Spatial And Temporal Variation In Growth Rate Of Blue Rockfish (Sebastes Mystinus) In Nearshore Central California Determined Using A Physiological Biomarker, Ellie M. Brauer
Master's Theses
Identifying areas of high fish population productivity is crucial for protecting habitats essential to fish growth and reproduction and, ultimately, for achieving sustainable fisheries. Historically, evaluations of habitat quality have relied heavily on linking spatial variation in fish abundance to environmental parameters such as substrate category, depth, or bathymetry. That approach, however, assumes that areas of high fish abundance best support growth and reproduction of a species and thus may fail to detect spatial or temporal variation in population attributes, such as somatic growth rate, which can be central to recruitment success and survival. In this study, we employed a …

Optimization Of A Novel Nipam-Based Thermoresponsive Copolymer For Intramuscular Injection As A Myoblast Delivery Vehicle To Combat Peripheral Artery Occlusive Disease, Quentin R. Klueter
Master's Theses
There is a need for a minimally invasive delivery method to enable cell therapies to combat peripheral artery occlusive disease (PAOD) in end stage patients. Myoblasts show promise as a cell mediated therapy but warrant an improved delivery method to increase cell retention in the region of interest because of their adherent nature, relative to previously used BM-MNC’s that are non-adherent. Contemporary issues with achieving successful cell therapies of vasculature can be mainly characterized by the lack of clinical translation from promising animal studies and absence of cell delivery scaffolding. Naturally, polymers have been widely experimented with as grafts to …

Impact Of Primary Myoblasts On Macrophage Polarization In-Vitro, Olivia Welch
Master's Theses
Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is characterized by the development of atherosclerotic plaques on arterial walls, leading to the narrowing of blood vessels, resulting in ischemia in the downstream tissue. In the United States, 12% of the adult population is affected by PAD and its related symptoms. Current surgical revascularization techniques can be effective in part of the patient population, but there is a need for other options. Alternatively, collateral blood vessels, or natural bypass arteries, enlarge to increase blood flow to the ischemic tissue in a process called arteriogenesis, which has been studied as a therapeutic option. Cell-based therapies, such …
Santa Margarita Watershed Sanitary Survey Update For 2021, Timothy Chen
Santa Margarita Watershed Sanitary Survey Update For 2021, Timothy Chen
Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and Management Projects
The Watershed Sanitary Survey update evaluates the water quality of a groundwater aquifer utilized by the community of Santa Margarita as a municipal water source through Well No. 4. It was last conducted in 2011. The Watershed Sanitary Survey is a regulatory document for the compliance of Santa Margarita’s water system with the Surface Water Treatment Rule (SWTR), aimed at protecting the public from any sources of drinking water contamination. The unprecedented level of drought occurring over the last five years could spell unknown changes to the water quality of the aquifer, possibly increasing the concentration of pollutants. This poses …

Verification Of A Digital Microfluidics Platform, Karanpartap Singh
Electrical Engineering
The electrowetting effect describes the change in contact angle between a solid surface and electrolyte in response to an applied electric potential difference. Given a planar array of individually-actuated electrodes, electrowetting can be used to transport, mix, and separate picoliter to microliter-sized droplets of liquid on a dielectric layer. Applications of this phenomenon range from lab-on-a-chip and other microfluidic devices to liquid lenses capable of altering their topology and focus within milliseconds.
This project extends prior work simulating the dependence of droplet velocity on actuation voltage and demonstrates observed physics on a physical platform. The simulation portion of this project …

