Employing The Characterization And Parameterization Framework (Cap) To Develop An Empirical Innovation-Diffusion Agent-Based Model Of Green Infrastructure Adoption On Private Residential Yards., Hazem Ahmed, Dawn Parker
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Incorporating social-science theories to represent human decision-making in data-driven models is required, particularly when modeling the underlying social determinants of adopting pro-environmental innovations. Our agent-based model (ABM) investigates households' adoption of stormwater green infrastructure (GI) - e.g., rain gardens - on private residential yards in Kitchener/Waterloo, Ontario. We propose combining Rogers's diffusion of innovation theory (DOI) (2003) with Smajgl Barreteau (2017) characterization and parameterization framework (CAP) to develop an empirical ABM, DRAIIN. At the micro-level, we use a municipal survey (Aquafor Beech Ltd., Freeman Associates 2015) to parameterize agents' attributes (e.g., ownership status) and behavioral data inputs (e.g., yard maintenance …

The proportion of world’s population living in the cities has grown exponentially in the last 5 decades and it is expected to reach over 9.3 billion by 2050. The rising number of urban dwellers is due to the increase in the spatial extent of cities and metropolitan areas. Urban densification is a mechanism for intensifying the physical form and realizing compact cities rather than sprawling urban areas. Spatial patterns of urban structure is frequently concomitant with densification. In order to understand the relation, it is relevant to study different causative factors, which can be categorized into physical, economic, environmental, accessibility …

Modelling Application For A Multiple Ecosystem Services Quantification Within The Geospatial Decision Support System Landsupport, Angela Puig-Sirera, Antonio Coppola, Angelo Basile, Piero Manna
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Ecosystem services (ES) in the last years have been a topic in the spotlight of scientific community and policy, being a global challenge in the agenda of European environmental policies (e.g., European Green Deal). The research community aims to classify and quantify these services but to date there are no standardized approaches. Rather, different approaches are used that are expert-based or empirical, qualitative rather than quantitative, applied depending on the spatial scale and output required. Here we present our approach to the quantitative evaluation of provision and regulating ESs, in which the soil is considered a key factor in regulating …

A multitude of behavioral and social factors control how people/institutions/collectivities (i.e., hereafter called actors) perceive, process, value, communicate, and use (or not) information in decision making. These factors include various forms of discounting, in-group/out-group processes, biases, beliefs, heuristics, values (including moral and social norms) – as well as information perception, processing and communication issues. Game theory, metagame theory, drama theory, decision theory, agent-based modeling, role-playing and other experimental games are some of the ways that have been used to model and predict how different actors react to information and use it in decision making. Some of these techniques may be …

Managing Urban Water System Trade-Offs Using Smart Storages, Ruijie Liang, Mark A. Thyer, Holger R. Maier, Graeme C. Dandy
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Water balances in urban environments are changing as a result of population growth, urbanisation and climate and land use change. This has a number of potential impacts, including increased demand for water, increased flooding and a reduction in water quality, especially in receiving waters. The optimal placement and control of smart storages throughout urban catchments provide an opportunity to better manage these impacts, as this can reduce flood peaks, provide a source of water and improve downstream water quality. In this paper, the trade-offs between flood reduction, water supply benefits, water quality benefits, required total storage volume and costs are …

The Environmental Fate, Transformation, And Speciation Of Nano Copper Oxide In A Freshwater Environment, Bianca N. Ross, Christopher D. Knightes
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The use and production of engineered nanomaterials have grown rapidly over the past few decades due to their unique properties and versatility. As a result of widespread industrial applications, nanomaterials have evolved into their own unique class of emerging contaminants. However, the full extent of nanomaterials’ impact on the environment is currently unknown. In this study, we use the Water Quality Analysis Simulation Program (WASP, version 8.32) to investigate the fate, transformation, and speciation of nano copper oxide (nanoCuO), a common component of antifouling boat-bottom paints, in a freshwater environment over the course of 101 years. WASP serves as a …

