“What Were You Wearing?”: Victimization Of Sexual Assault Victims At Cal Poly, Joanna Birns
“What Were You Wearing?”: Victimization Of Sexual Assault Victims At Cal Poly, Joanna Birns
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
This paper will argue that Cal Poly and San Luis Obispo place greater blame and responsibility on women victims of sexual assault than their perpetrators. Sexual assault and sexual assault prevention methods in local media will be examined, as will three recent Title IX cases of Cal Poly students. Placing abundant blame and responsibility on the victims of sexual assault creates a culture of victimization, which discourages victims from reporting their sexual assaults. Although this paper does not offer up suggestions of how we can better Cal Poly’s approach to sexual assault, it hopes to spark a conversation about improving …

“We Need A Little More Of This” Margaret Chase And Her Career At Cal Poly, Jacob Robin
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
In 1908, a woman by the name of Margaret Chase set foot on the Cal Poly campus. She was the epitome of a strong leader in her school and community. The respectability cast upon her by her peers has shown the influence she has given to the faculty and students. Chase represents a role model, whose story has not been told; however, it should be. The school motto of Cal Poly is “Learn By Doing” and Margaret Chase lived her life on those accords. The school expects every student to live and study by that motto, but Miss Chase shows …

As advanced as society has become in technology and medicine, children are still affected with a multitude of incurable diseases. When a child is diagnosed with cancer, it can be a financial burden for the family in addition to the downfalls of a patient suffering from that disease (Christos, 2015). For a family to manage the toll cancer puts on them, they need assistance to relieve them financially and emotionally. “Jack’s Helping Hand (JHH) was created to assist children in the community with cancer and special needs who have unmet physical, mental and medical needs,” (Jack’s Helping Hand, 2018). This …

History Of California Polytechnic Foundation, 1940s – 1950s: A Power Struggle Of Private Management Of Higher Education And State Management, Jon Reinemann
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
This paper is an examination of the history of California Polytechnic Foundation during the 1940s – 1950s. A power struggle of private management of higher education and state management existed between the administration of California Polytechnic State University and the Department of Education of California. Julian A. McPhee made his personal mission to extend the financial stability for the University after the massive cuts it suffered in the Great Depression. He would ultimately fail as the other California College Presidents brought back the legal incorporation and revised it to make it under direct supervision of CPSU San Luis Obispo and …
Cal Poly’S Sexual Revolution, Jasmine Valsaint
Cal Poly’S Sexual Revolution, Jasmine Valsaint
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
The sexual revolution is perceived as a shift in sexual attitudes beginning in the mid 1960’s and ending in the mid 1980’s. The revolution was apparent at universities across the United States through the introduction of widely available contraceptives and education in sexual health. The purpose of this paper is to investigate and describe how the sexual revolution allowed for social and administrative change at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. Through statistical reports as well as the ever-changing views of students and faculty on campus, it can be proven that although Cal Poly is historically conservative, it …

Understanding The Chaos: Poly Royal Riots In 1990, Coraal Dadon
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
In April of 1990, Cal Poly’s President Warren J. Baker made the decision to indefinitely cancel the annual open house event, Poly Royal. The decision was made easy because of the violent and disruptive riots that broke out during the weekend of the event that year. Primarily the result of binge drinking among young students, the riots included: arson, destruction of property, and over a hundred injuries. This paper will explore all the precautionary measures taken by city officials to combat the riots and examine the measures that could have been taken to prevent the riots from happening. Using sources …
Agriculture In The Classroom Farm Day Lesson Plan, Tessa Nicole Thompson
Agriculture In The Classroom Farm Day Lesson Plan, Tessa Nicole Thompson
Agricultural Education and Communication
Nontraditional educational programs have been proclaimed desirable by many teachers, and proven effective through data collection and feedback (Coombs and Ahmed, 1974). Of the more popular unconventional educational programs, outside learning activities are commonly implemented as they are not only advantageous to students, but to teachers as well (Cengelci, 2013; Knoblock, 2008). Though nontraditional, much thought must be put into creating lesson plans for these educational programs.
El Dorado County’s Agriculture in the Classroom program utilizes nontraditional outdoor learning activities to conduct “Farm Day.” This lesson plan, created for Farm Day, is to teach third graders the importance of composting …

