Roar Of The Dragon: An Explorative Precursor In Film Scoring, Hyrum Kohler Apr 2022

Roar Of The Dragon: An Explorative Precursor In Film Scoring, Hyrum Kohler

Student Works

Roar of the Dragon (1932) was an important work in film composer Max Steiner’s transitional period before King Kong’s success. While other substantial films of this period have been analyzed and treated in regard in the film community, Roar of the Dragon is a relatively overlooked entry that shares many similarities with King Kong and Steiner’s other early lengthy scores. Because the original score of Roar of the Dragon has been lost, the work I did in 2020 as a research assistant in the Harold B. Library’s department of cataloging and metadata to recreate the score through ear transcription allowed …

Age-Related Differences In Food-Specific Inhibitory Control: Electrophysiological And Behavioral Evidence In Healthy Aging, Whitney D. Allen Apr 2022

Age-Related Differences In Food-Specific Inhibitory Control: Electrophysiological And Behavioral Evidence In Healthy Aging, Whitney D. Allen

Theses and Dissertations

The number of older adults is estimated to double from 52 million to 95 million by 2060. Approximately 80-85% of older adults are diagnosed with a chronic health condition. Many of these chronic health conditions are influenced by diet and exercise, suggesting improved diet and eating behaviors could improve health-related outcomes. One factor that might improve dietary habits in older adults is food-related inhibitory control. We tested whether food-related inhibitory control, using behavioral (response time, error rate) and scalp-recorded event-related potential (ERP; N2 and P3 components) measures of food-related inhibitory control differed between younger and older adults over age 55. …

Acoustofluidics For Simultaneous Nanoparticle-Based Drug Loading And Exosome Encapsulation, Zeyu Wang, Joseph Rich, Nanjing Hao, Yuyang Gu, Chuyi Chen, Shujie Yang, Peiran Zhang, Tony Jun Huang Apr 2022

Acoustofluidics For Simultaneous Nanoparticle-Based Drug Loading And Exosome Encapsulation, Zeyu Wang, Joseph Rich, Nanjing Hao, Yuyang Gu, Chuyi Chen, Shujie Yang, Peiran Zhang, Tony Jun Huang

Faculty Publications

Nanocarrier and exosome encapsulation has been found to significantly increase the efficacy of targeted drug delivery while also minimizing unwanted side effects. However, the development of exosome-encapsulated drug nanocarriers is limited by low drug loading efficiencies and/or complex, time-consuming drug loading processes. Herein, we have developed an acoustofluidic device that simultaneously performs both drug loading and exosome encapsulation. By synergistically leveraging the acoustic radiation force, acoustic microstreaming, and shear stresses in a rotating droplet, the concentration, and fusion of exosomes, drugs, and porous silica nanoparticles is achieved. The final product consists of drug-loaded silica nanocarriers that are encased within an …

Performance Of Resin Injection Ground Improvement In Silty Sand Based On Blast-Induced Liquefaction Testing In Christchurch, New Zealand, David Harold Blake Apr 2022

Performance Of Resin Injection Ground Improvement In Silty Sand Based On Blast-Induced Liquefaction Testing In Christchurch, New Zealand, David Harold Blake

Theses and Dissertations

Polyurethane resin injection is a treatment being considered as a replacement for traditional methods of ground improvement. It has been used to re-level foundations and concrete slabs that have settled over time. Additional claimed benefits of the treatment have been noted recently, including improved factors of safety against soil liquefaction and reduced earthquake-induced settlements. To investigate the capability of the polyurethane resin injection treatment to mitigate liquefaction, two full-scale blast liquefaction tests were performed; one test was conducted in an improved panel (IP), an 8 m circular area treated with the polyurethane resin in a 1.2 m triangular grid from …

Theses and Dissertations

Dating App Facilitated Sexual Assault (DAppSA) is a new phenomenon and growing concern. Research on DAppSA is extremely limited. This study aimed to identify unique victim and assault characteristics associated with DAppSAs. A retrospective SAMFE chart review of patients (N = 3,413) from 2017 to 2020 was conducted. Sexual assault nurse examiners completed SAMFEs. Inclusion criteria for DAppSA cases included 1) victim was 14 years of age or older; 2) victim indicated they met the perpetrator on a dating website or app; 3) the SA occurred at the initial in-person meeting; 4) victim had a SAMFE with evidence collection. DAppSAs …

Characterizing Equivalence And Correctness Properties Of Dynamic Mode Decomposition And Subspace Identification Algorithms, Samuel Gregory Neff Apr 2022

Characterizing Equivalence And Correctness Properties Of Dynamic Mode Decomposition And Subspace Identification Algorithms, Samuel Gregory Neff

Theses and Dissertations

We examine the related nature of two identification algorithms, subspace identification (SID) and Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD), and their correctness properties over a broad range of problems. This investigation begins by noting the strong relationship between the two algorithms, both drawing significantly on the pseudoinverse calculation using singular value decomposition, and ultimately revealing that DMD can be viewed as a substep of SID. We then perform extensive computational studies, characterizing the performance of SID on problems of various model orders and noise levels. Specifically, we generate 10,000 random systems for each model order and noise level, calculating the average identification …

Frequency And Magnitude Of Obstacles And Helpful Behavior Items In End-Of-Life Care As Perceived By Nurses Working In Critical Access Hospitals, Shalyn C. Larsen

Theses and Dissertations

Background: Twenty percent of Americans live in rural areas where most of their healthcare is provided in Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs). It is unknown how frequently obstacle and helpful behavior items occur in End-of-Life (EOL) care in CAHs. Objectives: To determine the frequency of occurrence scores of obstacle and helpful behavior items in providing EOL care in CAHs. To also determine which obstacles and helpful behaviors have the greatest or least impact on EOL care based on the magnitude scores. Methods: A questionnaire was sent to nurses working in 39 CAHs in the United States. Nurse participants were asked to …
