Magnetite Morphology And Life On Mars, Peter R. Buseck, Rafal E. Dunin-Borkowski, Bertrand Devouard, Richard B. Frankel, Martha R. Mccartney, Paul A. Midgley, Mihály Pósfai, Mathew Weyland Nov 2001

Magnetite Morphology And Life On Mars, Peter R. Buseck, Rafal E. Dunin-Borkowski, Bertrand Devouard, Richard B. Frankel, Martha R. Mccartney, Paul A. Midgley, Mihály Pósfai, Mathew Weyland

Physics

Nanocrystals of magnetite (Fe3O4) in a meteorite from Mars provide the strongest, albeit controversial, evidence for the former presence of extraterrestrial life. The morphological and size resemblance of the crystals from meteorite ALH84001 to crystals formed by certain terrestrial bacteria has been used in support of the biological origin of the extraterrestrial minerals. By using tomographic and holographic methods in a transmission electron microscope, we show that the three-dimensional shapes of such nanocrystals can be defined, that the detailed morphologies of individual crystals from three bacterial strains differ, and that none uniquely match those reported from …

Re-Evaluating Nadph-Diaphorase Histochemistry As An Indicator Of Nitric Oxide Synthase: An Examination Of The Olfactory System Of Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus Kisutch), Sean C. Lema, Gabrielle A. Nevitt Nov 2001

Re-Evaluating Nadph-Diaphorase Histochemistry As An Indicator Of Nitric Oxide Synthase: An Examination Of The Olfactory System Of Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus Kisutch), Sean C. Lema, Gabrielle A. Nevitt

Biological Sciences

The NADPH-diaphorase (NADPH-d) histochemical technique is commonly used to localize the nitric oxide (NO)-producing enzyme NO synthase (NOS) in neural tissues. In the olfactory tissues of vertebrates, however, NADPH-d staining can be present without the detection of NOS by other methods. We used pharmacological controls to determine whether NADPH-d staining was indicative of NOS in olfactory tissues from coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch). We also compared NADPH-d staining with immunoreactivity to NOS. NADPH-d staining localized to the olfactory epithelium and to the glomerular layer of the olfactory bulb. Two NOS inhibitors, L-N-nitroarginine and L-N-methyl-L-arginine, failed …

Shared Scientific Thinking In Everyday Parent-Child Activity, Kevin Crowley, Maureen A. Callanan, Jennifer Jipson, Jodi Galco, Karen Topping, Jeff Shrager Nov 2001

Shared Scientific Thinking In Everyday Parent-Child Activity, Kevin Crowley, Maureen A. Callanan, Jennifer Jipson, Jodi Galco, Karen Topping, Jeff Shrager

Psychology and Child Development

Current accounts of the development of scientific reasoning focus on individual children's ability to coordinate the collection and evaluation of evidence with the creation of theories to explain the evidence. This observational study of parent–child interactions in a children's museum demonstrated that parents shape and support children's scientific thinking in everyday, nonobligatory activity. When children engaged an exhibit with parents, their exploration of evidence was observed to be longer, broader, and more focused on relevant comparisons than children who engaged the exhibit without their parents. Parents were observed to talk to children about how to select and encode appropriate evidence …

Whence Meiosis?, Anne M. Villeneuve, Kenneth J. Hillers Sep 2001

Whence Meiosis?, Anne M. Villeneuve, Kenneth J. Hillers

Biological Sciences

Sexual reproduction predominates among eukaryotic organisms on our planet. While debate continues over why this should be so, burgeoning genomic and functional information now allows us to begin to think reasonably about some of the events that may have occurred to make sex possible in the first place.

Rapid Appraisal Process And Benchmarking, Charles M. Burt, Stuart W. Styles

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

This WORD document [Rapid Appraisal Process (RAP) and Benchmarking] provides an explanation of the Rapid Appraisal Process (RAP), as well as a brief explanation of Benchmarking and the data that must be collected for both endeavors. This document also provides an explanation the EXCEL documents that are used by persons during the RAP. An EXCEL spreadsheet (with 12 internal worksheets) is provided twice:
1. Rapid Appraisal and Benchmarking BLANK.xls
2. Rapid Appraisal and Benchmarking EXAMPLE.xls
As the names suggest, the EXAMPLE has data in it so that users can examine an example before entering data in a blank spreadsheet.