Optimum allocation of the limited water resources to the fast-growing demand requires new approaches. In this study, a new tool that considers a conjunctive use of surface-groundwater resources to assess both supply and demand-side perspectives is proposed. Using coupled Water Evaluation and Planning (WEAP) and three-dimensional groundwater flow (MODFLOW) models, a basis for an integrated water management Decision Support System (DSS) is configured for the Middle Awash sub-basin. The coupled models characterize water demands for domestic, industry, irrigation, and livestock and water supply from surface and groundwater sources. Using systematically structured near-future scenarios, the likely impacts of natural and anthropogenic …

Space Matters: Spatial Effects, Maup, And Spatial Statistics In The Analysis Of Environmental Change In The Oil Sands Region Of Alberta (Canada), Bahareh Fallah, Isabelle Couloigner, Alison Hanes, Mojgan Mirzaei
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The oil sands zone (OSZ) is a vast area (142,200 km2) of northern Canada, best known for oil and gas extraction, and characterized by a delicate natural and human environment, owing to its diverse flora and fauna, as well as its cultural diversity, indigenous population, and resource economy. A spatio-temporal study is conducted to detect environmental changes in OSZ, based on DEM input and Landsat composites every fifth year between 2000 and 2020. Once changes are identified, statistical models will be implemented to probabilistically assess the association of disturbances with specific process categories, i.e., natural vs. anthropogenic. Spatial data, including …

Air Pollution Control Methods And Environmental Impacts Of The Cement Manufacturing Industry : A Case Study, Sahar Sadat Hosseini, Maryam Zare Shahneh
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Cement manufacturers may now generate more significant volumes than in the past due to technological advancements and a rise in demand for cement in the construction industry. Higher production levels, on the other hand, have been widely attributed to being the primary source of pollution. The most notable contaminants in the air are Methane, Fume, Dust, Nitrogen oxide, Sulphur oxide, Carbon oxide, and Carbon dioxide, which are the byproducts of cement manufacturers and also harmful to human and plant health through respiration. Excavation activities, dumps, tips, conveyer belts, crushing mills, and kiln emissions are the primary sources of air pollution …

The Impact Of Climate Change On Droughts In Central Asia Assessed Using Regional Climate Models, Bert Van Schaeybroeck, Stijn Buytaert, Sara Top, Steven Caluwaerts
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Climate change is expected to aggravate the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as droughts but impacts are found to strongly vary per region. For different reasons the region of Central Asia has been sparsely studied in that respect. To enable well-informed decision making for adaptation and mitigation, however, regional authorities in Central Asia are interested in a comprehensive and scientifically-based assessment. This work will provide an assessment of the impact of climate change on droughts that affect the agriculture and forestry in Central Asia, based on recently produced climate projections of regional climate models. The aim is …
Reusable Components For An Agent-Based Model Of Irrigation Management, Kavin Narasimhan, Nigel Gilbert
Reusable Components For An Agent-Based Model Of Irrigation Management, Kavin Narasimhan, Nigel Gilbert
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
We have developed an agent-based model called ‘WATER user associations at the Interface of Nexus Governance’ (WATERING) to explore the functions, opportunities, and challenges of decentralised water management in Sub-Saharan Africa. WATERING models the interactions between water users, a Water User Association (WUA) and an irrigation system. A WUA can adopt different policies to allocate and supply water to users. Each type of user responds differently to the WUA’s policies depending on individual circumstances and objectives. Our model demonstrates the impact of decisions and actions taken by water users and the WUA on water availability, consumption, and the resulting economic …
Transitioning To Sustainable Post-Growth Futures: Exploring Complex Blue Economy Scenarios In The Island Of Barbados, Crystal Drakes, Vanessa Schweizer
Transitioning To Sustainable Post-Growth Futures: Exploring Complex Blue Economy Scenarios In The Island Of Barbados, Crystal Drakes, Vanessa Schweizer
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
There is a need for scientific study into post-growth futures that prioritize ecological and social sustainability. The concept of sustainability brings together complex socioecological systems that prove difficult for stakeholders to implement. In Barbados and many other Small Island Developing States, coastal and marine spaces are of ecological, economic, social, and cultural importance and yet face major environmental, climate and anthropological threats. Due to the negative impacts of the COVID19 pandemic, economic growth has been prioritized particularly by way of coastal and marine resource exploitation. If not counterbalanced with ecological viability and social well-being, this could lead to overexploitation and …

