Applying Neural Networks For Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems, Alex Kost
Applying Neural Networks For Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems, Alex Kost
Master's Theses
A proof-of-concept indirect tire-pressure monitoring system is developed using neural net- works to identify the tire pressure of a vehicle tire. A quarter-car model was developed with Matlab and Simulink to generate simulated accelerometer output data. Simulation data are used to train and evaluate a recurrent neural network with long short-term memory blocks (RNN-LSTM) and a convolutional neural network (CNN) developed in Python with Tensorflow. Bayesian Optimization via SigOpt was used to optimize training and model parameters. The predictive accuracy and training speed of the two models with various parameters are compared. Finally, future work and improvements are discussed.

Manufacture Of Complex Geometry Component For Advanced Material Stiffness, David Russell Bydalek
Master's Theses
The manufacture, laminate design, and modeling of a part with complex geometry are explored. The ultimate goal of the research is to produce a model that accurately predicts part stiffness. This is validated with experimental results of composite parts, which refine material properties for use in a final prototype part model. The secondary goal of this project is to explore manufacturing methods for improved manufacturability of the complex part. The manufacturing portion of the thesis and feedback into material model has incorporated a senior project team to perform research on manufacturing and create composite part to be used for experimental …
Modeling Adversarial Insider Vehicles In Mix Zones, Nicholas Plewtong
Modeling Adversarial Insider Vehicles In Mix Zones, Nicholas Plewtong
Master's Theses
Security is a necessity when dealing with new forms of technology that may not have been analyzed from a security perspective. One of the latest growing technological advances are Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANETs). VANETs allow vehicles to communicate information to each other wirelessly which allows for an increase in safety and efficiency for vehicles. However, with this new type of computerized system comes the need to maintain security on top of it.
In order to try to protect location privacy of the vehicles in the system, vehicles change pseudonyms or identifiers at areas known as mix zones. This thesis implements …
An Empirical Study Of Css Code Smells In Web Frameworks, Tobias Paul Bleisch
An Empirical Study Of Css Code Smells In Web Frameworks, Tobias Paul Bleisch
Master's Theses
Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) has become essential to front-end web development for the specification of style. But despite its simple syntax and the theoretical advantages attained through the separation of style from content and behavior, CSS authoring today is regarded as a complex task. As a result, developers are increasingly turning to CSS preprocessor languages and web frameworks to aid in development. However, previous studies show that even highly popular websites which are known to be developed with web frameworks contain CSS code smells such as duplicated rules and hard-coded values. Such code smells have the potential to cause adverse …
Rental Property Energy Efficiency In San Luis Obispo, Zachary Earl Shockley
Rental Property Energy Efficiency In San Luis Obispo, Zachary Earl Shockley
Physics
In the modern era, many people choose to rent homes instead of purchasing a home. College towns have an even more disproportionate number of renters when compared to other cities. The majority of rental properties are much less energy efficient than their owner-occupied counterparts. This project analyzes the energy efficiency issues of rental properties in San Luis Obispo and examines potential ways to remedy these issues. In order to analyze these issues, the guiding principles of building science are first discussed, followed by case studies of rental properties in San Luis Obispo. These case studies examine multiple rental properties and …

Stability Of The Broad-Line Region Geometry And Dynamics In Arp 151 Over Seven Years, A. Pancoast, A. J. Barth, K. Horne, T. Treu, Vardha N. Bennert, H. Winkler
Physics
The Seyfert 1 galaxy Arp 151 was monitored as part of three reverberation mapping campaigns spanning 2008–2015. We present modeling of these velocity-resolved reverberation mapping data sets using a geometric and dynamical model for the broad-line region (BLR). By modeling each of the three data sets independently, we infer the evolution of the BLR structure in Arp 151 over a total of 7 yr and constrain the systematic uncertainties in nonvarying parameters such as the black hole mass. We find that the BLR geometry of a thick disk viewed close to face-on is stable over this time, although the size …

