Nonlinear Internal Waves, Internal Bores, And Turbulent Mixing In The Nearshore Coastal Environment, Ryan K. Walter
Nonlinear Internal Waves, Internal Bores, And Turbulent Mixing In The Nearshore Coastal Environment, Ryan K. Walter
Physics
The nearshore coastal environment is generally taken to be one of the most productive and ecologically important parts of the ocean. The nearshore is also a complex environment from a physical standpoint, due in large part to the widespread and often irregular occurrence of nonlinear internal waves (NLIWs) that frequently appear more bore-like than wave-like. Indeed, this region of the ocean can be thought of as the “swash zone” for larger-scale internal wave fields on the continental shelf. These nearshore NLIWs and bores have considerable implications for the cross-shelf exchange and transport of nutrients, sediments, contaminants, larvae, and other scalars; …

Twill: A Hybrid Microcontroller-Fpga Framework For Parallelizing Single-Threaded C Programs, Douglas S. Gallatin, Aaron Keen, Chris Lupo, John Y. Oliver
Computer Science and Software Engineering
Increasingly System-On-A-Chip platforms which incorporate both microprocessors and re-programmable logic are being utilized across several fields ranging from the automotive industry to network infrastructure. Unfortunately, the development tools accompanying these products leave much to be desired, requiring knowledge of both traditional embedded systems languages like C and hardware description languages like Verilog. We propose to bridge this gap with Twill, a truly automatic hybrid compiler that can take advantage of the parallelism inherent in these platforms. Twill can extract long-running threads from single threaded C code and distribute these threads across the hardware and software domains to more fully utilize …

Primer On Nuclear Exchange Models, David W. Hafemeister
Physics
Basic physics is applied to nuclear force exchange models between two nations. Ultimately, this scenario approach can be used to try and answer the age old question of "how much is enough?" This work is based on Chapter 2 of Physics of Societal Issues: Calculations on National Security, Environment and Energy (Springer, 2007 and 2014).

Design And Fabrication Of Electrostatically Actuated Serpentine-Hinged Nickel-Phosphorous Micromirror Devices, Nicholas A. Wiswell
Design And Fabrication Of Electrostatically Actuated Serpentine-Hinged Nickel-Phosphorous Micromirror Devices, Nicholas A. Wiswell
Master's Theses
A process for micromachining of micro-mirror devices from silicon-on-insulator wafers was proposed and implemented. Test methods and force applicators for these devices were developed. Following successful fabrication of these devices, a novel process for fabrication of devices out of the plane of the silicon wafer was proposed, so that the devices could be actuated electrostatically. In particular, the process makes use of thick photoresist layers as a sacrificial mold into which an amorphous nickel-phosphorous alloy may be deposited. Ideal design of the electrostatically actuated micro-mirrors was investigated, and a final design was selected and modeled using FEA software, which found …
Application Of Kriging To Motorsport Aerodynamic Analysis, Matthew Cruickshank, Graham Doig
Application Of Kriging To Motorsport Aerodynamic Analysis, Matthew Cruickshank, Graham Doig
Aerospace Engineering
Aerodynamic analysis in motorsport is conducted using three methods, computational, scaled experimental and full-scale operational. However, the varying fidelity, different sampling resolutions and unavoidable errors of each technique make valid comparisons between datasets from each method difficult and time consuming. Kriging is a geostatistical method to estimate values within a data field by examining and applying the trends of the dataset. This research examines how such techniques can be used to aid comparison between aerodynamic measurements of a race car. It examines how kriging can be used to transform discrete measurements, of varying fidelity and sampling resolution, into semi-continuous measurements, …
A Comparison Of Prenatal Alcohol, Tobacco, And Other Drug Use Between San Luis Obispo County And Ventura County, Dana M. Williamson
A Comparison Of Prenatal Alcohol, Tobacco, And Other Drug Use Between San Luis Obispo County And Ventura County, Dana M. Williamson
Statistics
Prenatal substance abuse is a growing issue in America. It can lead to fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, long term growth, behavior, and executive functioning problems, and creates a predisposition for drug use for the child.
This project summarizes the statistical analyses comparing alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use by pregnant women between San Luis Obispo County and Ventura County. The main goal of these analyses is to determine if there is a difference between San Luis Obispo County and Ventura County. This is an interesting comparison because these counties are neighboring counties, and past data have shown that the rate …

Agricultural Education: Graduate Internship Reports
This internship report consists of two parts. The first section addresses the Quality Criteria in Agricultural Education for the program of agricultural instruction at Arvin High School. The second section explains the steps in remodeling the agriculture classroom and agriculture mechanics shop at Arvin High School. The remodeling of the facility was accomplished to address the occupational needs for students entering the work force immediately after high school. It was also designed to prepare students for opportunities in higher education.
Regionalization Of An Asset Storage And Distribution Service, Cameron Dunn, Nathaniel Morrison
Regionalization Of An Asset Storage And Distribution Service, Cameron Dunn, Nathaniel Morrison
Computer Engineering
The existing service we work on, Asset Services, is comprised of multiple independent services which work together to provide an easy interface for internal clients to allow end users to upload their own content, and then distribute that content to both internal and external clients, with a firewall between the service and most external clients. Although Asset Services handles millions of requests a day from all over the globe, all requests and data were sent through a single data center. The objective of this project was to create new endpoints for end users to upload and download assets to/from. By …
Autonomous Close Formation Flight Of Small Uavs Using Vision-Based Localization, Michael B. Darling
Autonomous Close Formation Flight Of Small Uavs Using Vision-Based Localization, Michael B. Darling
Master's Theses
As Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are integrated into the national airspace to comply with the 2012 Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act, new civilian uses for robotic aircraft will come about in addition to the more obvious military applications. One particular area of interest for UAV development is the autonomous cooperative control of multiple UAVs. In this thesis, a decentralized leader-follower control strategy is designed, implemented, and tested from the follower’s perspective using vision-based localization.
The tasks of localization and control were carried out with separate processing hardware dedicated to each task. First, software was written to estimate the relative state …
Optimization Based Touchscreen Graphical User Interface Design, Christian D. Royer
Optimization Based Touchscreen Graphical User Interface Design, Christian D. Royer
Master's Theses
Tablets have been increasing in popularity throughout the past couple years and developers are designing their graphical user interfaces (GUIs) with this trend in mind. This thesis attempts to examine how a process can be designed to automatically create a GUI layout for a menu driven interface based on predetermined criteria. The effectiveness of the system along with a qualitative analysis of GUIs was examined through the use of human subjects testing ATM designs on a tablet. A three-way ANOVA was designed to see if Gender, the type of Form, or if the order they did their testing was a …
Modeling And Simulation Of Parallel D-Statcoms With Full-Wave Rectifiers, Jason Brinsfield
Modeling And Simulation Of Parallel D-Statcoms With Full-Wave Rectifiers, Jason Brinsfield
Master's Theses
In recent years, both a significant increase in electrical demand and a large influx of intermittent renewable energy sources have put a considerable stress on the nation’s electrical grid. Conventional power flow control techniques such as capacitor banks and tap-changing transformers are incapable of adequately handling the rapid fluctuations in power supply and demand that today’s grid experiences. Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) controllers are a practical way to compensate for such rapid power fluctuations. One type of shunt FACTS controller is the Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM), which uses fully controllable switches to source or sink reactive power to a …
