Synthesis Of White Cadmium-Selenium Quantum Dots, Kyle Reilly
Synthesis Of White Cadmium-Selenium Quantum Dots, Kyle Reilly
Materials Engineering
A process was developed for the synthesis of cadmium-selenium quantum dots that fluoresce at multiple wavelengths, giving a white color to the solution. The process involved making a selenium pre-cursor, then a cadmium precursor, then injecting the selenium precursor into the cadmium precursor and extracting a sample. Once the a repeatable process for synthesizing white quantum dots was developed, the absorption and fluorescence was measured and recorded over a period of two weeks. In the development of the process, the key variables were the temperature of the cadmium precursor and the time between injecting the selenium precursor and extracting the …
Characterization Of Positive Macrosegregation At The Subsurface Of Direct-Chill Cast 7050 Aluminum Forging Billets, Aaron Youril
Characterization Of Positive Macrosegregation At The Subsurface Of Direct-Chill Cast 7050 Aluminum Forging Billets, Aaron Youril
Materials Engineering
Segregation of alloying elements during casting of forging billets may persist to the final forged component leading to unacceptable surface appearance. Determination of the elements or compounds that segregate is the essential first step to solving this problem. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) was used to determine a composition profile of the macrosegregation occurring at the subsurface of an as-cast 7050 aluminum alloy billet. Data collection was carried out by separating 10 to 20 mg samples from the outer centimeter along the radius of the billet, as well as samples from the bulk interior of the billet for comparison with the …

Analysis Of Failed Forging Saddling Mandrels And Process Improvements For Increased Mandrel Lifespan, Brock Costalupes
Materials Engineering
This project seeks to increase the lifespan of steel mandrels used by Schlosser Forge in the saddling process, which is part of the production of forged rings for the aerospace and power generation industries. All saddle mandrel samples were taken from used 4340 steel mandrels. Hardness profiles were measured across rectangular bars cut from the transverse direction of a completely fractured piece of a 7″ diameter mandrel. The hardness near one outer surface of the tested bar was 36 HRC and gradually decreased to 30.5 HRC at the opposite surface. Macroscopic examination of the primary fracture surface along with light …
Effect Of Heating Temperature, Heating Time And Initial Microstructure On Recrystallization Of Waspaloy During Heating For Forging, Marissa Hill
Materials Engineering
A fine, uniform grain size is required for creep limited Waspaloy in aircraft engine applications. Upon heating, Waspaloy does not always recrystallize in a uniform manner resulting in occasional large grains with a majority of the grains meeting the grain size requirements. Waspaloy’s microstructure was analyzed with different heat treatments and in the as-forged condition. The strengthening mechanism is the gamma prime phase. The gamma prime solvus temperature is 1908°F so the different heat treatments were determined around that temperature, as well as the forging temperature range of 1800-2150°F. At the 1850°F heat treatment, the microstructure recrystallized with small grains, …

Preserving Wildlife In San Luis Obispo City By Way Of San Luis Obispo Creek, Sydni Nicolici
Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies
The effectiveness of San Luis Obispo wildlife easements and city open space utilized to preserve species of concern is correlated to the health and maintenance of the San Luis Obispo Creek. I propose that the health of the Creek be addressed before more open space is added to the green belt surrounding the city. This bottom-up approach to preservation will ensure all steps of habitat will function as they should.

Development Of A Protocol To Measure Gene Expression In The Mouse Tibia, Daniel Hoover
Development Of A Protocol To Measure Gene Expression In The Mouse Tibia, Daniel Hoover
Biomedical Engineering
Numerous molecular factors active in bone tissue direct fracture repair and remodeling which can be altered by disease conditions such as Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) and Osteoporosis. Methods of molecular biology are commonly applied to investigate the expression and role of these molecular factors. This project presents a robust three-step protocol for examining gene expression in the mouse tibia. The protocol begins with isolating RNA from a flash frozen tibia sample. The isolated RNA is reverse transcribed into cDNA. Finally, PCR is performed to indentify expressed genes. Establishing this protocol will allow further research into the mechanisms of bone remodeling …

There are many toys that exist that are comfort objects. Generally these are toys that are soft such as blankets, stuffed animals, and pillows. Robotic toys also exist such as games, interactive books, and instruments. There exists a crossover market that includes Furbys, Tomagachi pets, and Fur Real Friends. While being very popular, I believe that this crossover isn’t perfect, and that there is a lot of room for improvement. Riley (Figure 1) was created to make something that is both completely a robot and a comfort object.
Vibration Health Monitoring Of Gears, Markus Josef Scherer
Vibration Health Monitoring Of Gears, Markus Josef Scherer
Master's Theses
Monitoring the health of vibrating gears is important to ensure proper operation especially in potentially life-threatening structures, such as helicopters, nuclear power plants, and uninterruptible power supply transitions in hospitals. The most common monitoring technique is casing mounted accelerometers to measure vibration. In contrast, during the last few years acoustic monitoring techniques have also provided a few diagnostic methods for gear failure. Current diagnostic methods to indicate improper gear behavior use either existing vibration data, recorded from defective gear systems, or modern dynamic models predicting gear failure behavior.
This thesis uses dynamic models to indicate, predict, and diagnose healthy and …

The Importance Of Personal Branding: Uses Of Personal Branding For Career Development And Success, Brenna Collins
Journalism
The following study investigates how to develop and maintain a personal brand in order to further career development and success. With the current state of today’s job market, it is becoming increasingly difficult for individuals to differentiate themselves from competitors. Personal branding is an important tool for jobseekers as it helps define their strongest attributes and sell themselves to companies. As defined by Labrecque, Markos, and Milne (2011), “personal branding entails capturing and promoting an individual’s strengths and uniqueness to a target audience,” (p. 38). This study focuses on the best practices to create and manage a professional self-image in …

Solar Powered Led Lantern For Developing Countries, Lacy Billingsly Iii
Solar Powered Led Lantern For Developing Countries, Lacy Billingsly Iii
Electrical Engineering
In recent years, both LED and solar technology have become the focus of sustainable energy. LED lighting uses significantly less power than its fluorescent competitor. Solar cells enable clean, natural, and portable power. As these two entities become more efficient at exponential rates, the hope for the wide use of off-grid lighting in less developed countries seemingly increases at the same rate. Currently, there has been a development of industry for portable solar powered lighting systems. Before designing a product, a study was conducted of current products on the market that aim to light dark homes. This study and design …

Spread Spectrum Jamming, Edward Hwang, Karl Sanders
Spread Spectrum Jamming, Edward Hwang, Karl Sanders
Electrical Engineering
Direct-sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) is a modulation technique that has been used in many telecommunication devices. Unlike the case of a single frequency carrier, the modulated signal in DSSS occupies a much wider bandwidth in order to reduce the possible interferences with narrow band communication signals. Considering the fact that spread spectrum is generally used to resist jamming, there are very few documented techniques or methods on jamming spread spectrum signals
In this project, we attempt to jam a remote control (RC) car (manufactured by Traxxas) that employs DSSS. The multichannel transmitter of a Sony camera is used as a …

Teaching Introductory Programming Concepts: A Comparison Of Scratch And Arduino, Anne Beug
Master's Theses
Computing has become an integral part of modern America. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that between 2008 and 2018, the United States will have 1.4 million job openings in computing fields [1]. Since the early 2000's (just after the "dot com bust"), the number of students enrolled in computing majors (Computer Science, Computer Engineering, etc.) dropped precipitously by over 50%, only starting to rise again in 2009 [2]. One way to rectify to this gap between demand and supply is to start training students in computational thinking during high school. While the Computer Science Advanced Placement AB test has …