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering
This report will encompass a two-quarter long senior project effort to provide a recommendation for the client, Crystal Engineering. Crystal Engineering is currently in the process of introducing three new products, one now and two within the next six months. However, their existing lines already occupy the available production space and as a result, they are unable to determine how to effectively incorporate new production lines within the facility. Therefore, the main objectives of this project were to deliver several facility redesign layouts backed by a holistic justification for each. The formulation of the facility redesign layouts incorporated several industrial …
Biophilia: Alienation And Solidarity, Ralph Acampora
Biophilia: Alienation And Solidarity, Ralph Acampora
Between the Species
Biophilia, theorized by Fromm, Wilson, and Kellert, is examined as a potential support for a pro-animal ethos. First, I look at the idea and its definitions at the hands of its chief theorizers. Then I investigate how different stages of human cultural development (foraging, pastoralism, industrial agriculture) have influenced different aspects of biophilia—especially as this bears on animal alienation. Finally, I consider possible remedies in the form of renewed patterns of solidarity with other species, one of which transforms Marx’ concept of species-being. The article has ethical implications, but it is essentially a work in philosophical anthropology.

The city of Atlanta has become new center-point of cultural convergence in America. The profile of the city has grown due to the influx of money, flowing from several different areas of commerce. These include increased business ventures in Atlanta’s metropolitan area, expanding film production, and the development of a billion-dollar sports stadium. Not only does the city thrive in its business ventures, but music and television production in Atlanta have a profound effect on its artistic community. Artists such as Andre 3000, Migos, and Childish Gambino enjoy commercial success with accolades such as Grammy wins and nominations.

Skylux Smartphone Controlled Skylight, James A. Green Vi
Computer Engineering
There are numerous electric skylight openers available for purchase for home-use, but the majority of them are remote based, or operated by a wall-unit. Furthermore, these devices are in hard to reach places, so if one were to lose the remote on a remote operated system, the only option is to contact the manufacturer for a new device. As such, my senior project, in collaboration with Colton Sundstrom’s senior project, build upon our existing capstone project in order to allow operation of the Internet of Things (IoT) device over the internet. Our client, Richard Murray, was unsatisfied with the current …
Powder Bed Surface Quality And Particle Size Distribution For Metal Additive Manufacturing And Comparison With Discrete Element Model, Irene Yee
Master's Theses
Metal additive manufacturing (AM) can produce complex parts that were once considered impossible or too costly to fabricate using conventional machining techniques, making AM machines an exceptional tool for rapid prototyping, one-off parts, and labor-intensive geometries. Due to the growing popularity of this technology, especially in the defense and medical industries, more researchers are looking into the physics and mechanics behind the AM process. Many factors and parameters contribute to the overall quality of a part, one of them being the powder bed itself. So far, little investigation has been dedicated to the behavior of the powder in the powder …
Egg Awareness, Hailee J. French
Egg Awareness, Hailee J. French
Agricultural Education and Communication
In 2008, Proposition 2 passed, forcing all egg producers in California to provide more room inside of cages to their laying hens. The Humane Society of the United States [HSUS] initiated this battle and won but, less than a decade later decided that still wasn’t enough room for the birds. HSUS is now pushing to have a new measure on the ballot in November 2018 forcing all egg producers in California to produce their eggs cage free.
This project will survey the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo campus to gauge the campus’s understanding of egg production in California. …

The HumSynth is a voice controlled music synthesizer. Unlike the commonly found voice modulators on the market, this product uses a vocal input in place of the traditional keyboard interface. This allows the instrument to serve as an intuitive learning tool for those not proficient in music theory. By using their voice, the consumer is able to get a feel for different scales and keys additionally bypassing the physical learning curve of learning a traditional instrument. By the date of submission this project performs basic functions in recreating the pitch input but does not meet the full specs. The enclosure …
The Taiko Connection: Reclaiming History, Activating Equality, Tamiko Cavey
The Taiko Connection: Reclaiming History, Activating Equality, Tamiko Cavey
History
Taiko drumming has been a Japanese cultural art form from as early as the fifth century. A taiko "boom" in which ensemble groups gained popularity took off in Japan post-WWII, and in the United States during the late 1960s-early 1970s amid the Asian American Civil Rights Movement. In discussing the historical experiences of the burakumin outcastes of Japan and Japanese Americans, this paper explores how taiko has been used as a form of social activism for these marginalized groups, and how this cultural reclamation facilitates the process of developing self-identity.