Our group's task was to redesign this funnel to minimize fluid loss and, overall, increase efficiency and effectiveness.
Lytic Bacteriophages And Lactic Acid As Processing Aids Against Salmonella Spp. And Escherichia Coli O157:H7 On Marinated And Tenderized Pork Loins, Sherita Li
Master's Theses
Within the last decade, pork consumption has steadily increased and continues to be the most consumed meat globally. However, pathogenic bacterial strains resistant to antibiotics have also been increasingly found in pig farms, animals, and the environment. Bacterial food poisoning cases due to Salmonella spp. and Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157:H7 appear to be linked with a variety of pork products. The meat industry has recognized that research is needed to combat the multi-drug resistance in foodborne pathogens with alternative methods of control. This study evaluated the effects of both E. coli- and Salmonella-specific lytic bacteriophages and …
Fire Effects In Montane Meadows, Rosie Deak
Fire Effects In Montane Meadows, Rosie Deak
Master's Theses
The impact of forest fires on downstream meadow communities across California is of great ecological interest, as meadows are an important source of biodiversity in this region. Over a century of fire suppression has led to increased forest stand densities, which in turn has resulted in less water availability due to increased transpiration of densely growing trees. This potentially has left less available water for downstream plant communities in meadows. If true, then high mortality wildfires in surrounding forest are predicted to lead to an increase in available downstream moisture where obligate and facultative-wetland taxa increase and dry-adapted upland taxa …

Strategies To Promote Responsive Bottle-Feeding In Wic Predict Less Frequent Use Of Food To Soothe And Healthier Weight Status For Infants With Negative Temperaments, Alison K. Ventura, Shannon E. Whaley
Kinesiology and Public Health
Background: Infants with greater temperamental negative affectivity are at higher risk for overfeeding and excess weight gain.
Objective: To examine whether strategies to promote responsive bottle-feeding within WIC promoted healthier maternal feeding practices and infant weight status among infants with greater negative affectivity.
Methods: Secondary analysis of data from a matched-pair cluster randomized trial. Policy, systems and environmental change (PSE) strategies to promote responsive bottle-feeding were implemented at three WIC clinics; these clinics were compared with three matched control clinics. Linear mixed models tested whether infant negative affectivity interacted with PSE strategies to predict feeding and weight outcomes when infants …

Integration Of Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy For Multichannel Cell Culture Measurement, Conard Chan
Integration Of Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy For Multichannel Cell Culture Measurement, Conard Chan
Master's Theses
ELECTROCHEMICAL IMPEDANCE SPECTROSCOPY (EIS) has been widely used to study the electrical properties of biological material due to its non-invasive nature and experimental reliability. However, most of the precision impedance analyzers used in EIS only provide single- or two-channel measurements which are inadequate for larger-scale multiplexed measurements, such as those found in modern microfluidic cell culture experiments. The Biomedical Microsystems Laboratory has developed a 16-channel cell culture platform with integrated electrode arrays for monitoring cell growth and electrical properties (i.e., the so-called “electrical phenotype”). In this paper, a system consisting of a 16-channel solid-state analog multiplexer (MUX)paired with a low-cost, …
Effects Of Intertidal Position On The Capacity For Anaerobic Metabolism And Thermal Stress Response In The Common Acorn Barnacle, Balanus Glandula, Kyra Anderson
Master's Theses
Intertidal habitats are characterized by dynamic, tidally-driven fluctuations in abiotic and biotic factors. Many of the environmental stressors that vary across the intertidal (e.g., temperature, oxygen, food availability, predation pressure) are strong drivers of metabolic rate in ectotherms. As such, we predicted that there may be pronounced differences in the metabolic and stress physiology of conspecific sessile invertebrates occupying at different relative tidal heights. The common acorn barnacle Balanus glandula represents an ideal model organism in which to investigate the possibility of tidal height-dependent physiological differences, owing to their wide distribution in the intertidal zone and their eurytolerant nature. In …

Hierarchical Classification Of Deep-Sea Videos, Lubomir Stanchev, Hanson Egbert
Computer Science and Software Engineering
This research is based on previous research that proposes the use of AI algorithms to automatically annotate deep-sea videos [1]. Regardless of whether a deep-sea video is annotated automatically or by a human expert, some frames are difficult to annotate because one or more objects may be ambiguous to interpret. For example, the Funiculina and Umbellula Lindahli are two types of sea pens that are difficult to distinguish. Similarly, an object may be easily identified as a fish, but the type of fish may be difficult to determine. For these types of circumstances, we propose a hierarchical classification algorithm that …

