This paper analyzes all this preconstruction work for a shaded structure at Growing Grounds. The Growing Grounds shared community space in San Luis Obispo, California, provides incredible resources and opportunities to the people in the area that struggle with mental health. Through horticulture, the volunteers must work hard to …

Reasons And Remedies To The Dying Plant Walls, Hayley Q. Mcgough Aug 2021

Reasons And Remedies To The Dying Plant Walls, Hayley Q. Mcgough

Construction Management

Sustainability in construction has been increasingly popular and detrimental with the state of the planet and climate change. One of the more popular solutions is the addition of plant façades to a building, which are plants that are put on the vertical of a building. The benefits that come with plant facades include and are not limited to: Reduction of the urban heat island effect, improved air quality, local job creation, improved energy efficiency, building structure protection, noise reduction, increased biodiversity, urban agriculture. These benefits are not reaching their full potential because these plant façades keep dying creating a bigger …

Comparison Of Two Advanced Oxidation Processes For Their Production Of Hydroxyl Radicals And Evaluation Of A Uv/Ozone Aop At Varying Uv Fluence For Treating Diclofenac, Alexandra Cass

Master's Theses

This study explores the efficacy of two advanced oxidation processes for generation of hydroxyl radicals to promote degradation of emerging contaminants. Drought and water shortage have become pressing issues caused by our world’s changing climate. Water reclamation and reuse are increasingly important options for relieving this water stress. Water reuse runs the risk of reintroducing recalcitrant compounds that can accumulate in our bodies and environment. Advanced treatment methods that degrade these compounds are vital to protect our health and the health of the environment while providing necessary water resources. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have shown great promise for removing recalcitrant …

Comparison Of Animal Versus Plant-Based Protein Supplementation To Nitrogen Balance In Female College Students, Adeline Maykish

Master's Theses

Plant-based diets have become popular in the past 10 years, with approximately 11% of Americans self-identifying as vegan or vegetarian, and many others trying to reduce meat consumption. Due to this increasing interest, the plant-based food market has exploded with several novel innovative products serving as alternatives to animal-based products. One such example is almond protein powder, a fairly new protein supplement created as an alternative to whey protein. A number of studies have compared animal-based protein supplementation, such as whey to plant-based supplementation, such as soy, on muscle protein synthesis and skeletal muscle preservation. Due to the novelty of …

The Forum: Journal of History

This article explores American colonial education in Micronesia from the final months of World War Two to the late 1970s. The primary research question concerns American usage of education to pursue political and military goals, and how this affected multiple dimensions of Indigenous life. Although the dominant narrative at the time blamed Indigenous people for difficulties in implementing American education, the Western values permeating the American consciousness significantly inhibited the possibility of success as Americans defined it. This article details American motivations and efforts to implement an educational system as part of a larger goal of “economic development” and analyzes …

A Lifeline For Millions: American Relief In An Age Of Isolationism, Matteo Marsella Jun 2021

A Lifeline For Millions: American Relief In An Age Of Isolationism, Matteo Marsella

The Forum: Journal of History

American military involvement in the Great War is a widely discussed aspect of the conflict. The period following the war is often considered an example of American isolationist foreign policy. Lesser well known are American efforts to provide food relief to starving populations in Europe, which began during and continued well after the war's conclusion. This paper seeks to locate American relief efforts within broader postwar foreign policy. Although President Harding’s 1920 election victory on a platform of a “return to normalcy” is often construed as a rejection of Wilsonian internationalism and a return to prewar isolationism, there is no …

Medieval Infertility: Treatments, Cures, And Consequences, Zia Simpson Jun 2021

Medieval Infertility: Treatments, Cures, And Consequences, Zia Simpson

The Forum: Journal of History

Since the first civilizations emerged, reproductive ability has been one of the most prominent elements in assessing a woman’s value to society. Other characteristics such as beauty, intelligence, and wealth may have been granted comparable consequence, but those are arbitrary and improvable. Fertility is genetic, and for centuries it was beyond human control. Among the medieval European nobility, fertility held even greater power. The absence of an heir could, either directly or indirectly, bring about war, economic depression, and social disorder. Catholicism provided a refuge by allowing barren women to retain their hopes, while simultaneously enriching Rome’s coffers. Other women …

Netting Nemo: A Moral Ontology For The Scaled And Slimy, Zachary Piso Jun 2021

Netting Nemo: A Moral Ontology For The Scaled And Slimy, Zachary Piso

Between the Species

Here I develop an ontology of aquarium fish that articulates the relationships that many fishkeepers hold with their fish and considers how these relationships generate moral responsibilities. The investigation explores the norms already regulating hobbyist discourse and practice, charting the values that are cited to justify recommendations and restrictions and demonstrating how morally responsible fishkeeping participates in a particular moral ontology. Principally I aim to show that the subject of moral consideration in fishkeeping is rarely the individual fish and only sometimes the fish species, but paradigmatically the “community tank.” In getting fish, one has responsibilities to pair compatible species …

Construction projects require a substantial amount of power to operate tools and power lights. Traditionally, this power is delivered to the project sites via transmission lines or generators; however, some construction projects must be undertaken in relatively remote areas where the infrastructure is lacking. Additionally, there may be reservations concerning the ethical implications that come with the method by which the power is generated. To provide a solution to bringing sufficient and ethically generated power to remote or urban worksites, this project investigates the design and implementation of a generator that is solar-powered and enclosed in a trailer for transportability. …

Void And Density Analysis Of Cyanate Ester Composites, Cameron B. Atwood Jun 2021

Void And Density Analysis Of Cyanate Ester Composites, Cameron B. Atwood

Materials Engineering

In large scale composite manufacturing, voids and their frequency within prepreg materials play an important role in predicting the mechanical properties of a final composite laminate. The industry standard process for determining voids in composite materials is through resin digestion and resin ignition via ASTM D3171. One limitation to this standard is its ability to frequently produce negative void volume values in quality control testing, due to the calculation sensitivity of input resin and fiber densities. For this reason, Toray Advanced Composites wanted to investigate the process steps of ASTM D3171 to determine if discrepancies in resin density data may …

Blacow Road Improvement Plan, Nishita Kandikuppa Jun 2021

Blacow Road Improvement Plan, Nishita Kandikuppa

City and Regional Planning

Providing safe and accessible entrances to schools, especially elementary, middle, and high schools where children are below the age of 18, should be of utmost priority to cities. Providing wide sidewalks, painted bicycle lanes and continental crosswalks (with the lateral lines) are just basic infrastructure improvements that can be made within the vicinity of a school. However, due to lack of funding or attention from the city departments, many school entryways are being neglected and the direct impact of this is increased collisions among students, drivers, and bicyclists. My senior project studied one such school in Fremont, California where the …

Walnut Overcrossing: Bridging A Gap In San Luis Obispo's Active Transportation Network, Chris Murphy

City and Regional Planning

Highways in the United states were designed to connect us; however, they ultimately created a loss of connectivity within communities. Physical and socioeconomic segregation are a staple among American cities due to the greed of the automobile industry beginning in the 1920’s (Klein, 1996) and racially fueled highway engineering of the 1950’s (Mohl 2002). Public space doesn’t require a key, and in a truly democratic society, these areas are inclusive to all (Deutsche 1992), however, there are still holes in connectivity, spurring automobile dependency, siloed neighborhoods, environmental justice issues and ultimately, only benefiting those with access to an automobile and …
