The Big Short, Elizabeth Armon Mar 2016

The Big Short, Elizabeth Armon

Communication Studies

The Big Short (McKay, 2015), adapted from the non-fiction novel The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine by Michael Lewis (2010), follows three separate but parallel stories leading up to the United States housing crisis of 2008. On a macro-level, the film brilliantly depicted the creation, and the ultimate burst, of the credit and housing market bubble. However, on a micro-level the audience is given an opportunity to realize and empathize with the internal struggle that many of the main characters faced as they grappled with the fact that their financial gain from shorting the market came with the caveat …

Media Bias: How The Bias Affects Public Perception Of The Media And What Can Be Done To Further Prevent Erosion Of Media-Public Relationship, Daniel Park

Journalism

The following study investigates the concept and nature of media bias and provides recommendations for those in the media in order to create a more transparent environment for journalists and the general public. This transparency is necessary for trust to be established once again between the media and the publics they serve. However, “serve” may be an inappropriate term, as the term denotes a willingness to render assistance without the thought of pay or other favorable services in return. This study realizes that the media consists largely of money-making entities, and forms such recommendations in the expectation that following the …

Our senior project involved creating a simple dating application and service. From other dating applications, we observed that the logistics of scheduling a first date are a tedious way to start a conversation with someone you've never met. The main concept of our application was that it would use user schedule availability and their favorite cafes to automatically plan optimal dates.

We started the project with the intent of...

  • Working through the entire development cycle of a large project as a team

  • Devising techniques for determining overlapping preferences, especially when handling large amounts of location and time data

Pink And Dude Chefs: Impact Of A Nutrition And Culinary Education Program With Middle School Students In An Afterschool Setting, Jessie R. Bierlich-Wesch

Master's Theses

The epidemic of adolescent obesity has become one of the greatest public health concerns in the United States. Approximately 20.5% of adolescents of both sexes aged 12-19 years are considered obese. Higher rates of obesity are evident in ethnic minority and lower income status children with the highest prevalence among Hispanic/Latino and Black populations. The causes for obesity are multifactorial in nature and highlight disparities nationwide. These factors include socioeconomic status, education, environment, availability and access to fresh fruits and vegetables, and behavior patterns. Successful intervention methods that have reduced the impact of adolescent obesity have incorporated nutrition knowledge and …

Design And Validation Of A Fall Detection Application For Ios, Connor Lewis Mosley Mar 2016

Design And Validation Of A Fall Detection Application For Ios, Connor Lewis Mosley

Master's Theses

Despite significant preventative efforts, falls continue to be a major source of morbidity and mortality among the elderly. Additionally, the fear of falling can be a major obstacle to independent living for otherwise self-sufficient individuals. This fear is significantly heightened in individuals who have sustained a fall and often results in self-imposed restrictions on mobility and exercise, causing weakening in these individuals and further exacerbating the danger. Much time has been spent developing alert systems in an attempt to mitigate these problems. Unfortunately these systems typically involve dedicated monitoring centers and therefore often come with substantial upfront and recurring costs. …

Reducing Costs In Human Assisted Speech Transcription, Justin Rovin Mar 2016

Reducing Costs In Human Assisted Speech Transcription, Justin Rovin

Master's Theses

The only official documentation of the lawmaking process at the California Legislature is unedited video recordings of committee hearings, bill texts, votes and analyses. While the bills resulting from these hearings are clear, using video recordings to understand how a bill was created is far too laborious for the average citizen. To increase public transparency, a service that provides easier access to the bill creation process was needed. In response to this need, the Digital Democracy initiative was established at Cal Poly by the Honorable Sam Blakeslee, former California State Senator and founder of the Institute for Advanced Technology and …

Semantic Document Clustering Using A Similarity Graph, Lubomir Stanchev Feb 2016

Semantic Document Clustering Using A Similarity Graph, Lubomir Stanchev

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Document clustering addresses the problem of identifying groups of similar documents without human supervision. Unlike most existing solutions that perform document clustering based on keywords matching, we propose an algorithm that considers the meaning of the terms in the documents. For example, a document that contains the words "dog" and "cat" multiple times may be placed in the same category as a document that contains the word "pet" even if the two documents share only noise words in common. Our semantic clustering algorithm is based on a similarity graph that stores the degree of semantic relationship between terms (extracted from …

The Rise And Fall Of The Patent Trolls: How They Lost The Public Relations Battle, Liz Weber Feb 2016

The Rise And Fall Of The Patent Trolls: How They Lost The Public Relations Battle, Liz Weber

Journalism

Patent trolls gained notoriety in the early 2000s as many nine- and even 10-digit patent infringement settlements made headlines. Trolls claim they are helping inventors get the compensation they deserve for their inventions, while opponents claim trolls are parasites on successful businesses who want glittering pots of gold in exchange for doing absolutely nothing. As the debate continues and parties on both sides continue to call for patent reform, the question arises: what is best of the IP overall market? And how can patent trolls utilize communications best practices to ensure their message is convincingly conveyed to key influencers who …

Review Of Slaves Of Our Affection: The Myth Of The Happy Pet, Katherine Allen Jan 2016

Review Of Slaves Of Our Affection: The Myth Of The Happy Pet, Katherine Allen

Between the Species

This article reviews Charles Danten’s Slaves of Our Affection: the Myth of the Happy Pet, outlining and evaluating Danten’s arguments for the abolition of the pet trade. The review delineates Danten’s main points; that the commodification of companion animals is antithetical to their welfare, that veterinarians, pet food manufacturers and breeders serve the dictates of the economic bottom line rather than the interests of animals, and that the majority of pet owners, while well-intentioned, are ill-equipped to meet the physiological and psychological needs of their animal companions.

The reviewer asserts that Danten’s arguments are generally successful, but suggests that …

Visual Literacy For Libraries: A Practical, Standards-Based Guide, Nicole E. Brown, Kaila Bussert, Denise Hattwig, Ann Medaille

Library Scholarship

When we step back and think about how to situate visual literacy into a library context, the word critical keeps coming up: critical thinking, critical viewing, critical using, critical making, and the list goes on. To understand our approach, start with your own practice, add images, and see where it takes you.

Do you encourage students to think critically as they research?

How can you extend this experience to images?

Do you embrace critical information literacy?

Can you bring visual content to enrich that experience?

Do you teach students to critically evaluate sources?

How can you expand that practice to …

Label-Free Imaging Of Metabolism And Oxidative Stress In Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Cardiomyocytes, Rupsa Datta, Christopher M. Heylman, Steven C. George, Enrico Gratton Jan 2016

Label-Free Imaging Of Metabolism And Oxidative Stress In Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Cardiomyocytes, Rupsa Datta, Christopher M. Heylman, Steven C. George, Enrico Gratton

Biomedical Engineering

In this work we demonstrate a label-free optical imaging technique to assess metabolic status and oxidative stress in human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes by two-photon fluorescence lifetime imaging of endogenous fluorophores. Our results show the sensitivity of this method to detect shifts in metabolism and oxidative stress in the cardiomyocytes upon pathological stimuli of hypoxia and cardiotoxic drugs. This non-invasive imaging technique could prove beneficial for drug development and screening, especially for in vitro cardiac models created from stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes and to study the pathogenesis of cardiac diseases and therapy.