The Value Of Ai In Land-Use Change Models, Ahmed Mustafa, Andreas Rienow, Timon Mcphearson
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Land-use change (LUC) models are important tools that provide insight into urbanization dynamics and possible future patterns. Many domains employ LUC models to project the possible impact of changes in land use on, e.g., ecosystem services, weather-related extremes such as flooding and heat. The calibration process is the core theme of LUC models. This study compares the performance of two common machine-learning classifiers, random forest (RF), and support vector machines (SVM), to calibrate Cellular automata LUC models (CA). It focuses on the sensitivity analysis of the sample size and the number of input variables for each classifier. We applied the …

A Hybrid Approach To Weather Seasonality Study And Forecasting, Masooma Suleman, Peter Khaiter
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In the recent years, climate change produces a profound impact on the seasonality shifting. For example, even a slight variation in temperature may trigger an early spring start. This study presents a hybrid application of machine learning and deep learning to analyze the shifts in seasons across contiguous years and to accurately forecast weather variables. The daily meteorological features (minimum temperature, maximum temperature, wind speed, precipitation, snow cover, etc.) collected for the City of Toronto (Canada) area over a 20-year period spanning from 1st January 2001 till 31st December 2020 are used in the study. The temporal data has been …

Targeted Calibration Of One-Dimensional Process-Based Lake Models, Fabian Bärenbold, Thomas Lorimer, Damien Bouffard, Martin Schmid
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Process-based one-dimensional hydrodynamic models are standard tools in physical limnology due to being robust, computationally inexpensive and often sufficiently accurate to derive management decisions. These models are usually calibrated using objective functions that compare temperature differences between model and observations. Such an example is the root mean square (RMS) which is currently used to maintain up-to-date 1D models for 54 Swiss lakes. However, it is not clear (and rarely investigated) whether such a RMS-based calibration is optimally suited to the various subsequent uses of model outputs: primarily, quantifying vertical transport processes and water column stratification. To investigate this issue, we …
Optimal Management Of Irrigation Water Using Ant Colony Optimisation, Duc Cong Hiep Nguyen, Holger Maier, Graeme Dandy
Optimal Management Of Irrigation Water Using Ant Colony Optimisation, Duc Cong Hiep Nguyen, Holger Maier, Graeme Dandy
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Irrigation is vital for food production in many parts of the world, particularly in dry areas or in periods of water scarcity. However, with growing water demands due to population growth, economic development and climate change, there is likely to be a significant reduction in the amount of water available for irrigation. This challenges how to manage the available irrigation water in the most effective way. The feasible solutions of this problem are (i) the optimal allocation of land and water resources for irrigation management to maximise net return, subject to constraints on area and water allocation and (ii) the …

Sustainability management practices that align with the goals defined by the UN focus on protecting habitats and minimizing environmental footprint. It is only possible to adequately address these issues by conducting ecosystem service assessment to evaluate their current and predict future state. However, in the cases of remote areas with a limited direct access that are typical of many tropical forests, the very acquisition of required data is a challenge which could be dealt with by using data generated by NASA’s Earth Observation System (EOS). Accordingly, the present study is aimed to answer the following three questions: (1) can EOS …

