Theory Of Transient Streaming Potentials In Coupled Unconfined Aquifer-Unsaturated Zone Flow To A Well, Bwalya Malama
Theory Of Transient Streaming Potentials In Coupled Unconfined Aquifer-Unsaturated Zone Flow To A Well, Bwalya Malama
Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences
A semianalytical solution is presented for transient streaming potentials associated with flow to a pumping well in an unconfined aquifer, taking into account the effect of flow in the unsaturated zone above the water table. Flow in the unsaturated zone is modeled with a linearized form of Richards' equation using an exponential model for soil moisture retention and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity. Archie's law is invoked for unsaturated electrical conductivity. The unsaturated electrokinetic coupling coefficient is modeled with a decaying exponential, where the maximum value is at and below the water table. The coupled flow and electrokinetic problem is solved using …
Hidden Trends In Nfl Data, Scott Santor
Hidden Trends In Nfl Data, Scott Santor
Statistics
This is an analysis on National Football League (NFL) data for the 2013-2014 regular season. The main goal is to find hidden trends in game data that can ultimately determine which factors are statistically significant to award a team with their ultimate objective, a win.
The main response variable to be examined is total wins throughout the regular season, and an alternative dependent variable is spread; the difference between a team’s points scored, and points against. Spread is analyzed to provide a different quantitative response variable that can be both positive and negative.
Game data was gathered from ESPN.com box …
Applied Mass Properties Identification Method To The Cal Poly's Spacecraft Simulator, Long H. Dam
Applied Mass Properties Identification Method To The Cal Poly's Spacecraft Simulator, Long H. Dam
Master's Theses
The Cal Poly Spacecraft Simulator is currently being developed for future testing and verifying theoretical control applications. This paper details the effort to balance the platform and remove undesired external torque from the system using System Identification technique developed by Patrick Healy. Since the relationship between the input and output of the system is linear, the least square method is proposed to identify the mass properties and location of center of mass of the system. The tests use four sine wave generators that are out of phase with different amplitudes as the inputs to excite various structural modes of the …
A Boxer's Punch, Jacob A. Ekegren
A Boxer's Punch, Jacob A. Ekegren
Physics
For over a year now, I have been interested in the sport of boxing. This fascination led me to explore what occurs to a human head upon impact from a boxer’s punch. It is known that a knockout occurs when blood circulation to the brain is compressed. This compression results from the sudden acceleration and deceleration of the head. Therefore, the primary focus of this experiment explores the relative effort necessary to cause significant movement to a head about a neck.

Modeling And Experimental Methods To Predict Oxygen Distribution In Bone Defects Following Cell Transplantation, Christopher M. Heylman, Sharon Santoso, Melissa D. Krebs, Gerald M. Saidel, Eben Alsberg, George F. Muschler
Biomedical Engineering
We have developed a mathematical model that allows simulation of oxygen distribution in a bone defect as a tool to explore the likely effects of local changes in cell concentration, defect size or geometry, local oxygen delivery with oxygen-generating biomaterials (OGBs), and changes in the rate of oxygen consumption by cells within a defect. Experimental data for the oxygen release rate from an OGB and the oxygen consumption rate of a transplanted cell population are incorporated into the model. With these data, model simulations allow prediction of spatiotemporal oxygen concentration within a given defect and the sensitivity of oxygen tension …

Classification Of Plot-Level Fire-Caused Tree Mortality In A Redwood Forest Using Digital Orthophotography And Lidar, Brian D. Bishop, Brian C. Dietterick, Russell A. White, Tom B. Mastin
Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences
Aerial and satellite imagery are widely used to assess the severity and impact of wildfires. Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is a newer remote sensing technology that has demonstrated utility in measuring vegetation structure. Combined use of imagery and LiDAR may improve the assessment of wildfire impacts compared to imagery alone. Estimation of tree mortality at the plot scale could serve for more rapid, broad-scale, and lower cost post-fire assessments than feasible through field assessment. We assessed the accuracy of classifying color-infrared imagery in combination with post-fire LiDAR, and with differenced (pre- and post-fire) LiDAR, in estimating plot percent mortality …

Life-Cycle Water Quantity And Water Quality Implications Of Biofuels, May Wu, Zhonglong Zhang, Yi-Wen Chiu
Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences
Water consumption and water quality continue to be key factors affecting environmental sustainability in biofuel production. This review covers the findings from biofuel water analyses published over the past 2 years to underscore the progress made, and to highlight advancements in understanding the interactions among increased production and water demand, water resource availability, and potential changes in water quality. We focus on two key areas: water footprint assessment and watershed modeling. Results revealed that miscanthus-, switchgrass-, and forest wood-based biofuels all have promising blue and grey water footprints. Alternative water resources have been explored for algae production, and challenges remain. …
A Literature Review On Injection-Site Lesions In Dairy Cows And Culling Decisions, Eric B. Parsons
A Literature Review On Injection-Site Lesions In Dairy Cows And Culling Decisions, Eric B. Parsons
Dairy Science
Currently dairy producers face particular problems concerning their culled cows and bulls, these problems must be addressed so dairy producers have the opportunity to improve the quality of beef produced from their cull dairy cows. At the moment, not much is known about culling decisions outside “break-even” numbers and poor cow conditioning. This literature review outlines the strategy behind culling decisions and looks into potential plans to develop progressive body conditioning and quality of meat sent to auction. Currently the dairy industry is not placing much demand into providing the livestock auctions and harvest plants with higher quality meat. This …

