Dana Coppernoll-Houston, Chris Potter
STAR Program Research Presentations
Carbon and nitrogen in soils varies worldwide, but concerns are being raised about the release rates of these nutrients due to global warming. It has been hypothesized in previous studies that carbon is released as the soils warms and microorganisms respire more. Similarly, aspects of the nitrogen cycle may also speed up due to increased metabolism from bacteria. If large amounts of carbon are released from soil storages, it could cause large feedback loops in the climate cycle. Most soil warming experiments heat the soil 1-5 degrees C warmer over a period of years, to simulate global warming. Our study …
Links Between Environmental Conditions And Whole Body Regeneration Of A Colonial Ascidian, Cecilia Hernandez, Sarah Cohen
Links Between Environmental Conditions And Whole Body Regeneration Of A Colonial Ascidian, Cecilia Hernandez, Sarah Cohen
STAR Program Research Presentations
Botrylloides diegensis is among the most common colonial ascidian invaders with the ability to undergo whole body regeneration (WBR), as do other botryllid ascidians. This phenomenon allows entire adult zooids to arise from minute fragments of vascular tissue including single ampullae. With the global spread and unknown environmental range of B. diegensis this study focuses on the ecological component in the process of WBR, particularly the influences of temperature and salinity on the rate of regeneration. Six adult colonies were collected and clonal replicates were established allow comparison of regeneration at a variable field site (16-19 ¬∞C;28-31 salinity) and a …
Epitope-Targeted Peptide Inhibitors Of Myc-Max Dimerization, Ana M. Oliviera Gomes, Matt Idso
Epitope-Targeted Peptide Inhibitors Of Myc-Max Dimerization, Ana M. Oliviera Gomes, Matt Idso
STAR Program Research Presentations
Myc is a popular transcription factor that is found in about 30% of human cancers. Along with being present in many cancers, it is also a potent oncogenic driver. Myc dimerizes with Max in order to promote transcription of genes that are associated with cellular proliferation, differentiation, and survival. In cancers that are Myc-driven, the Myc concentrations are higher than in healthy cells. Developing drugs in which impede Myc-Max dimerization has been difficult because there are many interactions that occur over large interfaces. This project hypothesizes that using molecular peptide ligands that adsorb to Myc at the Myc-Max dimer interface …
An Albino Mutant In Brassica Rapa Maps To The Pdx2 Locus On Chromosome 10, Beatriz M. Garcia
An Albino Mutant In Brassica Rapa Maps To The Pdx2 Locus On Chromosome 10, Beatriz M. Garcia
STAR Program Research Presentations
We have identified an albino mutant in the plant Brassica rapa. This recessive mutation could provide insights into the photosynthetic pathways of all plants. Previously the mutation was mapped to chromosome 10 of Brassica rapa. To narrow down the chromosomal region containing the albino mutation, we grew a segregating population of plants. DNA was extracted from albino and wildtype (green) plants and genotyped using PCR markers on chromosome 10. The genotype detected using the INDEL2 marker perfectly predicted whether a plant was albino or WT. This indicates that the INDEL2 marker is tightly linked to the albino mutation. INDEL2 is …

Cichlid Size Vs Flow Rate, Amy E. Naumovski
Cichlid Size Vs Flow Rate, Amy E. Naumovski
STAR Program Research Presentations
Cichlids are a diverse group of fish that are known for their prenatal and postnatal care of their eggs and frys (baby fish). This unique characteristic creates a limitation on the amount of eggs a cichlid can lay and protect, which is particulalry effected by the size of the eggs. Cichlids have a large variance in their egg size, which correlates to a large variance in their fry size. This project explores the trade offs cichlids make in egg size and fry size by specifically testing the ability of varying sized cichlids to swim in different flow rates. This could …

Comparing Orientation Behavior And Prey Preference Of Leptasterias Spp. Between Microhabitats, Jenna C. Sanders, Margaret W. Johnson, C Sarah Cohen
STAR Program Research Presentations
Leptasterias spp. is a species complex of small, six rayed, predatory sea stars that inhabit rocky intertidal communities along the Pacific coast of North America. A developmental mode of brooding their young, rather than broadcasting for planktonic development, limits dispersal away from the natal area, and may also result in fine scale local adaptation of populations. Local adaptation may lead to morphological and behavioral differences among populations, specifically towards the most available prey. Within the rocky intertidalthere are zones of high and low wave impact which create microhabitats with their own selective forces. In areas of high wave impact, stars …

Hammarby Sjöstad: Planning Precedent, Christian Bernard, Arielle Eleazar, Ryan M. Huddlestun
Precedents
Hammarby Sjöstad, Stockholm, Sweden (2004-16): Located in what had been a dilapidated industrial area close to Stockholm city center, Hammarby Sjöstad was built as a comprehensive infrastructural project with sustainable alternatives for water, energy, and waste management. The district, comprising over 300 acres around the shores of Lake Hammarby, is home to some 25,000 people. The block pattern is based on the traditional urban fabric of Stockholm while the architecture is decidedly modern.
The purpose of investigating this precedent was to interest the students in sustainable features they might incorporate into their own designs, both for Paradise as a whole …

Engineering Injectable, Self-Assembling 3d Vasculature, Kendyl Cohn
Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects
Our laboratory (The Heylman Lab) is developing strategies for engineering tissue outside of the body. All tissues in the body receive nutrients and remove waste via an intricate network of blood vessels called the circulatory system. Like native tissues, all engineered tissues require this blood vessel transport system to properly mimic the in vivo tissue environment. Therefore, the aim of this project is to grow three-dimensional networks of blood vessels in vitro. These vessel networks will provide the foundation for tissue-on-a-chip systems when embedded in microfluidic chips being developed by other members of the lab. The scope of this project …

Microfluidics channels as small as 50 μm in width were produced via extrusionbased 3D printing. Multi-layered, multi-electrode devices were fabricated with inlaid conductive filament. Electrodes were used for simple electroanalysis of proteins. Prototyping of microfluidics devices via extrusion-based 3D printing may ultimately allow for an easy, cost-effective, high-throughput, high-resolution, and single-step method of rapidly prototyping electronic microfluidic devices, principally suited for use in diagnostics applications.
Elucidating The Structure-Function Relationship Of Human Protein Kinase Mek1, Rebecca Lee, Leandre Ravatt
Elucidating The Structure-Function Relationship Of Human Protein Kinase Mek1, Rebecca Lee, Leandre Ravatt
Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects
MEK1 is an ideal drug target for the therapeutic treatment of cancerous mutations that occur in the MAPK phosphorylation cascade, one of the most common cell proliferation signaling pathways. The study of the specific phosphorylation event between MEK1 and its only known substrate ERK2 has previously been limited due to the difficulty in obtaining the active phosphorylated form phospho-MEK1. Our study aims to overcome this barrier by utilizing the novel technology of the expanded genetic code to produce site-specifically phosphorylated proteins. In order to elucidate the structure-function relationships of MEK1, we are pursuing a hypothesisdriven, structure-guided approach based on conserved …
