Development Of Successful Sex Determination Method Of Bovine Embryos Utilizing Embryo Biopsy And Pcr, William E. Plummer, Debbie Beckett Feb 2006

Development Of Successful Sex Determination Method Of Bovine Embryos Utilizing Embryo Biopsy And Pcr, William E. Plummer, Debbie Beckett

Animal Science

Producers of domestic livestock strive to improve genetic influences in their herds. This requires identification, and propagation of animals that demonstrate desirable characteristics. The more animals available from which to select, the greater the opportunity to discover high-performance animals. Predetermination of the sex of offspring would provide a greater number of males or females from which to select the top individuals that will contribute the genetics to the next generation. Many attempts at sexing semen and identification of sex in preimplantation embryos have been mildly successful. However, recent advances in gene amplification enable investigators to use sex-specific probes to determine …

Dendritic cells (DC) are often arranged in planar layers in tissues with high antigenic exposure, such as skin and mucosae. Providing an en face view, this arrangement optimizes in situ analysis regarding morphology (even of individual dendrites), topographic distribution (regular/clustered) and quantification. The few reports on human genital DC usually utilize single markers and conventional sections, restricting immunolabelling only to cell parts sectioned by the cut. To better assess DC in situ, we labelled epithelial sheets, prepared from fresh cervix biopsies, with antibodies to major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-CII, CD1a and Langerin, revealing (with each of these markers) a dense …

Cytokine Response At High Altitude: Effects Of Exercise And Antioxidants At 4300 M, Todd A. Hagobian, Kevin A. Jacobs, Andrew W. Subudhi, Jill A. Fattor, Paul B. Rock, Stephen R. Muza, Charles S. Fulco, Barry Braun, Ann Grediagin, Robert S. Mazzeo, Allen Cymerman, Anne L. Friedlander

Kinesiology and Public Health

Purpose: This study tested the hypothesis that antioxidant supplementation would attenuate plasma cytokine (IL-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α), and C-reactive protein (CRP) concentrations at rest and in response to exercise at 4300-m elevation.
Methods: A total of 17 recreationally trained men were matched and assigned to an antioxidant (N = 9) or placebo (N = 8) group in a double-blinded fashion. At sea level (SL), energy expenditure was controlled and subjects were weight stable. Then, 3 wk before and throughout high altitude (HA), an antioxidant supplement (10,000 IU β-carotene, 200 IU α-tocopherol acetate, 250 mg ascorbic …

The Impacts Of Climate Change In Coastal Marine Systems, Christopher D.G. Harley, A. Randall Hughes, Kristin M. Hultgren, Benjamin G. Miner, Cascade J.B. Sorte, Carol S. Thornber, Laura F. Rodriguez, Lars Tomanek, Susan L. Williams Jan 2006

The Impacts Of Climate Change In Coastal Marine Systems, Christopher D.G. Harley, A. Randall Hughes, Kristin M. Hultgren, Benjamin G. Miner, Cascade J.B. Sorte, Carol S. Thornber, Laura F. Rodriguez, Lars Tomanek, Susan L. Williams

Biological Sciences

Anthropogenically induced global climate change has profound implications for marine ecosystems and the economic and social systems that depend upon them. The relationship between temperature and individual performance is reasonably well understood, and much climate-related research has focused on potential shifts in distribution and abundance driven directly by temperature. However, recent work has revealed that both abiotic changes and biological responses in the ocean will be substantially more complex. For example, changes in ocean chemistry may be more important than changes in temperature for the performance and survival of many organisms. Ocean circulation, which drives larval transport, will also change, …

Numerical Evaluation Of The Flowfield For A High Fineness Ratio Body With Drag Brakes, Russell M. Cummings, James A. Divine, Thomas R. Yechout, David C. Wetlesen, Joseph J. Kealos Jan 2006

Numerical Evaluation Of The Flowfield For A High Fineness Ratio Body With Drag Brakes, Russell M. Cummings, James A. Divine, Thomas R. Yechout, David C. Wetlesen, Joseph J. Kealos

Aerospace Engineering

The Advanced Remote Ground Unattended Sensor (ARGUS) utilizes drag brakes to control its terminal velocity during flight. Computational fluid dynamics predictions were performed at Mach numbers between 0.20 and 0.95 with a full scale model of the ARGUS configuration at conditions to match wind tunnel testing that has been performed at the USAFA Subsonic Wind Tunnel. Configurations consist of brakes fully deployed for a nominal brake fin and a perforated brake fin. Steady-stated computations were performed using the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model at angles of attack between 0 degrees to 20 degrees at roll angles of 0 degrees and 45 degrees. …

Light Motion Machines, Thomas Fowler, Iv Jan 2006

Light Motion Machines, Thomas Fowler, Iv

Architecture

Students worked in four teams of three to four each and were assigned the construction of a light motion machine. Teams developed devices, which were an interpretation of László Moholy-Nagy’s 1930’s Space Light Modular Machine. These machines had to have moving parts for the purpose of studying light and shadow projections in motion. László Moholy-Nagy’s Space Light Modular Machine was a mechanically driven rotating kaleidoscope projecting ever-changing patterns of light, shadow, and color. Students were provided information on Moholy-Nagy’s machine and also shown a range of interpretations students developed in a previous studio.
