Effects Of Damage Arrestment Devices On The Fatigue Life Of Impacted Composite Sandwich Beams, Yvette Vanessa Wood Mar 2013

Effects Of Damage Arrestment Devices On The Fatigue Life Of Impacted Composite Sandwich Beams, Yvette Vanessa Wood

Master's Theses

The use of composite sandwich panels is rapidly increasing in the aerospace industry. In these applications, thin composite face sheets are typically co-cured to foam or honeycomb cores. One of the greatest concerns in these types of applications is face-core delamination because it can ultimately lead to catastrophic failure of the structure. Further, the effects of foreign object damage on composite sandwich structures are often catastrophic. Damage to the structure is often undetectable through visual inspection, leading to concerns of unknown interlaminar damage through the life of the structure, which can cause a catastrophic failure. This research determines the effectiveness …

Hydrologic Modeling Of The San Joaquin Valley Watershed For Purposes Of Nitrate Analysis, Stephen Carl Clayton Mar 2013

Hydrologic Modeling Of The San Joaquin Valley Watershed For Purposes Of Nitrate Analysis, Stephen Carl Clayton

Master's Theses

The San Joaquin Valley is regarded as one of the most productive agricultural regions in the world. This extensive agriculture has, however, caused extensive pollution of both ground water and surface water. This thesis develops a hydrologic model of the surface and ground waters of the San Joaquin Valley. Such modeling is useful in the development and implementation of water quality regulations such as Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs). A properly validated watershed simulation model can supplement data collection and can account for watershed characteristics including topography, soils, climate, land cover, anthropogenic activities, as well as simulate watershed responses including …

Consumer Evaluation Of Low Sodium Mozzarella Cheese And Development Of A Novel Method For Evaluating Emotions, Lauren Alyse Collinsworth Mar 2013

Consumer Evaluation Of Low Sodium Mozzarella Cheese And Development Of A Novel Method For Evaluating Emotions, Lauren Alyse Collinsworth

Master's Theses

Mozzarella cheese is currently the highest consumed cheese in the United States. The popularity of mozzarella cheese is typically attributed to the high consumption rates of pizza cheese and string cheese; both of which are low moisture part skim (LMPS) mozzarella cheese. A single serving of LMPS mozzarella cheese contains approximately 8% of the daily value (DV) for sodium, a mineral which is currently consumed in excess among most Americans. On average, one in three Americans has hypertension. This condition is strongly associated with excessive sodium intake, and it is a leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease and stroke in …

Computational Problems In Introductory Physics: Lessons From A Bead On A Wire, Thomas J. Bensky, Matthew J. Moelter Mar 2013

Computational Problems In Introductory Physics: Lessons From A Bead On A Wire, Thomas J. Bensky, Matthew J. Moelter

Physics

We have found that incorporating computer programming into introductory physics requires problems suited for numerical treatment while still maintaining ties with the analytical themes in a typical introductory-level university physics course. In this paper, we discuss a numerical adaptation of a system commonly encountered in the introductory physics curriculum: the dynamics of an object constrained to move along a curved path. A numerical analysis of this problem that includes a computer animation can provide many insights and pedagogical avenues not possible with the usual analytical treatment. We present two approaches for computing the instantaneous kinematic variables of an object constrained …

Good Eats, Elizabeth Foreman Feb 2013

Good Eats, Elizabeth Foreman

Between the Species

If one believes that vegetarianism is morally obligatory, there are numerous ways to argue for that conclusion. In this paper, classic utilitarian and rights-based attempts to ground this obligation are considered, as well as Cora Diamond’s reframing of the debate in terms of the proper way to view other animals. After discussion of these three ways to ground the obligation and their problems, an attitude-based approach inspired by Diamond’s view (though different from it in important ways) is advanced. It is argued that such a view, by focusing moral attention on the attitudes of agents as opposed to the actions …

A Socratic Method For Surveying Students’ Readiness To Study Evolution, William D. Stansfield Feb 2013

A Socratic Method For Surveying Students’ Readiness To Study Evolution, William D. Stansfield

Biological Sciences

Before beginning a series of presentations on evolution, it would be prudent to survey the general level of students’ understanding of prerequisite basic concepts of reproduction, heredity, ontology, and phenotypic diversity so that teachers can avoid devoting time to well-known subjects of general knowledge and can spend more time on subjects that are unknown, forgotten, or misunderstood by most students. This article outlines a Socratic method for surveying and teaching to address these concerns.

Teaching Evolution & The Nature Of Science Via The History Of Debates About The Levels At Which Natural Selection Operates, William D. Stansfield

Biological Sciences

Students should not graduate from high school without understanding that scientific debates are essential components of scientific methodology. This article presents a brief history of ongoing debates regarding the hypothesis that group selection is an evolutionary mechanism, and it serves as an example of the role that debates play in correcting faulty ideas and stimulating new research in the pursuit of extending scientific knowledge.

