Flexural Behavior And Failure Mode Assessment Of Concrete-Encased Steel Beams Constructed With Experimental Cardboard Formwork, Luke Robert Jones, Drew Takeshi Kawaguchi

This project investigated the flexural behavior of a concrete-encased W8×13 steel beam detailed without conventional longitudinal reinforcement and constructed using an experimental cardboard/Masonite formwork system. A bare steel control specimen and an encased composite specimen were tested under identical loading conditions to evaluate the effects of concrete confinement and welded transverse reinforcement on lateral-torsional buckling behavior. Results showed that the encased specimen remained laterally stable and developed flexural cracking and concrete crushing rather than the lateral-torsional buckling observed in the control beam. This project involved the development and implementation of a four-part structural engineering workshop series for preschool-aged children at the Orfalea Children’s Center at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. The workshops were designed to introduce fundamental structural engineering concepts through age-appropriate discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on activities focused on engineering careers, structural shapes, skyscrapers, and bridges. The lessons emphasized concepts such as stability, bracing, structural loading, seismic behavior, and iterative design while encouraging collaboration, creativity, and problem solving.

On-site residential units at Thousand Hills Pet Resort currently lack ADA-compliant access, as entry is limited to small, elevated doorways that are only reachable by stairs. A deck connecting the units and providing accessible ingress and egress was designed for this senior project.

In addition to the ADA requirements, the property is expected to undergo significant redevelopment in the coming years. As a result, the deck design must not only meet accessibility needs but also be adaptable and reusable. For decades it served as a home for the Canyon’s caretakers who maintained the structures, looked over the Canyon, and helped construct student projects. After being abandoned for a variety of reasons, the structure now currently stands as an open-air pavilion.

The Tanzania Mbesese Initiative 2026 Senior Project supports a multi-year design-build effort to establish the Same Polytechnic College in Same, Tanzania. This community faces high poverty levels and limited access to higher education, necessitating sustainable infrastructure to support tertiary education. To prepare for the upcoming July phase of construction, an eight-student Architectural Engineering team designed three practical and resilient structures: a Shade Structure, a Water Collection Structure, and a Reusable Scaffolding system. The following study employed Social Identity and Affective Polarization theories to examine how political disagreement influences students’ willingness to engage in open dialogue within higher education during a time of polarization. This study employed a simple survey distributed to a sample of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo students from all colleges. The Qualtrics survey included multiple-choice questions assessing students’ political affiliation and examining how these affiliations influenced their willingness to engage in communication with individuals holding differing views, as well as their openness to developing deeper interpersonal relationships. Plastic waste accumulation and continued reliance on fossil fuel-based polymer feedstocks remain major challenges in the plastics industry. While mechanical recycling is widely used, repeated thermal processing, contamination, and polymer degradation reduce recycled plastic quality. Chemical recycling offers an alternative by depolymerizing plastics into reusable monomers that can produce materials with properties closer to virgin plastics.

This study investigated the glycolysis of post-consumer poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) using ethylene glycol to produce bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET). Students in the Special Day Class at Oceano Elementary School face challenges participating in traditional gardening activities due to mobility and accessibility limitations. To address this need, a wheelchair-accessible Rolling Garden Box was designed and constructed to provide an engaging, hands-on learning experience that promotes independence and cause-and-effect learning. The system consists of a wooden box supported by a steel frame with locking caster wheels, a switch-activated irrigation system. This study evaluates whether centralized Greek housing near Cal Poly could serve as a long-term planning solution for reducing neighborhood conflict, improving student housing opportunities, and creating a more organized environment for fraternity and sorority life. The construction industry faces mounting pressure to adopt more efficient building technologies. 3D-printed concrete (3DCP) has emerged as a promising alternative to wood-frame wall systems, offering reduced labor costs, shorter schedules, and lower long-term maintenance expenses. This study evaluates the economic feasibility of 3DCP versus traditional framing across three project scales — single-family (2K SF), multifamily (20K SF), and large development (100K SF) — using mixed-methods combining quantitative cost data with qualitative industry interviews. Results indicate 3DCP becomes cost-competitive at approximately 20,000 SF of wall area, with a decisive advantage at 100K+ SF ($26–$34/SF vs. $29–$45/SF traditional). Understanding how these positions evolve is important for analyzing political discourse and democratic accountability, yet identifying such shifts at scale remains difficult.

Microalgae are a promising renewable source of biofuel due to their high lipid content and rapid growth rates; however, algae cells must be electroporated (lysed) to release these lipids. The system developed in this project applies short (40 μs–10 ms), high-intensity (up to 33 kV/cm) pulsed electric fields (PEF) across cell membranes to enable electroporation.

Our lab-scale PEF chamber generates uniform, high-intensity electric fields using parallel-plate electrodes with sub-millimeter spacing. The system is designed to efficiently lyse microalgae cells for lipid extraction and biofuel production.

Unlike an ideal DC Power Supply, a solar panel does not operate with linear I-V Characteristics. The voltage and current characteristics of a solar panel change based on irradiance, temperature, weather conditions, and load demand. Because of these factors, solar panels do not always operate at their Maximum Power Point, which can lead to significant power losses.