Synthetic Design And Anisotropic Conductivities Of Polymeric Mixed Ion- Electron Conductors, Nika Bondar, Abigail Slimp, Patrick Gruoner, Jason Lin
Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects
Our project documented, in extensive detail, the liquid crystalline (LC) assembly pathway from solution to solid state in the supramolecular complexes of the mixed ionic-electronic conducting polymers (MIECPs) prepared from carboxylated poly(3-alkylthiophene) and ionic liquid surfactant. Using UV-visible spectroscopy we have shown that the complexation is accompanied by the surfactochromism showing colorimetric response and conformational transitions as a function of the IL surfactant mole ratio. Additionally, we have demonstrated via Polarized Optical Microscopy (POM), that the equimolar solution exhibits rodlike conformation and its hydrogel spontaneously forms a 2D smectic LC mesophase with a lamellar periodicity. Defect-free LC domains were produced …

The Question Of Veganism, The Dangers Of Moral Extensionism, And A Pragmatist Ecofeminist Alternative, Erin Mckenna
The Question Of Veganism, The Dangers Of Moral Extensionism, And A Pragmatist Ecofeminist Alternative, Erin Mckenna
Between the Species
In this paper I argue that the framework of moral extensionism relies on human exceptionalism and human centeredness. I discuss the dangers of human exceptionalism and human centeredness using the work of ecofeminist philosophers Val Plumwood, Carol Adams, Lori Gruen, A. Breeze Harper, and Lisa Kemmerer. These ecofeminists each articulate alternative approaches to human relations with other animal beings. There are tensions among these alternatives, though, and I use a pragmatist perspective to interrogate their different positions on how other animal beings should or should not figure into the diets of human beings. I will argue that we need a …
Extending The Impairment Argument To Sentient Non-Human Animals, Christopher A. Bobier
Extending The Impairment Argument To Sentient Non-Human Animals, Christopher A. Bobier
Between the Species
I defend a new argument against raising and killing sentient non-human animals for food: It is immoral to non-lethally impair sentient non-human animals for pleasure, and since raising and killing sentient animals for gustatory pleasure impairs them to a much greater degree, that also is immoral. This argument is structurally analogous to Perry Hendricks’s impairment argument for the immorality of abortion. Proponents of the anti-abortion argument have to be, on grounds of moral consistency, proponents of the anti-meat eating argument: the very same considerations they appeal to to justify their anti-abortion impairment argument apply to the impairment argument against raising …

Rigid Aggregation Of Inclusions Embedded In Quasi 2d Fluids, Natalie Xochitl Ryan
Rigid Aggregation Of Inclusions Embedded In Quasi 2d Fluids, Natalie Xochitl Ryan
Physics
Diffusion is a transport process common in several biological systems. In this process particles of different species mix together through random (stochastic) motion at molecular length scales. Diffusion in fluids is unique as the coupling of the flow and fluid have been found to produce giant concentration fluctuations. The molecular length scale of these concentration fluctuations are magnitudes larger than the movement of the particles themselves, earning them the title “giant”. The diffusion of particles in bio-membranes displays a combination of 2D and 3D hydrodynamic properties; the movements of the particles are restricted to the plane of the membrane and …
Map-Gan: Unsupervised Learning Of Inverse Problems, Brandon S. Campanella
Map-Gan: Unsupervised Learning Of Inverse Problems, Brandon S. Campanella
Master's Theses
In this paper we outline a novel method for training a generative adversarial network based denoising model from an exclusively corrupted and unpaired dataset of images. Our model can learn without clean data or corrupted image pairs, and instead only requires that the noise distribution is able to be expressed analytically and that the noise at each pixel is independent. We utilize maximum a posteriori estimation as the underlying solution framework, optimizing over the analytically expressed noise generating distribution as the likelihood and employ the GAN as the prior. We then evaluate our method on several popular datasets of varying …
