School Violence And Adolescent Suicide: Strategies For Effective Intervention, Kathryne M. Speaker, George J. Petersen
School Violence And Adolescent Suicide: Strategies For Effective Intervention, Kathryne M. Speaker, George J. Petersen
Graduate Studies in Education
The public school system in the United States has always presented itself as representing the hallmarks of vital socialization, equality in education, hope for the future and sense of community. This picture has changed drastically in the past 20 years. Chaos seems to be replacing community. This fact is only too apparent when we read recent accounts of the tragedies that have unfolded in the past 3 years in Pearl, Mississippi, West Paducah, Kentucky, Jonesboro, Arkansas, Springfield, Oregon or Littleton, Colorado. As a result of the deteriorating social environment and a significant growing fiscal crisis faced by our nation’s schools, children …

Branch Transition Rate: A New Metric For Improved Branch Classification Analysis, Michael Haungs, Phil Sallee, Matthew Farrens
Branch Transition Rate: A New Metric For Improved Branch Classification Analysis, Michael Haungs, Phil Sallee, Matthew Farrens
Computer Science and Software Engineering
Recent studies have shown significantly improved branch prediction through the use of branch classification. By separating static branches into groups, or classes, with similar dynamic behavior, predictors may be selected that are best suited for each class. Previous methods have classified branches according to taken rate (or bias). We propose a new metric for branch classification: branch transition rate, which is defined as the number of times a branch changes direction between taken and not taken during execution. We show that transition rate is a more appropriate indicator of branch behavior than taken rate for determining predictor performance. When both …

Ultrasonic Testing For Compacted Clayey Soils, Nazli Yesiller, Gokhan Inci, Carol J. Miller
Ultrasonic Testing For Compacted Clayey Soils, Nazli Yesiller, Gokhan Inci, Carol J. Miller
Civil and Environmental Engineering
In this study, tests were conducted to investigate the use of ultrasonic methods to determine compaction characteristics of clayey soils. In particular, through-transmission test method was used to determine P-wave velocities in compacted clayey soils. Effects of soil type and compaction conditions on velocity were investigated. Tests were conducted on three soils that had low, medium, and high plasticity. Soils were prepared at water contents ranging from dry to wet of optimum using standard and modified compaction efforts. It was observed that velocity increased with increasing compactive effort and decreasing plasticity and clay content. Moreover, the variation of ultrasonic velocity …
A Multi-Case Investigation Of Environmental Legitimation In Annual Reports, Arline Savage, A. J. Cataldo, Jeff Rowlands
A Multi-Case Investigation Of Environmental Legitimation In Annual Reports, Arline Savage, A. J. Cataldo, Jeff Rowlands
Accounting
In this chapter, a legitimacy theory framework for corporate environmental disclosure is empirically investigated, using a multi-case research design. Legitimation strategies in the 1991-1995 annual reports of two Canadian-owned pulp and paper companies are explored. The findings support legitimacy theory as an explanation for voluntary environmental disclosure in annual reports.
The Relationship Between Gender Social Identity And Support For Feminism, Shawn Meghan Burn, Roger Aboud, Carey Moyles
The Relationship Between Gender Social Identity And Support For Feminism, Shawn Meghan Burn, Roger Aboud, Carey Moyles
Psychology and Child Development
This study is an application of social identity theory to feminist consciousness and activism. For women, strong gender identifications may enhance support for equality struggles, whereas for men, they may contribute to backlashes against feminism. University students (N = 276), primarily Euroamerican, completed a measure of gender self-esteem (GSE, that part of one’s self-concept derived from one’s gender), and two measures of feminism. High GSE in women and low GSE in men were related to support for feminism. Consistent with past research, women were more supportive of feminism than men, and in both genders, support for feminist ideas was greater …

Heterosexuals' Use Of 'Fag' And 'Queer' To Deride One Another: A Contributor To Heterosexism And Stigma, Shawn Meghan Burn
Heterosexuals' Use Of 'Fag' And 'Queer' To Deride One Another: A Contributor To Heterosexism And Stigma, Shawn Meghan Burn
Psychology and Child Development
This paper is on heterosexuals’ use of words such as "fag" and "queer" to refer to one another in an insulting manner. This behavior perpetuates heterosexism and the stigmatization of gays. Two hundred and fifty-seven university students (73% Euro-American) served as participants. Males exhibited more anti-gay prejudice and anti-gay behavior than females. Heterosexual males frequently used words such as "fag" and "queer" to put one another down. Anti-homosexual prejudice was predictive of anti-gay behavior. However, approximately half of those who engaged in the behavior were not strongly anti-homosexual. For these individuals, the behavior may win approval from their social group. …

Technology In Engineering Education: What Do The Faculty Know (And Want) Anyway?, John C. Chen, Michael Ellis, Jason Lockhart, Sameer Hamoush, Catherine E. Brawner
Mechanical Engineering
We have conducted a survey of engineering faculty at the eight SUCCEED coalition universities to identify the training needs and present levels of experience with various technologies. The results of that survey are presented in this paper.
The most surprising finding from the survey is that, despite the wide differences in the Coalition’s colleges of engineering (in size, student demographics, and research-teaching emphasis, for example), the survey results are similar for all campuses. This is important in that it implies that the survey results may be widely applicable to other universities, even given the disparate state of technology integration and …