Impact Testing Of Youth-Level Helmets Versus College-Level Helmets, Nicole Hermann
Impact Testing Of Youth-Level Helmets Versus College-Level Helmets, Nicole Hermann
Industrial Technology and Packaging
With so many studies being conducted on professional football players regarding concussions and other related brain injuries, it’s amazing that such an important demographic has been missed. While NFL players are just as subjected to serious injuries as anyone else or even more so, it is important to remember that these players are outfitted, in most cases, with top-of-the-line equipment -- especially their helmets. If the focus is shifted to a younger demographic, youth football players in middle school and high school, the equipment is far less advanced and in a vast majority of cases, has been previously used by …

Media Portrayal Of Individuals In The Lower Class And Its Effects On Attributions Of Educational Hardships, Krista A. Burke
Media Portrayal Of Individuals In The Lower Class And Its Effects On Attributions Of Educational Hardships, Krista A. Burke
Communication Studies
This study investigated how media portrayals of individuals in the lower class affect people’s beliefs about educational hardships in lower socioeconomic areas. Specifically, this study looked at the attributions of these hardships to determine if media consumption had an effect on the internality of attributions. It was hypothesized that increased media consumption would be related to an increased tendency toward internal attributions. It was hypothesized that increased media consumption would lead to lower support for policy changes regarding education. A survey was distributed to assess media consumption habits and attitudes toward educational hardships in the lower class. Correlation results yielded …
On The Growth Rate Of Turbulent Mixing Layers: A New Parametric Model, Jeffrey L. Freeman
On The Growth Rate Of Turbulent Mixing Layers: A New Parametric Model, Jeffrey L. Freeman
Master's Theses
A new parametric model for the growth rate of turbulent mixing layers is proposed. A database of experimental and numerical mixing layer studies was extracted from the literature to support this effort. The domain of the model was limited to planar, spatial, nonreacting, free shear layers that were not affected by artificial mixing enhancement techniques. The model is split into two parts which were each tuned to optimally fit the database; equations for an incompressible growth rate were derived from the error function velocity profile, and a function for a compressibility factor was generalized from existing theory on the convective …
Compacting Loads And Stores For Code Size Reduction, Isaac Asay
Compacting Loads And Stores For Code Size Reduction, Isaac Asay
Master's Theses
It is important for compilers to generate executable code that is as small as possible, particularly when generating code for embedded systems. One method of reducing code size is to use instruction set architectures (ISAs) that support combining multiple operations into single operations. The ARM ISA allows for combining multiple memory operations to contiguous memory addresses into a single operation. The LLVM compiler contains a specific memory optimization to perform this combining of memory operations, called ARMLoadStoreOpt. This optimization, however, relies on another optimization (ARMPreAllocLoadStoreOpt) to move eligible memory operations into proximity in order to perform properly. This mover optimization …
Detection Of An Ultra Low Velocity Zone Beneath Central Mexico With Pcp Waveform Modeling, David James Buckley
Detection Of An Ultra Low Velocity Zone Beneath Central Mexico With Pcp Waveform Modeling, David James Buckley
Physics
PcP phases from a Guatemalan earthquake recorded at Nevada stations of the International seismic network (IM) display evidence of anomalous seismic structure at the core-mantle boundary (CMB); in particular, pre- and post-cursor phases to PcP and ScP. The data is examined for evidence of an ultra-low velocity zone (ULVZ) by identifying and modeling precursors to PcP. Precursory arrivals to PcP may be generated by the interaction of PcP with a thin layer above the core-mantle boundary (CMB). One-dimensional modeling demonstrates that standard earth models of the core-mantle boundary, which lack ULVZ structure, cannot produce the observed PcP data. …
Investigation Of The Supercritical Bifurcation In A Simple Magneto-Mechanical System, Bo Baker
Investigation Of The Supercritical Bifurcation In A Simple Magneto-Mechanical System, Bo Baker
Physics
At the point of supercritical bifurcation, a system with one stable state diverges into two separate stable states, with the original state no longer stable. The experiment reported here illustrates the supercritical bifurcation using a spring steel strip with a vertically applied load as the mechanism to be subjected to supercritical bifurcation. Increasing the load causes the strip to buckle to one side or another. We introduce a novel method for laterally perturbing the strip and creating an imperfection in the bifurcation. Our results show that beyond the point of bifurcation the system exhibits hysteresis and lays the groundwork for …

Monitoring Atom Traps For Neutral Atom Quantum Computing, Taylor Shannon
Physics
To increase computing power for numerous practical advantages, scientists are actively researching the field of quantum computing. Neutral atom quantum computing is a promising avenue towards building a quantum computer that satisfies four of the five DiVincenzo criteria. This involves a magneto-optical trap to cool the atoms and move them to a cloud in the center of a vacuum chamber. Then laser light will be shone through an array of pinholes to trap the atoms in an array of dipole traps. In order to ensure the atoms are trapped, I have set up an imaging system that consists of a …
