Traversing Swanton Road, 14th Ed., James A. West
Academic, Government & Associated Organizational Research Resources
Situated at the northwest end of Santa Cruz County and occupying circa 30 square miles of sharply contrasted terrain, the Scott Creek Watershed concentrates within its geomorphological boundaries, at least 10-12% of California's flora, both native and introduced. Paradoxically, the use/abuse that the watershed has sustained over the past 140+ years, has not necessarily diminished the biodiversity and perhaps parallels the naturally disruptive but biologically energizing processes (fire, flooding, landslides and erosion), which have also been historically documented for the area for +60 years. This is an early edition of an extensive document by James A. West. Please visit the …

Improving A Family’S Overall Quality Of Life Through Parent Training In Pivotal Response Treatment, Trevor W. Buckley, Angela P. Ente, Michael B. Ruef
Improving A Family’S Overall Quality Of Life Through Parent Training In Pivotal Response Treatment, Trevor W. Buckley, Angela P. Ente, Michael B. Ruef
Graduate Studies in Education
As the diagnoses of autism in young children continually increase, the need for families to have access to research-based treatment models that are effective and efficient has become clear. Current research demonstrates the demand for parent-delivered behavioral interventions. The aim of this single-case study, conducted as part of an integrated Masters in Education/Special Education Credential Program, was to examine the relationship between one parent trained in pivotal response treatment (PRT), her implementation of PRT techniques, and the correlated gains of behavioral compliance in her 6-year-old boy with high-functioning autism (HFA). Visual analysis of collected data as well as calculation of …

Central Coast Groundfish Species And Fillet Identification Manual, Robbie Milla
Central Coast Groundfish Species And Fillet Identification Manual, Robbie Milla
Agricultural Education and Communication
The purpose of this project was to create a manual that would aid fishermen and fish consumers in the successful identification of various groundfish species and their fillets. The manual was crafted with quality photographs to give the viewer a vivid depiction of the targeted groundfish species. The images were taken to specifically target the identification characteristics of each fish species. It was the hope of the author to educate anyone who was interested in the groundfish fishery. The manual includes: basic groundfish regulations, groundfish species identification, and groundfish fillet identification.
Service First: Embracing The Scholarship On Teaching And Learning Through Active Engagement In Parks, Recreation, And Tourism Education, Keri Schwab, Brian Greenwood, Daniel Dustin
Service First: Embracing The Scholarship On Teaching And Learning Through Active Engagement In Parks, Recreation, And Tourism Education, Keri Schwab, Brian Greenwood, Daniel Dustin
Recreation, Parks and Tourism Administration
In this article, we turn the tripartite responsibility of teaching, scholarship, and service inside out. Rather than considering service to be a poor stepchild to scholarship and teaching, we reason that service as engaged scholarship should be the centerpiece of academic life, especially in an applied discipline like parks, recreation, and tourism. We reason further that improving engaged service should be the driving force behind good teaching, student learning, and scholarship. Finally, we reason that “impact factor,” a term commonly limited to citations in scholarly journals, should be expanded to include positive differences made on the ground in professional practice …

Relationships Between The Built Environment And Walking And Weight Status Among Older Women In Three U.S. States, Philip J. Troped, Heather A. Starnes, Robin C. Puett, Kosuke Tamura, Ellen K. Cromley, Peter James, Eran Ben-Joseph, Steven J. Melly, Francine Laden
Relationships Between The Built Environment And Walking And Weight Status Among Older Women In Three U.S. States, Philip J. Troped, Heather A. Starnes, Robin C. Puett, Kosuke Tamura, Ellen K. Cromley, Peter James, Eran Ben-Joseph, Steven J. Melly, Francine Laden
Kinesiology and Public Health
There are few studies of built environment associations with physical activity and weight status among older women in large geographic areas that use individual residential buffers to define environmental exposures. Among 23,434 women (70.0±6.9 years; range = 57-85) in 3 states, relationships between objective built environment variables and meeting physical activity recommendations via walking and weight status were examined. Differences in associations by population density and state were explored in stratified models. Population density (odds ratio (OR)=1.04 [1.02,1.07]), intersection density (ORs=1.18-1.28), and facility density (ORs=1.01-1.53) were positively associated with walking. Density of physical activity facilities was inversely associated with overweight/obesity …
Telecom Policy Across The Former Yugoslavia: Incentives, Challenges, And Lessons Learned, Laura Hosman, Philip N. Howard
Telecom Policy Across The Former Yugoslavia: Incentives, Challenges, And Lessons Learned, Laura Hosman, Philip N. Howard
Political Science
What is the recipe for good information policy? Hosman and Howard address this in an emerging economy context through case studies of six states that arose following the dissolution of the former Yugoslavia. These new nations pursued differing information policy paths that led to diverse outcomes. The authors find, in general, conventional positive outcomes supporting policies for privatization, liberalization, and competition; but at the same time discover many counterintuitive outcomes based on each country’s unique circumstances. General rules are good, but in specific cases alternative paths can also lead to success.

Design And Construction Of Five Gallon Anaerobic Digesters, Daniel John Schricker
Design And Construction Of Five Gallon Anaerobic Digesters, Daniel John Schricker
BioResource and Agricultural Engineering
This project discusses the design, construction, and testing of a laboratory scale anaerobic digestion reactors. It included four digesters and two gas measurement devices. The outside dimensions of the digester were 22 inch tall with a 10.5 inch diameter. They were constructed from schedule 40 PVC pipe, with a wall thickness of 0.5 inches. They were designed to be filled with 20 liters of digester feed stock, at a height of 16 inches from the bottom, leaving 5 inches of head space above the digester feed for biogas accumulation. Two of the reactors were heated with Hydrofarm seedling heating pads …
