Models For Decisions, Svajunas Plunge
Models For Decisions, Svajunas Plunge
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
There is a huge gap between scientific applications of environmental models and applications needed for decision makers represented by or required from various governmental bodies. While the scientific community might look for the unexplored horizons on project to project basis, governmental bodies certainly need tools to provide consistent answers to managerial questions raised by different policies. However, with today's increasing environmental changes and multiple new questions asked, decision makers are often pushed to look at the same new horizons as the scientific community. This means that there is a great need for sophisticated scientific tools for governmental bodies too. Such …

Emerging From The Covid-19 Pandemic: Insights For, Adham Badawy, Andrew Reid Bell
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The COVID-19 pandemic has taken the world by storm, disrupting supply chains and affecting livelihoods all over the globe. The pandemic has thus pushed for many researchers to dig deeper into understanding the exposure patterns of the outbreak and also to develop numerical models and tools for doing so. While the wealth of models produced has been helpful in understanding the different dimensions of the pandemic and to test out different policy actions that can prevent its spread, they can also be useful in the environmental modelling domain. This research work aims to capture the learnings and insights from these …
Spatio-Temporal Variability Of Dry And Wet Spells And Their Influence On Crop Yields, Hans Van De Vyver, Anne Gobin
Spatio-Temporal Variability Of Dry And Wet Spells And Their Influence On Crop Yields, Hans Van De Vyver, Anne Gobin
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
We analyse the relationship between variations in crop yields across Belgium and dry (wet) spell metrics during the crop growing season. More specifically, we consider the number of consecutive dry (wet) days, and the total amount of rainfall during consecutive wet days. Dry (wet) days were defined as days with less (more) than 0.2 mm. A two-way ANOVA is employed to indicate statistically significant relationships between dry/wet spell metrics and regional crop yields. We make an extreme value analysis of the dry and wet spell metrics and estimate 20-year return levels, relevant to agricultural insurances and risk management strategies. We …
Linking Models With Actions: The Need For Transparency In The Public Modeling Process, Kenneth M. Bryden, Scott Ferguson
Linking Models With Actions: The Need For Transparency In The Public Modeling Process, Kenneth M. Bryden, Scott Ferguson
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
We are confronted by a number of environmental challenges (perhaps crises) that require societal action. These include climate change, plastics in the environment, and environmental justice as well as many others. All of these require building a shared vision of the future and our actions. However, building a societal vision is a messy process requiring some form of shared narrative between various stakeholders who have different and often conflicting interests with limited, incomplete, and uncertain information. These interests are defined by each stakeholder’s current narrative, constructed by people asking themselves ‘what is going on here?,’ and answered by drawing on …

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has a major responsibility for the regulation of the Nation’s streams, rivers, and waterways. This often requires developing water quality models to resolve issues and concerns with regard to the environment and ecosystems. USACE Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) is currently developing an Engineering with Nature Design Tool supported by years of research and development in the Gridded Surface Subsurface Hydrologic Analysis (GSSHA) model and a suite of Water Quality and Ecosystem Models (Clearwater Water Quality Modules). GSSHA is a physics-based, distributed, hydrologic, sediment and constituent fate and transport model. Features include …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The ability to move is an integral part of life, enabling the search for food or the escape from potential dangers. These behaviors are always embedded in socio-ecological systems which provide a context and a variety of stimuli. Agent-based models (ABMs) help to understand the socio-ecological systems by computationally describing the movement and interactions of entities on the basis of theory and analyzing the resulting macro-scale dynamics. Despite ABMs being based on theory, calibration is necessary because (i) for most systems the theory is incomplete, (ii) not all attributes of the entities can be measured, (iii) attributes naturally vary, and …

The well-known World Food Studies simulation model (WOFOST) is a process model for the quantitative analysis of the growth and production of annual field crops. Over time this model has been implemented by quite a few organizations, using a diverse range of programming languages such as R (Rwofost), Python (The Python Crop Simulation Environment (PCSE)), C# and the original version in Fortran. Most frequently the model is being deployed on single computers or laptops, which poses limits to the number of simulations that can be performed within a reasonable timeframe. A recent development is the Java implementation of WOFOST, based …

In a world of increasing population, changing climate, and decreasing availability of arable land, there is an urgent need to preserve and improve the quality of our agricultural ecosystems. Agriculture in Australia has always been vulnerable to extreme weather patterns and other environmental hazards. As such, risk and resilience are crucial factors in managing its social-ecological farming systems. With mounting pressures of climate variability, threats to sustainable food production increase in frequency and intensity, constituting significant risks to farmers, consumers, and the financial and policy institutions supporting these systems. Such risks are a strong incentive for the joint development of …

