Anti-Colonial Action In Real Time: Mestizx Latinx People, Place, Cisheteropatriarchy, And Our Way Forward, Alejandro Bupara May 2019

Anti-Colonial Action In Real Time: Mestizx Latinx People, Place, Cisheteropatriarchy, And Our Way Forward, Alejandro Bupara

sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies

Mestizx Latinx peoples, being of both white and Indigenous heritage, are colonized peoples on colonized lands living under the settlers’ systems of white supremacy, cisheteropatriarchy, and capitalism. Mestizx Latinx people have made various attempts to reckon with this colonized status and define an anti-colonial, liberatory way forward for ourselves. This essay explores the contemporary context of Mestizx peoples in the United States, positioning our history within the broader story of settler colonialism. It investigates our disconnection from our ancestral lands and traditions, arguing that Mestizx Latinx people have formed new attachments to places on these colonized lands via the hood …

Men Who Care: Analyzing Masculinity Within Peer Support Organizations, Victoria Ford May 2019

Men Who Care: Analyzing Masculinity Within Peer Support Organizations, Victoria Ford

sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies

This study examines the concept of “healthy masculinity” through qualitative interviews with men in peer support roles. Men involved in peer support organizations highlighted values of empathy, understanding, and protecting others as being central to masculinity. Results revealed that men in peer support roles invoked cultural idioms or phrases of masculinity, which centered around the following themes: the lack of men, how men in peer support are different from other men, and how these are the “right kind” of men.

What Advantage Does Difference Make? Leveling The Imperial Playing Field, Daniel Heinz May 2019

What Advantage Does Difference Make? Leveling The Imperial Playing Field, Daniel Heinz

sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies

In this article, I revisit the last ten years of international sport policies on gender testing in order to revise normative constructions of the athletes’ bodies. Specifically, I focus on the International Association of Athletics Federation’s (IAAF) new regulation from 2018 governing the eligibility of certain female athletes with differences of sexual development accompanied by elevated levels of natural testosterone. I argue that the IAAF testosterone regulation is based on a colonial continuity of upholding gender norms and racial hierarchies.

The aim of this project was to improve upon the design of previously developed Insulated Solar Electric Cookers (ISECs) by adding a thermal storage system to allow for quicker cook times and the ability to cook food at non-peak solar hours. The team’s goal was to develop a working prototype utilizing a phase change medium as the …

Vaccine Cooler For The Global Poor, Benjamin J. Larson, Cooper E. Gibson, Eilbron Younan, Cody R. Volk May 2019

Vaccine Cooler For The Global Poor, Benjamin J. Larson, Cooper E. Gibson, Eilbron Younan, Cody R. Volk

Mechanical Engineering

Cal Poly physics professors Peter Schwartz and Nathan Heston approached the Solar Freeze team with the problem that remote communities in Africa have limited access to modern-day medicine or vaccines. They suggested that we try and design a cooling device that can keep vaccines cold for multiple days at a time while the medicine is transported to remote villages. Currently, there are vaccine cooler products on the market, but most of them are very expensive or lack portability. Peter and Nate have tasked the Solar Freeze team to come up with a less expensive solution that is also portable and …

Usb-C Power Adapter For Dc House Project, Tyler G. Starr, Ezzeddeen Gazali

Electrical Engineering

Despite the importance of electricity and the impact it has on our daily lives, many people around the world still live without this essential utility today. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), approximately 1.1 billion people in the world did not have access to electricity in 2017. The DC House Project at Cal Poly aims to provide electricity to people living in rural areas by directly utilizing DC energy generated from renewable or human powered sources without the need for DC-AC conversions. However, one significant issue is the lack of a standardized DC wall socket. Standards for AC wall …

As-875-19 Resolution On The Campus Chick-Fil-A, Thomas Gutierrez Apr 2019

As-875-19 Resolution On The Campus Chick-Fil-A, Thomas Gutierrez

Academic Senate Resolutions

Chick-Fil-A and its Foundation have a history of donations to anti-LGBTQ organizations; and These donations represent direct evidence of a worldview highly inconsistent with our values of diversity and inclusivity at Cal Poly; and The presence of Chick-Fil-A on campus negatively impacts campus climate for many students, faculty, and staff; and therefore be it that the Academic Senate urges Cal Poly and Cal Poly Corporation to sever ties with Chick-Fil-A and terminate the contract with the on-campus franchise; and be it further Cal Poly and Cal Poly Corporation be mindful of the practices and donation patterns of its business partners …

U.S. Energy Independence, Lorenzo Waller Apr 2019

U.S. Energy Independence, Lorenzo Waller

Paideia

While many know the United States is the largest consumer of oil in the world, recently, it has become the biggest producer of the resource as well. Within the next decade it will export more oil than it imports, which will mark a significant change in the global energy market. This paper will investigate and evaluate what changes are to be expected, with a specific focus on OPEC member countries. I will utilize qualitative evidence in the form of three case studies. These case studies will provide detailed discussion and analysis of how energy independence in the United States will …

New Colonialism In Developmental Aid, Emily Meyer Apr 2019

New Colonialism In Developmental Aid, Emily Meyer

Paideia

Conventional wisdom suggests United States’ economic foreign aid is wasted and should be cut. In challenging this conventional wisdom, I argue that though there is potential for good through foreign aid, bilateral aid programs like that of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation resemble neo-colonialism. This paper examines international aid’s effects on establishing debt traps, promoting exploitation, and reinforcing hierarchy. Through analysis of primary and secondary evidence, including but not limited to UNCTAD and WWF-SIGHT reports, I look at how the effects of international aid contribute to the sovereignty of the recipient countries. My findings reveal that though Chinese international aid …

Fishy Reasoning And The Ethics Of Eating, Mylan Engel Jr. Apr 2019

Fishy Reasoning And The Ethics Of Eating, Mylan Engel Jr.

Between the Species

Ethical vegetarians believe that it is morally wrong to eat meat. Yet, many self-ascribed “ethical vegetarians” continue to eat fish. The question I explore here is this: Can one coherently maintain that it is morally wrong to eat meat, but morally permissible to eat fish? I argue that it is morally inconsistent for ethical vegetarians to eat fish, not on the obvious yet superficial ground that fish flesh is meat, but on the morally substantive ground that fish are sentient intelligent beings capable of experiencing morally significant pain and thus deserve moral consideration equal to that owed birds and mammals.

A Vegan Exploration Of Social Movement Theory, Abby Ahlgrim Apr 2019

A Vegan Exploration Of Social Movement Theory, Abby Ahlgrim

Paideia

This paper was written as a final project for POLS 419 Social Movements and Political Protests with Dr. Jean Williams in the Spring of 2018. This paper aims to explore veganism within the context of social movement theory, examine the ideological boundary found at the intersection of private action and movement participation, and look at the relationship between personal and collective identity and change. First, through defining Suzanne Stagenborg’s Theories of Social Movements and Collective Action, this paper establishes veganism within the context of existent social movement theories such as collective behavior, resource mobilization, political process, synthetic approach, and new …
