Providing safe and accessible entrances to schools, especially elementary, middle, and high schools where children are below the age of 18, should be of utmost priority to cities. Providing wide sidewalks, painted bicycle lanes and continental crosswalks (with the lateral lines) are just basic infrastructure improvements that can be made within the vicinity of a school. However, due to lack of funding or attention from the city departments, many school entryways are being neglected and the direct impact of this is increased collisions among students, drivers, and bicyclists. My senior project studied one such school in Fremont, California where the …

Highways in the United states were designed to connect us; however, they ultimately created a loss of connectivity within communities. Physical and socioeconomic segregation are a staple among American cities due to the greed of the automobile industry beginning in the 1920’s (Klein, 1996) and racially fueled highway engineering of the 1950’s (Mohl 2002). Public space doesn’t require a key, and in a truly democratic society, these areas are inclusive to all (Deutsche 1992), however, there are still holes in connectivity, spurring automobile dependency, siloed neighborhoods, environmental justice issues and ultimately, only benefiting those with access to an automobile and …

Equity In Accessibility, A Case Study Of City Of Sacramento, Meredith C. Milam
City and Regional Planning
This paper is a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) spatial analysis of the transportation accessibility and equity in Sacramento, California. A literature review examines discriminatory regulatory policies in the 1900s that wrote racial segregation into law. The effects of these policies have lasting effects on spatial dispersal of people and create barriers to accessibility and therefore result in inequitable transportation systems. The accessibility and equity analysis in Sacramento explores demographic data, job concentration and available modes of transportation, and commuter data. The results of the analysis suggest that there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach when it comes to measuring accessibility and equity. …

Specifically, we establish the substation and bus network as graph theoretical models for this major piece of electrical infrastructure. We also generate substation and bus networks for a wide range of existing data from both synthetic and real grids and show several properties of these graphs, such as density, degeneracy, and planarity. We also motivate future research into the definition of a graph family containing bus and substation networks and the …
Upending The "Racial Death-Wish": Black Gay Liberation And The Culture Of Black Homophobia, Kailyn Pope
Upending The "Racial Death-Wish": Black Gay Liberation And The Culture Of Black Homophobia, Kailyn Pope
Master's Theses
This thesis analyzes the origin and impact of Black homophobia found in activist spaces of mid- to late-twentieth-century American society. Black gay Americans were subjected to intersecting forms of systemic and cultural oppression that were exceedingly hard to escape due to both the homophobia in Black spaces and the racism in gay spaces. Black gay activists and artists thus had to create their own avenues of expression where they and others could fully embrace what it meant to be Black and gay. This work utilizes a Black feminist framework to explore the roots of Black homophobia and how this type …
Insects As A Sustainable Food Ingredient – Utilization Of Carrot Pomace, Identification Of Early Adopters, And Evaluation Of Mealworm Acceptability, Dominic Rovai
Master's Theses
Insects have been proposed as a sustainable alternative to livestock to help feed the growing population. Edible insects such as mealworms require less land and resources and can utilize food by-products to grow. While insects are consumed by over 2 billion people worldwide, they are not widely accepted in developed countries like the United States because of their unfamiliarity and the perception of disgust associated with entomophagy. The objectives of this research are to 1) grow mealworms using carrot pomace and determine an optimum diet for growth and nutritional composition, 2) identify and classify early adopters of insects, and propose …

Buck Converter With Voltage Foldback Protection, Fabian Aaron Enriquez, Pedro Rincon Rosales
Electrical Engineering
In this work, we implemented the idea of current foldback protection onto a buck converter. Current foldback protection essentially helps reduce the power dissipation which may be caused by a short circuit or overload scenario. To achieve the goal of this project, we used a combination of comparators, operational amplifiers and MOSFETs to create a current foldback sub controller. This controller would then serve as a feedback device between the output of the converter and the main controller to detect if a fault condition has occurred. Following the design, we performed simulation of the current foldback controller using PSpice and …

Fires ravaged over 4 million acres and thousands of structures across California during 2020[1]. California is prone to fires due to dry flatland and scarce rainfall every year. Fires cause damage to not only natural habitats, but also communities near the fire. Rebuilding taxes the local communities as well as state and federal resources. Stopping fires before they start is crucial to protecting ecosystems as well as lives. Currently, manned towers are the system in place today to detect fires. This project aims to detect early signs of fire through visual and infrared image capture in an automated process.