Uncertainty And Sensitivity Of Global Ecosystem Service Values, Lisa Watson, Judith A. Verstegen
Uncertainty And Sensitivity Of Global Ecosystem Service Values, Lisa Watson, Judith A. Verstegen
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Ecosystem service assessments facilitate the valuation of nature and support decision-making for assessing change or the potential of change in the environment. To ensure robust decisions, analyses of uncertainty of ecosystem service values and the sensitivity of these values to the assessment inputs and parameters should be included. Currently, this is not common practice. Our global, land-based study assesses the uncertainty of the food service and the livestock subservice resulting from uncertainty estimates in six inputs: buffalo, cattle, goat, pig, poultry, and sheep. Uncertainty is estimated for the values and spatial distribution of the input data. Furthermore, it assesses the …

Assessing Holistic Sustainability Of Riparian Buffer Designs Usingdata Envelopment Analysis, Not Listed
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Riparian buffer zones (RBZs) represent best management practices (BMPs) that can provide multiple benefits to watershed ecosystems. However, the holistic sustainability assessment of individual RBZ designs is at infancy. We discuss RBZ sustainability indicators that include five river water quality parameters as environmental indicators, namely, dissolved oxygen (DO), total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), total suspended solids as sediment (TS), and biochemical oxygen demand (BD), and an economic indicator of net present value (NPV) costs. We then present an approach for integrating the sustainability indicators of 120 RBZ decision management objectives (DMOs) that are derived from the combination of RBZ …

Experiences From Using Behavioural Economic Methods To Parameterize An Abm Simulating The Adoption Of Sustainable Farming Practices, Robert Huber, Cordelia Kreft, Karin Späti, Robert Finger
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Modelling farmers behaviour patterns can contribute to the assessment of policy, technology, or environmental changes in agriculture. In this context, agent-based models have become an important simulation tool in agricultural systems analysis. However, the availability of empirical data e.g., on farmer preferences and goal functions, represents a challenge when implementing a detailed representation of farmers’ individual decision-making in agent-based models. We here present and discuss an approach how to parameterize an agent-based model with census data, surveys, network analysis and choice experiments using the modelling framework FARMIND. This agent-based modelling framework provides a link between behavioural factors such as risk …
Experiences And Challenges In Developing A Decentralized, Michael Berg-Mohnicke
Experiences And Challenges In Developing A Decentralized, Michael Berg-Mohnicke
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
For many years the amount of available data as well as computing power is increasing if not even accelerating. Naturally there is a high desire to use these powers and possibilities also in our environmental research field. Unfortunately at the same time the diversity in hardware (mobile/desktop/cloud/HPC) and software (languages/frameworks) is growing as well let alone because of the increasing amount of legacy to deal with. One common way to manage these challenges is to centralize storage and computational power and via central authority impose restrictions on useable hardware and software. Another possibility could be to leverage the ubiquitous connectedness …
Characterizing Modeling Contexts To Support Adequate And Valid Model Choice, Christian Troost, Thomas Berger
Characterizing Modeling Contexts To Support Adequate And Valid Model Choice, Christian Troost, Thomas Berger
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
There is widespread consensus across disciplines that model validity can only be judged with respect to a specific purpose (Oreskes et al., 1994; Barlas, 1996; Jakeman et al., 2006; Augusiak et al., 2014). While e.g. Edmonds et al. (2019) classify modeling purposes into discrete classes (description, explanation, prediction, theoretical exposition, illustration, analogy, and social learning), we discuss that the choice of valid models and methods in addition requires considering structural knowledge about the system, (potential) data availability, computational resources, degree of generalization and identifiability, as well as precision, accuracy and robustness required to answer the research question. Together, this can …

D-Cascade: A Basin-Scale Sediment (Dis)Connectivity Model To Quantify Sediment Budgets And Explore Reservoir Sediment Management Strategies, Marco Tangi, Simone Bizzi, Rafael Schmitt, Andrea Castelletti
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Dam development projects alter natural river sediment connectivity, resulting in cumulative negative externalities across different spatio-temporal scales. Designing optimal reservoir management strategies that account for economic objectives and sediment connectivity is rarely done due to the lack of specifically designed modelling tools to properly quantify the hydro-morphological response of river systems. Models designed for this purpose must retain both a basin-scale perspective (to capture cumulative impacts of multiple dams) and a dynamic time representation (to capture dynamic reservoir operations). This work presents the D-CASCADE model, a process-based basin-scale dynamic sediment transport model, which in this new version includes specific add-ons …