A Review Of The Artisan Cheese Industry, Jeffrey Mason Feb 2013

A Review Of The Artisan Cheese Industry, Jeffrey Mason

Dairy Science

The aim of this study was to determine the financial profitability of artisan cheese making, why it has become popular, processing differences compared commercial processing and any issues within the industry. Many studies suggest that the consumers are the driving force behind the increased popularity of artisan cheese. Consumption of specialty or artisan cheese grew by 75% between the years of 1994 and 2003. This movement in the American culture towards locally made small scale products can also be observed in other industries. The consumers preferences have changed they are now willing to pay more for a high quality product. …

The Moral Patient, The Honorable Fiduciary, And A Faltering Liberalism: An Exploration Of Professor Bryant's Call To Animal Respect, Iris J. Goodwin Jan 2013

The Moral Patient, The Honorable Fiduciary, And A Faltering Liberalism: An Exploration Of Professor Bryant's Call To Animal Respect, Iris J. Goodwin

Between the Species

Professor Bryant’s article – which seeks to discover whether aspects of an anticruelty statute can be based directly on a call to virtuous conduct – is a provocative piece of scholarship that harbors a much larger question: Can a general principle mandating full respect for animals be developed out of the moral methodology inhering in virtue ethics? Insights garnered in this rejoinder are meant to stand alongside those in Professor Bryant’s article to lend deep moral grounding to animal-respect as well as provide intimations of the way virtue ethics as a moral methodology might yield determinate answers to moral questions. …

Solar Energy Collection Analysis Tool For Conceptual Aircraft Design, Grant M. Glazebrook, Robert A. Mcdonald Jan 2013

Solar Energy Collection Analysis Tool For Conceptual Aircraft Design, Grant M. Glazebrook, Robert A. Mcdonald

Aerospace Engineering

As battery energy storage and solar cell technology improve, solar aircraft are increasingly being considered for high altitude long endurance missions. Although solar vehicles may theoretically remain on station indefinitely using the sun as a power source, their design and feasibility is sensitive to mission planning details as specific as the time history of the vehicle’s deck orientation relative to the sun; the energy available for capture by the on-board solar array is governed by the solar incidence angle, and at certain orientations, the vehicle may cast shadows on itself and further reduce its energy capture capabilities. To quantify these …

Shared Responsibility In A Multispecies Playground, Marcus Baynes-Rock Jan 2013

Shared Responsibility In A Multispecies Playground, Marcus Baynes-Rock

Between the Species

While conducting research on urbanised hyenas in Harar, Ethiopia, I was approached by a young hyena named Willi. In contrast to other hyenas, who tolerated my presence but otherwise had little interest in me, Willi insisted on some kind of engagement. Through biting, chase play, combing, following and standing by one other, Willi and I went beyond our species limitations and created an improvised intersubjectivity based on a will to understand. However, our friendship led to some harmful consequences for which I felt responsible. This led me to question the ethics of engagement with non-humans: if unforeseen harms can result …

Rescuing Acetylcholinesterase From Nerve Agent Inhibition: Protein Dynamics Driven Drug Discovery, Aiyana M. Emigh, Brian Bennion

STAR Program Research Presentations

Severe morbidity and mortality consequences result from irreversible inhibition of human acetylcholinesterase by organophosphates (OPs). Oxime-based reactivators are currently the only available treatments but lack efficacy in the central nervous system (CNS) where the most damage occurs. Computational docking and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations reveal complex structural barriers that may reduce oxime efficacy. These results may guide future drug designs of more effective countermeasures.

Archaeological Perspectives On Prehistoric Conservation In Western North America, Terry L. Jones Jan 2013

Archaeological Perspectives On Prehistoric Conservation In Western North America, Terry L. Jones

Social Sciences

The archaeological record represents a potentially critical source of information on past relationships between human hunters and populations of game animals. Archaeological research in the last 40–50 years has produced two alternative views on these relationships: one that Native people were knowledgeable, benevolent conservators of game and an alternative that suggests that they depleted and suppressed game populations through overhunting. A brief review of the history of this research shows that neither position is well-supported by empirical facts and that researchers have demonstrated a certain overzealousness in attempting to support one or the other of these interpretations. The facts are …

Geothermal Injection Well Monitoring, Timothy Rempher Jan 2013

Geothermal Injection Well Monitoring, Timothy Rempher

Electrical Engineering

People depend on electricity all over the world. They depend on it for anything from drying their hair to global communications to heating up food. Many methods of power generation exist, each using a different fuel such as nuclear power, natural gas, coal, wind or the sun. This project focuses on a power plant which uses the naturally hot water in the ground to generate electricity. This process of generating power is called “Geothermal.” This project consists of two parts. The first and major part is the design logic of a PLC program that monitors the flow rate of an …
