Food Choices For The 21st Century, Louise Berner, Nancy Childs, Constance Geiger, Carl Keen, Janet King, Janet Mcdonald, Sanford Miller, Suzanne Murphy, Harold Schmitz, Anne Shaw, Phil Tong, Connie Weaver

Dairy Science

In December 1997, a coalition of health professional with a wide range of expertise in science, government, education, marketing and communications, convened to discuss the challenges and implications of food choices for the 21st Century. Taking the newly published Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) as a framework and starting point, the members of the coalition explored how health professionals can individualize dietary recommendation to help guide people in their food choices.

Late Holocene Sea Temperatures Along The Cental California Coast, Terry L. Jones, Douglas J. Kennett Jan 1999

Late Holocene Sea Temperatures Along The Cental California Coast, Terry L. Jones, Douglas J. Kennett

Social Sciences

Mussel shells from central California coastal archaeological sites record changes in sea surface temperatures in the past 2000 years. Water temperatures, inferred from oxygen isotopes in the shells, were about 1°C cooler than present and stable between 2000 and 700 yr ago. Between about 700 and 500 yr ago, seasonal variation was greater than present, with extremes above and below historic levels. Water temperatures were 2-3°C cooler than today 500-300 yr ago. The interval of variable sea temperatures 700-500 yr ago partially coincided with an interval of drought throughout central California. A coincident disruption in human settlement along the coast …

Production Of Biogenic Mn Oxides By Leptothrix Discophora Ss-1 In A Chemically Defined Growth Medium And Evaluation Of Their Pb Adsorption Characteristics, Yarrow M. Nelson, Leonard W. Lion, William C. Ghiorse, Michael L. Shuler Jan 1999

Production Of Biogenic Mn Oxides By Leptothrix Discophora Ss-1 In A Chemically Defined Growth Medium And Evaluation Of Their Pb Adsorption Characteristics, Yarrow M. Nelson, Leonard W. Lion, William C. Ghiorse, Michael L. Shuler

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Biogenic Mn oxides were produced by the bacterium Leptothrix discophora SS-1 (= ATCC 3182) in a chemically defined mineral salts medium, and the Pb binding and specific surface area of these oxides were characterized. Growth of SS-1 in the defined medium with pyruvate as a carbon and energy source required the addition of vitamin B12. Complete oxidation of Mn(II) within 60 h required the addition of ≥0.1 μM FeSO4. Pb adsorption isotherms were determined for the biogenic Mn oxides (and associated cells with their extracellular polymer) and compared to the Pb adsorption isotherms of cells and …

Effects Of Discontinuing Coffee Intake On Iron Deficient Guatemalan Toddlers' Cognitive Development And Sleep, Patrice L. Engle, T. Vasdias, I. Howard, M.E. Romero-Abal, J. Quan De Serrano, J. Bulux, N. W. Solomons, K. G. Dewey Jan 1999

Effects Of Discontinuing Coffee Intake On Iron Deficient Guatemalan Toddlers' Cognitive Development And Sleep, Patrice L. Engle, T. Vasdias, I. Howard, M.E. Romero-Abal, J. Quan De Serrano, J. Bulux, N. W. Solomons, K. G. Dewey

Psychology and Child Development

Coffee is commonly given daily to toddlers in Guatemala. Possible negative effects of coffee ingestion on cognitive development and sleep patterns were assessed in 132 children 12–24 months of age who had received coffee for >2 months and were iron deficient on at least one indicator. Children were stratified by initial hemoglobin (A=anemic, Hgb

Review Of A Critical Link: Interventions For Physical Growth And Psychological Development, Gretel Pelto, Katherine Dickin, Patrice L. Engle Jan 1999

Review Of A Critical Link: Interventions For Physical Growth And Psychological Development, Gretel Pelto, Katherine Dickin, Patrice L. Engle

Psychology and Child Development

An extensive scientific review showing that psychological interventions to support psychological development and nutrition interventions to support physical growth are effective and that combined interventions to improve both growth and psychological development have synergistic effects.

History Of The Forum On Physics And Society, David W. Hafemeister Jan 1999

History Of The Forum On Physics And Society, David W. Hafemeister

Physics

Physics is a major component of many of society's difficult issues: nuclear arms and their proliferation, energy shortages and energy impacts, climate change and technical innovation. Because physics principles underlie so many of these societal issues and because physics offers a way to quantify some aspects of them, members of the American Physical Society (APS) should be encouraged to understand, analyze and debate them. That's precisely why APS members formed the Forum on Physics and Society (FPS). To those of us who have been long involved in FPS affairs, it seems but yesterday that we attended the organizing meeting at …

Dietary Intake And Gallbladder Disease: A Review, Marilyn Tseng, James E. Everhart, Robert S. Sandler Jan 1999

Dietary Intake And Gallbladder Disease: A Review, Marilyn Tseng, James E. Everhart, Robert S. Sandler

Kinesiology and Public Health

Objective: Dietary intake has long been looked upon as a potentially modifiable risk factor for gallbladder disease (GBD), here defined as either having gallstones or having had surgery for gallstones. This paper reviews the epidemiological evidence for an association between dietary intake and GBD, focusing on six dietary factors that have received the most attention in studies in this area: energy intake, fatty acids, cholesterol, carbohydrates and fibre, calcium and alcohol. The objectives of this review are to evaluate the potential usefulness of altering the diet to prevent GBD and to consider future research in this area. Design: We reviewed …

The Effects Of Testing Methods On The Flexural Fatigue Life Of Human Cortical Bone, L. V. Griffin, J. C. Gibeling, R. B. Martin, V. A. Gibson, S. M. Stover Jan 1999

The Effects Of Testing Methods On The Flexural Fatigue Life Of Human Cortical Bone, L. V. Griffin, J. C. Gibeling, R. B. Martin, V. A. Gibson, S. M. Stover

Biomedical Engineering

A flexural model of four-point bending fatigue that has been experimentally validated for human cortical bone under load control was used to determine how load and displacement control testing affects the fatigue behavior of human cortical bone in three-point and symmetric four-point bending. Under load control, it was predicted that three-point bending produced no significant differences in fatigue life when compared to four-point bending. However, three-point bending produced less stiffness loss with increasing cycles than four-point bending. In four-point bending, displacement control was predicted to produce about one and a half orders of magnitude greater fatigue life when compared to …