Gamified Process Of Conceptual Model Development With Stakeholders, Elena Bakhanova, Jaime Garcia, William Raffe, Alexey Voinov
Gamified Process Of Conceptual Model Development With Stakeholders, Elena Bakhanova, Jaime Garcia, William Raffe, Alexey Voinov
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Despite the positive influence of gamification on increasing engagement and motivation, there are a limited number of cases when the participatory modeling (PM) process has been gamified. In this research we focused on gamifying the stage of Conceptual Model Development because there are almost no examples when it has been gamified in any way. At the same time, this stage is very important for the overall PM process because it is associated with the first workshops where the stakeholders might experience difficulties in learning the modeling language and interacting in a group with diverse views. Hence, there is a need …

Recalibrating An Agent-Based Model Of Global Food And Nutrition Trade, Nick Roxburgh, Gary Polhill, Jiaqi Ge
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Global food and nutrition security has long been an issue of international concern, with ‘zero hunger’ prominent as one of the United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Development Goals and the importance of safeguarding food security acknowledged in the Paris Agreement. In previously published work (Ge et al. 2021), the calibration and validation of an agent-based model of global food and nutrition trade was demonstrated. The model focused on the role of relational factors in shaping countries’ trade behaviour, with each country represented as a discrete agent. It was designed to allow a wide variety of scenarios to be simulated, including the …

Modelling Trichodesmium Dynamics And Its Contribution To The Great Barrier Reef Nitrogen Budget, Chinenye J. Ani, Stephen Lewis, Scott Smithers, Mark Baird
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Trichodesmium is a nitrogen-fixing marine cyanobacterium, proposed to be an important source of “new” nitrogen (i.e., nitrogen that is not generated from remineralised organic matter) in the Great Barrier Reef. We estimated the contribution of nitrogen fixation by Trichodesmium to the Great Barrier Reef’s annual nitrogen budget using the CSIRO Environmental Modelling Suite (EMS), a coupled hydrodynamic, biogeochemical and sediment modelling system. EMS outputs were improved by optimally parameterising the temperature dependence of Trichodesmium physiological rates to capture influence of ongoing temperature increases associated with climate change. The model estimated that Trichodesmium contributed 0.49 MT to the nitrogen budget between …
Serious Games To Support Participatory Modeling In Integrated Water Resource Management, John Kucharski, Jennifer Olszewski
Serious Games To Support Participatory Modeling In Integrated Water Resource Management, John Kucharski, Jennifer Olszewski
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
To build consensus around inherent multi-objective trade-offs integrated water resource management (IWRM) decisions usually requires structured collaboration across multiple stakeholder groups and decision-making authorities. For this reason, participatory modeling (PM) is often at the core of IWRM decision-making processes. However, the diversity and complexity of physical, social, and environmental dynamics in water resources systems is a substantial barrier to PM in these contexts, because it makes developing a shared understanding of the system difficult. This presentation will recount the iterative development of a serious game designed to help IWRM teams achieve the cognitive, social, and practical milestones necessary to achieve …
Game Complexity And Stylization In Rural Resource Contexts – Pastoral, Human-Wildlife Conflict, And Ecosystem Service Examples, Andrew Bell
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
A critical frontier in the use of games for both experiential learning and research is the tension across task complexity, the attention of the participant, and the degree of stylization necessary to make complex issues tractable within the short duration of an intervention. I present several different game designs varying in task complexity and in platform (NetLogo and Google Sheets), and which have been applied in varying rural resource decision contexts (pastoralism, human-wildlife conflict, ecosystem services) and with different goals – to measure and parameterize behavior, to identify policy priorities, as well as to influence beliefs and preferences. In this …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The Automated Coastal Engineering System (ACES) is an interactive, computer-based design and analysis system for coastal engineering applications. Even though it was designed in the 1990s and is built on legacy software, making it cumbersome to use by today’s standards (e.g, DOS-based with keystroke inputs), ACES continues to be actively applied in the coastal engineering community for planning and finding simple estimates. Using Python, and modern open-source libraries like Param and Panel, we developed the USACE Coastal Engineering Toolkit (UCET), an intuitive, web-based interface that will enable the broader coastal engineering community, academia, non-governmental organizations, and the general public access …

A Cross-Sectoral Look At The Use Of A Frame Game To Set Strategic Agendas For Urban Resilience, Carissa Champlin
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The ability to integrate knowledge that is distributed across a broad range of research disciplines and professions is crucial to responding effectively to the grand challenges pressing our societies. Urban resilience being one of these challenges requires coordinated responses to the shocks and stresses that threaten our highly interconnected social, technical and environmental systems in cities and regions. Using the Weblinx strategy-making frame game, a group of resilience engineering assistant professors and other academics prioritized key topics of urban resilience originating from their various domains of expertise. The adaptable frame game methodology also proved to be effective in an online …

