Directed Word Chain Networks (Part 3), Leonard J. Gordon Nov 1991

Directed Word Chain Networks (Part 3), Leonard J. Gordon

Word Ways

This is the third of a series of articles on directed word chain networks; the first two can be found in the August 1991 Word Ways. Specifically focussing on (8, 4) word chains, it is divided into two sections. THe first introduced a two-dimensional construction called a mesh; the second updates and extends Part 2, using an enlarged word list. All terms are defined in Part 1.

Right On The Money, Leonard R. N. Ashley Nov 1991

Right On The Money, Leonard R. N. Ashley

Word Ways

If a man runs after money, he's money-mad; if he keeps it, he's a capitalist; if he spends it, she's a playboy; if he doesn't get it, he's a ne'er-do-well; if he doesn't try to get it, he's a parasite; and if he accumulates it after a lifetime of hard work, people call him a fool who never got anything out of life.

Eight-Letter Metalleges, John J. Bulten Nov 1991

Eight-Letter Metalleges, John J. Bulten

Word Ways

In the February 1991 Word Ways, Darryl Francis exhibited a type-collection of mtalleges (letter-swap transposals, as sLAve to sALve, or sKaTe to sTaKe) of two through ten letters. This article examines eight-letter metalleges in more detail, listing all that can be found in the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary. In general, adjacent letter-swaps are commoner more than distant ones, especially those that occur near the start or the end of a word. The full list of 283 OSPD metalleges is given below.

Easter Island Scrabble Championships, Jeff Grant

Word Ways

Every eleven years a unique event takes place on an isolated outcrop in the eastern Pacific. With its mysterious ancient monoliths brooding-over the barren landscape, Rapanui, as it is known to the original inhabitants, seems an ideal location for the world's most unusual Scrabble meeting.

Afterberners: An Assemblage Of Nouns, Peter Newby

Word Ways

The English language owes a debt of gratitude of Dame Juliana Berners. She was born circa 1388 and is believed to have been the prioress of a nunnery near St. Albans, Hertforshire, England. Her major contribution to literature is "The Boke of St. Albans," a treatise on hawking, hunting and heraldry first published in 1486.

Einschwein's Magic Numbers, Lee Sallows Aug 1991

Einschwein's Magic Numbers, Lee Sallows

Word Ways

Paying a recent call on my old friend Professor Einschwein, the world-famous Transylvanian logologist, I was privileged to learn about his latest numerological invention. Drawing forth a curious pack of cards, he showed me that each card bore a single letter of the alphabet on one side and single integer, sometimes positive, sometimes negative, on the other.

Directed Word Chain Networks (Part 1), A. Ross Eckler Aug 1991

Directed Word Chain Networks (Part 1), A. Ross Eckler

Word Ways

The February 1991 Word Ways introduced the concept of a word string network: a set of n-letter words connected by directed links. Word A is joined to Word B by a directed link if Word B is formed by removing the first letter of WOrd A and placing a letter (not neceassrily the same one) at the end of Word A (such as TEA to EAT, or SAFRI ato ARID). Note that a link does not connect EAT to ATE to TEA.

Directed Word Chain Networks (Part 2), Leonard Gordon

Word Ways

This is one of a series of articles on directed word chain networks. The concept of a directed word chain network, together with definitions of various terms used to characterize such networks, was introduced in Part 1 of this series. The concept of a word chain dates back at least to Dudeney's 1925 book, "The World's Best Word Puzzles" (largely reprinted as "300 Best Word Puzzles" by Dover in 1968).

A Ragman Lure, Pram Nag And Lido, Douglas C. Greenwood

Word Ways

While writing this article about computers vs. the English language, I searched my brain for some eye-catching title like King Kong Meets Godzills. However, the confrontation is a somewhat more intellectual concept than such a title would connote. During the last ten years or so, there have appeared several articles about current attempts to manipulate English words by means of a digital computer.

Ominous Worldly Maxims, Christopher Mcmanus Aug 1991

Ominous Worldly Maxims, Christopher Mcmanus

Word Ways

Each word in the above title has a repeated letter. Remove those repeated letters and new words emerge: MINUS, WORDY, AXIS. Such words, which drop a repeated letter to form a new word, number in the thousands. When technical and proper nouns are ignored, they still number around a thousand. Such words amuse us by their transformations, and give rise to several non-trivial studies.

The Best 9x9 Square Yet, Eric Albert Aug 1991

The Best 9x9 Square Yet, Eric Albert

Word Ways

On December 28, 1897 the first 9X9 word square in history was published. It was constructed by Arthur F. Holt, the master formist of his time, and appeared in the Chicago Inter-Ocean, back when newspapers were enlightened enough to carry that sort of thing. Given the incredible difficulty of building such a form, it is not surprising that the square contained words taken from a variety of sources.

Solution Of The Gematric Equations, Lee Sallows Aug 1991

Solution Of The Gematric Equations, Lee Sallows

Word Ways

Some things are so obvious that it takes centuries before they are noticed. So it is with the gematric equations, only recently brought to light. Gematria comes down to us from the ancient Greeks, the letters of whose newly-acquired Phoenician alphabet they used to represent numbers.

Leigh Mercer, Palindromist, A. Ross Eckler Aug 1991

Leigh Mercer, Palindromist, A. Ross Eckler

Word Ways

These seven words have earned Leigh Mercer a place among the logological immortals. Ask the man on the street for an example of a palindrome, and (if he knows what you are talking about) you will likely have this quoted back at you. (Or, perhaps, "Madam, I'm Adam.") But it is ironic that Mercer did not want to be remembered in this way; he chided me once in a letter (October 1971) "...I am writing again to make sure that you don't think of me purely as a 'drome man. I have had a number of hobbies, am only interested …
