Variation In Nuclear Dna Content Across Environmental Gradients: A Quantile Regression Analysis, Charles A. Knight, David D. Ackerly Jan 2002

Variation In Nuclear Dna Content Across Environmental Gradients: A Quantile Regression Analysis, Charles A. Knight, David D. Ackerly

Biological Sciences

The nuclear DNA content of angiosperms varies by several orders of magnitude. Previous studies suggest that variation in 2C DNA content (i.e. the amount of DNA in G1 phase nuclei, also referred to as the 2C-value) is correlated with environmental factors, but there are conflicting reports in the literature concerning the nature of these relationships. We examined variation in 2C DNA content for 401 species in the ecologically diverse California flora in relation to the mean July maximum temperature, January minimum temperature, and annual precipitation within the geographical ranges of these species. Species with small 2C-values predominate in all environments. …

Calorimetric Study Of Block-Copolymers Of Poly(N-Butyl Acrylate) And Gradient Poly(N-Butyl Acrylate-Co-Methyl Methacrylate), A I. Buzin, M Pyda, P Costanzo, K Matyjaszewski, B Wunderlich Jan 2002

Calorimetric Study Of Block-Copolymers Of Poly(N-Butyl Acrylate) And Gradient Poly(N-Butyl Acrylate-Co-Methyl Methacrylate), A I. Buzin, M Pyda, P Costanzo, K Matyjaszewski, B Wunderlich

Chemistry and Biochemistry

The nanophase separation in diblock and triblock copolymers consisting of immiscible poly(n-butyl acrylate) (block A) and gradient copolymers of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and n-butyl acrylate (n BA) (block M/A) were investigated by means of their heat capacity, Cp, as a function of the composition of the blocks M/A and temperature. In all copolymers studied, both blocks are represented by their Cp and glass transition temperature, Tg, as well as the broadening of the transition-temperature range. The low-temperature transition of the blocks A is always close to that of the …

Cal Poly Land: A Field Guide, Steven Marx Jan 2002

Cal Poly Land: A Field Guide, Steven Marx

English

This book is about the “community to which we belong”–we, the students, faculty and staff of Cal Poly University and our neighbors. Cal Poly Land encompasses nearly 10,000 acres in four large parcels--two in San Luis Obispo county, and two in Santa Cruz county--making us the second largest university landholder in California and one of the largest in the nation. This land comprises one of Poly's most valuable assets. Its “outdoor teaching and learning facilities” provide laboratories for education and research, house ecosystems and lifeforms, grow food and fiber, inspire recreation and renewal, and remain our legacy from past to …

Antimicrobial Activity Of Plants Collected From Serpentine Outcrops In Sri Lanka, Nishanta Rajakaruna, Cory S. Harris, G. H. N. Towers Jan 2002

Antimicrobial Activity Of Plants Collected From Serpentine Outcrops In Sri Lanka, Nishanta Rajakaruna, Cory S. Harris, G. H. N. Towers

Biological Sciences

Thirty-two plant species collected from serpentine (ultramafic) soils in Sri Lanka were screened for antimicrobial properties against three Gram-positive and two Gramnegative bacteria, a non-acid fast bacterium, and the yeast, Candida albicans. Methanol extracts of 29 species belonging to 12 families were active against at least one microorganism. Activity against the Gram-positive and non-acid fast bacteria was common, however, only two taxa, Lantana camara L. (Verbenaceae) and a species of Phyllanthus L. (Euphorbiaceae), were active against the Gram-negative bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa. None of the species was active against the other Gram-negative bacterium, Escherichia coli, or C. albicans. Photoactivity was observed …

Longitudinal Variation In Muscle Protein Expression And Contraction Kinetics Of Largemouth Bass Axial Muscle, Tierney M. Thys, Jason M. Blank, David J. Coughlin, Fred Schachat Dec 2001

Longitudinal Variation In Muscle Protein Expression And Contraction Kinetics Of Largemouth Bass Axial Muscle, Tierney M. Thys, Jason M. Blank, David J. Coughlin, Fred Schachat

Biological Sciences

The present study investigates muscle protein expression in largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides through intra- and intermyomeric comparisons of white muscle. Using denaturing SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, muscle protein expression in the arm and cone regions of sequential myomeres was compared for three bass. Low percentage (4.75 %) polyacrylamide-SDS gels and cyanogen bromide (CNBr) peptide mapping revealed no obvious intramyomeric differences between the myosin heavy chains of the arm and cone regions. Electrophoresis of myofibrils and muscle homogenates on higher percentage gels also failed to demonstrate any significant differences between arm and cone regions in either the myosin light chains or any …

Effects Of Artisanal Fishing On Marine Communities In The Galápagos Islands, Benjamin I. Ruttenberg Dec 2001

Effects Of Artisanal Fishing On Marine Communities In The Galápagos Islands, Benjamin I. Ruttenberg

Biological Sciences

The Galápagos Islands harbor some of the least impacted marine ecosystems in the tropics, but there are indications that local artisanal fishing is affecting exploited marine communities. To quantify these effects, I sampled communities of fishes and sea urchins at a number of heavily fished and lightly fished sites throughout the central islands of the archipelago. Sites were selected based on information collected as part of a local fisheries monitoring study and standardized across a number of abiotic factors. Abundance and biomass of the primary target species were significantly lower in the heavily fished sites than in the lightly fished …

A Theory Of Volumetric Growth For Compressible Elastic Biological Materials, Stephen M. Klisch, Timothy J. Van Dyke, Anne Hoger Dec 2001

A Theory Of Volumetric Growth For Compressible Elastic Biological Materials, Stephen M. Klisch, Timothy J. Van Dyke, Anne Hoger

Mechanical Engineering

A general theory of volumetric growth for compressible elastic materials is presented. The authors derive a complete set of governing equations in the present configuration for an elastic material undergoing a continuous growth process. In particular, they obtain two constitutive restrictions from a work-energy principle. First, the authors show that a growing elastic material behaves as a Green-elastic material. Second, they obtain an expression that relates the stress power due to growth to the rate of energy change due to growth. Then, the governing equations for a small increment of growth are derived from the more general theory. The equations …