State Of The Art Resilient Design Symposium, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo
Resilience Symposium
What is resilient design? How does it work? What are emergent ways to apply resilient thinking?
These questions formed the basis for the College of Architecture and Environmental Design’s symposium Resilient Design: State of the Art and Emerging Issues for the Built Environment. Twelve distinguished professionals made clear that the built and natural environments are inextricably intertwined, and we urgently need a more nuanced and interdisciplinary approach to resilient design. The presenters reminded us that the problems we face are complex and that we have the agency to act through design. They insisted that we need to act now and …
An Overview Of Body Armor And Single Plate Impact Dynamics, Thomas Matzinger
An Overview Of Body Armor And Single Plate Impact Dynamics, Thomas Matzinger
Master's Theses
In the past, personal body armor was constructed of simple plates of high- strength alloys. However, with the advancement of modern combat and weaponry, particularly armor-piercing ammunition, personal body armor has evolved into more complex and effective metal, ceramic, and composite structures. This paper lays the groundwork for experimental and modeling methods used to understand the effectiveness of new armor designs. Focusing on the first layer of modern body armor, the ”High Impedance” layer. Experiments measuring the change in velocity of bullets passing through aluminum and titanium plates were conducted. These experiments were then replicated through FEA simulation.
Semantic Document Clustering Using Information From Wordnet And Dbpedia, Lubomir Stanchev
Semantic Document Clustering Using Information From Wordnet And Dbpedia, Lubomir Stanchev
Computer Science and Software Engineering
Semantic document clustering is a type of unsupervised learning in which documents are grouped together based on their meaning. Unlike traditional approaches that cluster documents based on common keywords, this technique can group documents that share no words in common as long as they are on the same subject. We compute the similarity between two documents as a function of the semantic similarity between the words and phrases in the documents. We model information from WordNet and DBPedia as a probabilistic graph that can be used to compute the similarity between two terms. We experimentally validate our algorithm on the …

Coastal Upwelling Seasonality And Variability Of Temperature And Chlorophyll In A Small Coastal Embayment, Ryan K. Walter, Kevin Armenta, Brandon Shearer, Ian C. Robbins, John Steinbeck
Physics
While the seasonality of wind-driven coastal upwelling in eastern boundary upwelling systems has long been established, many studies describe two distinct seasons (upwelling and non-upwelling), a generalized framework that does not capture details relevant to marine ecosystems. In this contribution, we present a more detailed description of the annual cycle and upwelling seasonality for an understudied location along the central California coast. Using both the mean monthly upwelling favorable wind stress and the monthly standard deviation, we define the following seasons (contiguous months) and a transitional period (non-contiguous months): “Winter Storms” season (Dec-Jan-Feb), “Upwelling Transition” period (Mar and Jun), …

Resistance Temperature Detectors In A Cryostat Refrigeration System, Kirsten Marie Manahan, Alice Callen
STAR Program Research Presentations
The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) is a ground-based telescope that will survey the Southern sky every few nights. Located in the telescope will be a 3.2 gigapixel digital camera. To ensure proper instrumentation of the camera, there must be a monitored stable temperature. As part of my research, I assembled resistance temperature detectors and tested them to verify their reliability in measuring temperature in the camera’s cryostat refrigeration cooling system. Resistance temperature detectors function by the principle of thermal resistivity, in which their electrical resistances vary as temperature varies. Through testing, I was able to determine whether these particular …

The nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond is a promising tool in oncology, electric field sensing, and quantum cryptography. High-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) nanodiamonds (NDs) are prime contenders for these fields because they host nitrogen-vacancy centers (NVCs) which are applicable towards cancer detection and electric and magnetic field sensing. However, to apply HPHT NDs to these fields, the surface must first be functionalized—a difficult process because of the inert nature of the surface. The project at hand focuses on surface modification of HPHT NDs with amines to allow for further bioconjugation of small molecules and plasmonic shells. This is done via liquid-phase chemistry …

Characterization Of The Bayesian Posterior Distribution In Terms Of Self-Information, Marco Dall'aglio, Theodore P. Hill
Characterization Of The Bayesian Posterior Distribution In Terms Of Self-Information, Marco Dall'aglio, Theodore P. Hill
Research Scholars in Residence
It is well known that the classical Bayesian posterior arises naturally as the unique solution of different optimization problems, without the necessity of interpreting data as conditional probabilities and then using Bayes’ Theorem. Here it is shown that the Bayesian posterior is also the unique minimax optimizer of the loss of self-information in combining the prior and the likelihood distributions, and is the unique proportional consolidation of the same distributions. These results, direct corollaries of recent results about conflations of probability distributions, further reinforce the use of Bayesian posteriors, and may help partially reconcile some of the differences between classical …