By growing industrial cities, air pollution has become one of the most important issues in the world. Since air quality impacts on human health directly, creating automatic systems to determine air pollution is so important. Frequent episodes of unhealthy air pollution conditions have been reported for Tehran, the capital of Iran, mainly because of critically high levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5). This study aims to estimate fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentration using RGB images processing in Tehran, Iran. The proposed method uses hybrid models of deep convolutional neural networks and comprehensive histogram of pixels to extract deep and robust …

Including Varying Degrees Of Stakeholder Input In The Optimisation Of Integrated Water Management Planning And Design, Holger R. Maier, Michael Di Matteo, Graeme C. Dandy
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Sustainable integrated water management (IWM) requires collaborative planning and design approaches. The complex engineering systems involved can have a large number of options and multiple benefits and costs to multiple stakeholders. Understanding trade-offs between options with respect to these diverse benefits and costs can increase decision-maker buy-in to negotiated outcomes on IWM performance requirements and engineering solutions. Optimisation frameworks using evolutionary algorithms (such as genetic algorithms) can be tailored to the level of stakeholder interaction required to encourage buy-in into the modelling process and adopted solutions. This paper presents a series of three (3) IWM planning and design evolutionary optimisation …
Review Of Fecal Pathogens In Roof Animals To Model Health Risk Of Rainwater Harvesting, David Demaree
Review Of Fecal Pathogens In Roof Animals To Model Health Risk Of Rainwater Harvesting, David Demaree
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The practice of collecting precipitation from rooftops (roof runoff) is an environmentally friendly way to supplement water supplies. One of the barriers to implementation of roof runoff in the US is limited risk-based treatment guidance for the use of roof runoff. Guidance is limited due to sparse information, environmental factors, roof runoff infrastructure, as well as the variability of pathogen characteristics (infection rate, prevalence, intensity, and virulence). A method for the estimation of health risks associated with roof runoff, is to assume there is a direct relationship between the pathogens in roof runoff and the pathogens in the feces of …

The Design Of Constructed Salt Marshes Under Deep Uncertainty, John Kucharski, Jennifer Olszewski, Marriah Abellera, Todd Steissberg
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Using nature in engineering design is a long-standing goal of water resource managers. Landscape features like salt marshes serve critical ecological functions in coastal environments delivering important water quality, erosion control and flood inundation benefits. Despite their benefits, natural coastal features like salt marsh have been decimated by development and pollution, leaving much of our coastline unprotected. The diverse benefits of these nature-based features (NBF) make them attractive components of traditional water resource project designs. However, the reality of including these features in engineered designs is complicated by physical and biological uncertainties that limit their use. In this presentation, the …

Impact Of The Degree Of Incorporation Of Domain Knowledge Into The Automatic Calibration Of Land Use (Natural Hazard Exposure) Models, Charles P. Newland, Holger R. Maier, Aaron C. Zecchin, Jeffery P. Newman
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Natural hazard risk is generally quantified using a combination of hazard, exposure and vulnerability. Consequently, quantifying future risk requires integrated modelling of these three components over time in response to drivers of change, such as climate change and population growth. We have developed such an integrated model to better understand future natural hazard risk, UNHARMED, in which land use and building stock models simulate changes in exposure. Application of the model to different regions requires calibration of the land use model to the local conditions. Calibration is critical given the sensitivity of the model to changes in land use, however …

Model-Data Marriage Counselling: Resolving The Age-Old Conflict Between Models And Data (And Between Those Who Model And Those Who Measure), Felix Egger, Maria P. Vilas, Matthew P. Adams, Hayley Langsdorf
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Models and data (and those who generate them) have an important but sometimes uneasy relationship. Effective integration of information from models and data is the “holy grail” for decision-makers and those seeking to understand environmental systems. Data provide snapshots of what is happening in the system, which is essential for thorough model calibration, validation, and testing. In contrast, models can explore the underlying processes driving the observed behaviour. Thus, models and data provide complementary information about a system. In cases where model predictions do not agree with observations, resolving any discrepancies is essential for model-data integration and can be a …