Modelling To Scale Mitigations Of Leaching And N2o From Patch To Paddock, Val Snow, Esther Meenken, Rogerio Cichota, Dean Holzworth
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Leaching and nitrous oxide emissions from grazed pastures are driven by highly concentrated urine patches deposited onto a small fraction of the grazed area. Previous work, at the scale of a urine patch, has shown that adding diuretic components to the diet of ruminants will reduce the N load in urine patches and reduce emissions of N from the patch. However, diuretics also increase the number and size of urine patches. Conceptually we know that there are both reinforcing and antagonistic forces operating so it is uncertain how effective diuretics will be at the paddock scale. Here, we sought to …

Clearwater-Riverine: An Integrated Water Quality Modeling Framework For Riparian And Floodplain Ecosystems, Todd E. Steissberg, Billy E. Johnson, Zhonglong Zhang, Mark Jensen
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Watersheds comprise a complex web of interactions as water, heat, nutrients, and contaminants flow in varying frequency and quantities through riverine ecosystems. Integrated process-based riverine water quality models that incorporate these processes and interactions in river channels, riparian buffers, and floodplain ecosystems are needed to predict changes to watersheds due to stressors such as land use and climate change, as well as changes associated with beneficial actions, such as ecosystem restoration. ClearWater-Riverine, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Engineer Research and Development Center’s (USACE-ERDC) new state-of-the-art riverine water quality modeling system, simulates water temperature and water quality in branching river …

The Quantification And Valuation Of Food Provision In The H2020 Landsupport Project, Angelo Basile, Marialaura Bancheri, Alessia Perego, Marco Botta
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Many tools are nowadays available for ecosystem services evaluation, including those referring to provisioning services (Grêt-Regamey et al., 2017). In the case of the geospatial approach developed in the H2020 LandSupport (LS) project, we decided to use the concept of equivalent wheat to compare potential provisioning services in the geospatial domain. In fact, the estimation of the ecosystem service provided by soils could be highly variable in function of the change in crops and then the specific land use and management. In addition, the choice of using equivalent wheat to analyze different areas allows to express the ecosystem service in …

As marine resources play an important role in different aspects of our life such as economy, food, and in balancing ecosystems, using them in a sustainable way is a must. Recently Machine Learning (ML) methods have been used in many domains, one of the most popular classes of ML algorithms being deep learning. There is a potential to apply these methods also on highly complex and rich fishery data. In this work, we aim to exploit deep learning models to help sustainable use of fish resources and avoid overfishing. The work is done in collaboration with the Norwegian Directorate of …
Integrating Precipitation Nowcasting In Data-Driven Prediction Of Extreme Hydrological Events, Marina Erechtchoukova, Rim Mhedhbi
Integrating Precipitation Nowcasting In Data-Driven Prediction Of Extreme Hydrological Events, Marina Erechtchoukova, Rim Mhedhbi
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Flash floods are among the most prompt and destructive natural phenomena. To issue warnings on time, various attempts were made to extend the forecast horizon of flash floods prediction models. Particularly, introducing rainfall forecast into process-based hydrological models was found effective. However, integrating precipitation predictions into data-driven models has not been fully addressed yet. In this paper, we assess the effectiveness of introducing future rainfall measurements into a data-driven model while taking forecast uncertainties into account. Computational experiments showed that introducing future rainfall observation (as perfect prediction) significantly improved the predictive performance of the flash flood model for extended lead …
Customizable Process Design For Collaborative Geographic Analysis, Zaiyang Ma, Min Chen, Zhong Zheng, Songshan Yue
Customizable Process Design For Collaborative Geographic Analysis, Zaiyang Ma, Min Chen, Zhong Zheng, Songshan Yue
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Geographic analysis can lead to better outcomes in a collaborative manner but requires complicated interactions among participants, support resources and analytic tools. A structural and explicit process that consists of a series of activities can help coordinate these interactions and improve collaboration. To address different geographic problems, the processes are supposed to be customized according to specific geographic analysis methods. However, the common scientific workflow-based process customization method seems inappropriate to provide a multiuser-engaged and interaction-intensive process. The process customization of collaborative geographic analysis still needs to consider the (1) progressive clarification of the process, (2) control of participant flows, …

A Global Sensitivity Analysis Of The Armosa Model, Annachiara Colombi, Marco Acutis, Marialaura Bancheri, Angelo Basile
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
ARMOSA is a process-based model that has been developed to quantify the effects of crop management practices on soil nitrogen and carbon cycles, groundwater nitrate pollution, and therefore also on soil carbon sequestration. The model reproduces crop growth and development by including soil water dynamics, carbon and nitrogen cycling and evapotranspiration. To identify the most important factors that affect the variability of the annual yield and of the average annual nitrogen leaching at 1 meter soil depth, a global sensitivity analysis of the model is carried out. The analysis is performed on four soil profiles belonging to the region of …
