Russian-English Homoglyphs, Homographs, And Homographic Translations, Tristan Miller Aug 2013

Russian-English Homoglyphs, Homographs, And Homographic Translations, Tristan Miller

Word Ways

A homoglyph is a letter whose visual form is more or less identical to that of a letter in some other alphabet. For example, the Cyrillic uppercase letters A, B, E, K, M, H, O, P, C, T, Y, and X all resemble letters from the Latin alphabet (though they do not necessarily have the same sound values).

Compositional Process Of "Through The Looking Glass", Philip Smith Aug 2013

Compositional Process Of "Through The Looking Glass", Philip Smith

Word Ways

To begin my composition, I started with the chess board that the whole Through the Looking Glass is based on. Since a chess board is eight squares by eight squares, I decided to base my composition off of an octatonic scale, a scale that contains eight notes rather then the traditional seven of a major or minor scale.

Revisiting The Mandaeans And The New Testament, James F. Mcgrath Aug 2013

Revisiting The Mandaeans And The New Testament, James F. Mcgrath

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The Mandaeans have been known to scholars for as long as there has been modern scholarship. Thanks to advances in technology, you can now find some of their ancient texts online, and videos of their baptismal rituals on YouTube. Yet as fascinating as the Mandaeans are, and as much as modern technologies can facilitate greater familiarity with them, the amount of attention that they receive is surprisingly sparse – although there are encouraging signs that that is at least beginning to change.

Semantic And Phonological False Memories In Adults' First And Second Language, Amber Victoria Sapp May 2013

Semantic And Phonological False Memories In Adults' First And Second Language, Amber Victoria Sapp

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

I explored second language acquisition in adults by examining false memories for semantically and phonologically related word lists in both the participants' first language and second language. I expected less proficient bilinguals who are initially acquiring their second language would make more phonological false memory errors, like children learning their first language. In contrast, I anticipated that more proficient bilinguals would make more semantic false memory errors in the DRM paradigm as the semantic stores for their two languages overlap more fully. Forty-one English-Spanish bilinguals (High Proficiency: n = 17; Low Proficiency: n = 24) completed a false memory task …

Dancing With The Gods; Santeria's Historical Context In Eastern Cuba, Lauren Reed May 2013

Dancing With The Gods; Santeria's Historical Context In Eastern Cuba, Lauren Reed

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Santeria is a religion that originated in Cuba in the 1600's and grew out of the tensions between two ethnic groups: Spanish slave masters and West African slaves. Their religions- Catholicism and Ifa, respectively- coalesced to create a syncretism, or amalgamation of multiple concepts. This syncretism, Santeria, is an extraordinarily complex religion through which adherents communicate with God and deities called orishas using prayer, music, dance, divination, and rituals. Though many claim certain truths about Santeria, they are often contradictory and unfounded, making it difficult to accurately understand the religion. However, with effort, these truths can be pieced together to …

Overlaps Part 2, Susan Thorpe

Word Ways

In the first of the letter overlap arrangements below, the offspring are obtained from the parent word by reading from L to R. However, unlike the L to R arrangements in Overlaps Part 1, the offspring from the end of the parent word >1 precedes the offspring from the beginning of the parent word >. The pairs of offspring form a phrase-like configuration or are related in some way.

Word Ways

I like lists-in fact, I love lists. I like lists of words, such as the chemical elements, the days of the week, the months of the year, the letters of the Greek alphabet, the countries of the world, US state capitals, Oscar-winning films, the names of the stations on London's Underground railway, the complete discography of Elvis Presley-I could go on. And as many Word Ways readers will be aware, I like transposing items from those lists.

Been There, Pun That! Wordplay In Real-Life Situations, Don Hauptman

Word Ways

One fine day recently, I spotted in the news a reference to an organization a friend works with. I emailed the item to her along with a note: "Aren't these 'your people'?"

She confirmed my hunch and added that she had passed the information along to her colleagues. I then riposted, "Clearly, you practice the ancient biblical maxim: 'Let thy people know'!"

In two previous Word Ways articles (February 2006 and February 2012), I discussed the art of using puns in everyday situations. Both were festooned with examples from my own experience.

Lewis Carroll loved ciphers. Between 1858 and 1868 he invented four and recorded them in his diary: two matrix ciphers and two polyalphabetic ciphers: the Telegraph Cipher and the Alphabet Cipher. He submitted the latter two for publication, and personally used them to write letters to his child friends.
