Hydrogeochemical Aspects Of Surface Mine Reclamation In The Northern Great Plains, Gerald H. Groenewold, Robert D. Koob

Studies of several coal-mining sites in western North Dakota have resulted in the development of a hydrogeochemical model which accounts for the observed chemical characteristics of subsurface water in undisturbed settings. Critical hydrogeochemical processes include sulfide oxidation, gypsum precipitation and dissolution, carbonate mineral dissolution and cation exchange.

In the semi-arid climate of western North Dakota, the near-surface several meters of the landscape is constantly subjected to alternate wetting/drying. This mechanism is the key to hydrogeochemical evolution of both pore water in the rooting zone and subsurface water that eventually reaches the water table.

New Species Of Pectis (Asteraceae) From The West Indies, Mexico, And South America, David J. Keil

Biological Sciences

Four new species of Peetis are described: P. ericifolia from Barbuda, P. luckoviae from west-central Mexico, P. arida from Ecuador and Peru, and P. cajamarcana from Peru. Chromosome counts for P. erieifolza (n = 48) and P. luekoviae (n = 12) are presented. Relationships of the newly described taxa are discussed.

Fe3O4 Precipitation In Magnetotactic Bacteria, Richard B. Frankel, Georgia C. Papaefthymiou, Richard P. Blakemore, Wendy O'Brien

Using Mössbauer resonance spectroscopy of ⁵⁷Fe, we have determined the nature and distribution of major iron compounds in the magnetotactic bacterium Aquaspirillum magnetotacticum. In addition to magnetite (Fe₃O₄), cells contained a low-density hydrous ferric oxide, a high-density hydrous ferric oxide (ferrihydrite), and ferrous iron. Analysis at different temperatures of whole cells harvested early and late in growth, of mutant cells unable to synthesize magnetite, and of cell fractions enriched in ⁵⁷Fe indicated that Fe₃O₄ precipitation resulted from partial reduction of the high-density hydrous ferric oxide precursor.

The components of a turfgrass ecosystem, including plants, an intervening layer of thatch and the underlying soil, influence the fate of topically applied urea fertilizer. The loss of urea N by ammonia volatilization may be governed by the rate of urea hydrolysis. The main objective of this study was to determine the extent of urease activity associated with turfgrass plant tissue, thatch, and the underlying soil. This information may help elucidate the mechanism of ammonia loss following urea application. A Black Marlin, Makaira Indica, From The Early Pleistocene Of The Philippines And The Zoogeography Of Istiophorid Billfishes, Harry L. Fierstine, Bruce J. Welton

Biological Sciences

A nearly complete articulated head (including pectoral and pelvic girdles and fins) was collected from an Early Pleistocene, upper bathyal, volcanic ash deposit on Tambac Island, Northwest Central Luzon, Philippines. The specimen was positively identified because of its general resemblance to other large marlins and by its rigid pectoral fin, a characteristic feature of the black marlin. This is the first fossil billfish described from Asia and the first living species of billfish positively identified in the fossil record.
