We know about Ricola. But hamburgers? Rumor says that German sailors in an American port put chopped beef on bread and named it “Hamburg” after their hometown. Whether this is true or not is unclear.

What is documented, however, is that Texan Fletcher Davis sold “hamburger steaks” at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, Missouri. They consisted of a beef patty – a flat minced steak patty – with sweet pickles, mustard and onions, sandwiched between two halves of a bread roll.

So far so good.

But who invented the cheeseburger?

Her assignments are diverse, ranging from indepth feature stories and environmental issues to major news events across a wide geographic area from North America to China.

The Swiss American Historical Society had a table at Swiss National Day, which was celebrated on the grounds of the Swiss Embassy and Ambassador’s Residence in Washington, DC on Saturday, July 26th. While overall turnout was down from previous years, we had over 20 visitors stop by our table. Many had never heard of us before and we gained a few new members! We gave away extra copies of the June issue of the SAHS Review and talked about our recently published book, Helvetic Heights: A Human History of the Swiss Alps and William Tell virtual event for August 14th.

Background: Human trafficking affects millions of people worldwide with multiple adverse outcomes including psychopathology. Although research on human trafficking has become abundant in other academic disciplines (e.g., public health, criminology, social work), healthcare research specific to the mental health treatment of survivors remains limited. Objective: The purpose of this study was to gather recommendations from professionals about mental health treatment of trafficking survivors. Method: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 multidisciplinary professionals working with trafficking survivors. David Fritsche from Einsiedeln runs the successful Swiss restaurant STABLE in the U.S. capital city of Washington, DC, together with his business partner Silvan Kraemer. At the Swiss Embassy’s Soirée Suisse, held on September 10, the two were honored with the Gallatin Award. The Gallatin Award is given annually at the Soirée Suisse to an organization that embodies the attributes of Albert Gallatin. The award celebrates the close ties between Switzerland and the United States, as “sister republics”, and honors special Swiss achievements. STABLE was recognized for its role in strengthening the relationship between the two countries through food. The …

Within days of John Calvin’s death on May 27, 1564, his mantle of leadership passed to Theodore Beza (1520-1605). Geneva found itself on the world’s stage as various groups, such as Catholics and Anabaptists, hoped to overturn the newfound Calvinist establishment. The crucial forty year period between the death of Calvin (1564) and the death of Beza (1605) determined whether or not Calvinism would be a lasting force in Geneva and elsewhere. Historian William Monter attributes much of Geneva’s growth and stability during this period to the intellectual magnetism of Calvinism.

Generally file formats on modern systems are single byte streams, and there are many tools available to help identify and determine what software is needed to make use of the format. When dealing with formats born on Macintosh systems, a single byte stream is often not all that is needed to make use of the formats. Pyrolysis Of Foliage From 24 U.S. Plant Species With Recommendations For Physics-Basedwildland Fire Models, Mahsa Alizadeh, Thomas H. Fletcher

Pyrolysis of 24 samples of foliage from three U.S. regions with frequent wildland fires (Southeastern U.S., northern Utah and Southern California) was studied in a fuel-rich flat-flame burner system at 765 ◦C (for Southeastern U.S. samples) and 725 ◦C (for northern Utah and Southern California species), with a heating rate of approximately 180 ◦C/s. These conditions were selected to mimic the conditions of wildland fires. Individual plant samples were introduced to the high temperature zone in a flat-flame burner and pyrolysis products were collected. Tar was extracted and later analyzed by GC/MS. Light gases were collected and analyzed by GC/TCD. …

Accurate prediction of the normal boiling point (NBP) of organic compounds is essential for the design and optimization of chemical processes. This is especially true for modern practice since experimental measurements of many compounds of contemporary importance are difficult to perform due to cost, purity, and stability issues. Traditional methods, such as group contribution (GC) and quantitative structure–property relationship (QSPR) approaches, are limited by inflexibility and diminishing accuracy in these situations. The chlorine evolution reaction (CER) in molten CaCl₂ plays a critical role in high-temperature electrochemical processes, including chlorination, metal refining, and used nuclear fuel treatment. This study evaluates the performance of gold (Au), platinum (Pt), glassy carbon (GC), and graphite anodes for the CER under consistent electrochemical conditions. Anode performance was assessed based on chlorine (Cl₂) gas evolution, material robustness, and kinetic parameters. Cl₂ generation was directly confirmed using quadrupole mass spectrometry for Pt, GC, and graphite anodes. GC and graphite demonstrated stable and sustained CER activity. Origami-inspired mechanisms combine compact, lightweight, reconfig- urable devices, yet despite decades of growth in origami theory, industrial uptake remains limited. As a result, origami predominately appears as prototypes or in low-volume, bespoke applications. Manufacturing (which has received little development) remains the chief bottleneck: most origami fabrication routes are still under-explored, labor-intensive, and fundamentally unsuited to scale. This dissertation addresses that barrier by establishing a process-centric framework for origami manufacturing and demonstrates fabrication workflows capable of transitioning designs from prototypes to production. The ability to electrochemically separate individual species in a pyrochemical reprocessing salt relies on first being able to detect a separation in their reaction potentials. This requires the ability to measure reaction potentials with extreme precision. In this work, we introduce a novel technique called serial open circuit potentiometry (SOCP) and demonstrate its effectiveness at precisely measuring metal deposition reaction potentials. SOCP has several advantages over traditional open circuit potentiometry, including its abilities to quantify the error of measured equilibrium potentials by averaging many individual OCP measurements, determine overpotential deposition nucleation potentials to instrument precision, and simultaneously determine the nucleation …

This paper explores how Chinese ESL students utilize Generative AI (Gen AI) in their writing processes, focusing on the stages of writing, specific methods of use, and language practices. The study was carried out in an English-medium instruction (EMI) environment at a Sino-American university in China. Data were collected through online surveys with 157 participants and follow-up interviews with nine students. Quantitative analysis of the survey data uncovered general patterns, while analysis of the interview data, using Polio & Freedman’s (2017) coding method to identify themes, provided detailed illustrations. Task Prioritization In Concurrent Speaking And Visuomotor Tasks In Younger And Older Adults, Naomi Wynn

The present study examined the ability of younger and older adults to prioritize one task over another under divided attention conditions. The speech task involved the repetition of sentences that included specific vowel targets, and the non-speech task was a visuomotor pursuit rotor task which required tracking a moving target on a computer. The participants were twenty young adults between the ages of 18 and 30 and twenty older adults above the age of 60.
